Android :: Relative Speeds Of Telephony Managers Types?
Nov 2, 2010
There are a number of network types defined in TelephonyManager:
NETWORK_TYPE_GPRS
NETWORK_TYPE_EDGE
NETWORK_TYPE_UMTS
NETWORK_TYPE_CDMA
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_0
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_A
NETWORK_TYPE_1xRTT
NETWORK_TYPE_HSDPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSUPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSPA
Is there any info out there that describes what range of speeds you can expect on each of these? If that isn't available, it would be nice to be able to order them based on speed.

I've noticed that lately, my download speeds on my rooted Droid (running BB 0.5 most recently, though this "problem" occurred with BB 0.4 and LFY 1.6 as well) have not been stellar, though my upload speeds seem fine:
Could this be caused by the baseband? Im running C_01.43.01P. Prior to that, I was running (I think) 3E, which came with the phone, and worked fine with BB 0.4 but when the updated one came out I updated it since, hey, it's newer right? Anyway, (1) is this certainly the problem? and (2) if I choose to, how can I safely roll back to the 3E baseband?

Ever since I downloaded the new update (DI18) this morning, I cannot get good download speeds, but my upload speeds have greatly increased. Any ideas? Here is some proof If someone could give me a clue of what the problem could be, that would be great.

Does anyone have a statement released from Google or someone within Google telling the consumers to avoid Task Managers on Android devices.I went into VZW, trying to get an additional battery (usually if u complain they send u an additional battery) because I'm getting 5-7 hours out of my battery even when I'm careful and try to stretch my battery. So the women asked questions, do u use Wifi...NEVER, don't even turn it on. Brightness? It's 1/8th of the way on to full brightness, Task manager? No Google said not to use one..So she wouldn't send me a battery because she said that its because I don't use a task manager.I was telling her Google had advised us not to and she said, that's false that Google has approved them to put task managers on people's phones who are having battery problems.(I don't believe that)I looked around Google and could only find it from joe-shomes but couldn't find a statement from Google. Can anyone provide a statement from Google that advises us not to use task managers?

I have researched extensively and am pretty sure this is not possible. I want to make a call and then inject DTMF when the far end answers. So 2 questions Is it possible ?
If not, how do I work to get it on the list of upcoming features to be provided on Android. I can say that this is possible on BlackBerry and Symbian, so Android is falling behind in this regard.

I am using the Telephony class to get messages ( Telephony.Sms.Intents.getMessageFromIntent(Intent intent)). But I can't find the class Telephony from its package(android.provider), there is an error named "The import android.provider.Telephony cannot be resolved" when import android.provider.Telephony.Sms.Intents, the sdk version I'm using is android-sdk-windows-1.0_r2, how can I use this with the new implementation of Telephony?

I have low expectations that this message will get any response as it seems that Google developers do not like to address issues too close to the Android core and to strategic mobility applications. However, as they say, hope is the last to die.
I am really puzzled by the lack of response to queries about issues with some TelephonyManager functions.
Specifically, there have been a number of requests in the past, including mine, about
getNeighboringCellInfo()
As per the link below, getNeighboringCellInfo() is a documented TelephonyManager function available to application developers.
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/TelephonyMan...()
Yet, getNeighboringCellInfo() does not work. Any attempt to call it in an application results in application failure.
What is the problem here? If Google does not want application developers to use this function (I cannot fathom why that would be the case), then please remove it from TelephonyManager, and save all of us time and frustration.
It's really puzzling that for such an open platform Android has so many secrets and rules.

I would like to know what are the main differences between TelephonyManager and PhoneStateListener, because you can do (more or less) the same things with both. For example, you could create an incoming calls register implementing a broadcastreceiver and using TelephonyManger API or extending PhoneStateListener class and registering this new listener throughTelephonyManager . Case 1 - BroadcastReceiver (TelephonyManager)

I currently run TasKiller because I find my phone gets SOOO SLOW. I back all the way out of apps but I still have trouble.
Is this still an issue for those with some form of 2.1 or am I doing something wrong? Is there maybe a better way of managing my system resources without killing apps?

