HTC EVO 4G :: Loss Of Voice - 3G Network
Sep 6, 2010
My phone has been working fine since June. Saturday morning I had no bars and the 3G icon was missing. I could not make a call nor access data. I re-started the phone