I was watching a video on "best apps of 2014" on YouTube, and a startup manager was one of them.
I downloaded it and tried it out with Skype, rebooted, Skype wasn't under the running apps, barely anything was actually. i thought it worked with the skype, until i rebooted the phone again with nothing selected to not start at startup, and all the same - few - visible processes were running. disable some of the rarely used but always running background processes. for example, a game that i use and enjoy, but not every day and would like it to run upon my request. thats what i thought startup manager would do.

Is there a way to look up the user phone number other than TelephonyManager? In my G1, this returns null: // get your phone number TelephonyManager telephonyManager = (TelephonyManager) getSystem Service (Context. TELEPHONY_SERVICE); String tel = telephonyManager.getLine1Number(); Log.i("Telephone Number ==> ", tel+" <=="); Is there any other way of getting user's own phone number? take care, Muthu Ramadoss. http://linkedin.com /in/tellibitz http://androidrocks.googlecode.com - Android Consulting. TelephonyManager.getNetworkType() returns one of the constant values.It appears that the constant values have an integer order, by possible bearer link speed.I know using constant values used in the following manner is generally bad,however could one use this to determine a basic cutoff for application functionality and have it work between API levels? (in API-v1 there was nothing above 0x03)if( telephonyManager.getNetworkType() > TelephonyManager.NETWORK_TYPE_EDGE ) return "3G! party on!";else if( telephonyManager.getNetworkType() > TelephonyManager.NETWORK_TYPE_UNKNOWN )}

Since I've bought the hero I have not installed a task manager and I would see it getting a little more laggy or choppy. So I decided to install task killer, my phone is back to being the way it was when I first got it. I know the rumors and all but I do think task manager is the way to go from 90mp free to 180mb.

Are they needed to help the phone kill tasks that it is running in the memory? I read it makes the phone faster a little but are they needed? I know android does a great job of canceling out programs and managing it's own tasks. But are these necessary to give the system an extra boost in management and speed?

There's a thread similar to this on one of the Hero forums. I tried to stop using the task managers on the hero, but I noticed a quite a bit of lag once stuff kept building up. On the Moment, I was running into several issues with apps, and I figured it was due to the task manager (i use advance task manager). So to test my theory I stopped using the task manager and the device works as it should. What i found was that even with a lot of usage, this device does not slow down. Not sure if it's the lack of the sense ui (i'm using open home), the fast processor, both or what but this phone can handle everything I'm throwing at it.My advice, stop using whatever task killer you're using. One less thing to worry about makes for a better phone experience.

Verizon Wireless to store managers: Wednesday is a big day Boy Genius Report..Reason to be excited again. What if it's a possible announcement on 2.1 for either the Droid or the Eris or both? Nothing's official yet, at least about what the conference concerns, but two different sources have said this so it looks like it's true. If it is about the iPhone hitting Verizon, they may still weasel in some small tidbits about other stuff, Android included.

I'm reworking some of my layouts to use Relative layout. I have some building blocks which I'd like to reuse. The problem I seems to have with the include of the layout and position other layouts out of this include. Example:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height=wrap_content"

I need to implement a screen containing a list of blocks one below the other. Each block will contain mutiple superimpose elements (Images, text) for which the relative position needs to be specified with respect to the top left corner of the block.
For creating the list of blocks i have used listview. For each block i tried to use relative layout. This works ok when the phone is in landscape mode and absolute position is specified relative to left edge of the phone. But when the phone is put in the portrait mode the layout gets distorted.
1) What layout can be used for this scenario?
2) Can relative positions be specified in terms of percentage of screen width/height instead of pixels?

I'm attempting to add four controls to a layout; <label> <text> <seek> <radio> I want the seek widget to occupy all the available screen space between the edittext control and the radio control. However if I give it the value android:layout_width="wrap_content" only a small seek control is displayed and if I set the value to fill_parent it overwrites the radio control. I would have thought there would be a mechanism to occupy the free space between the text and radio controls dynamically.
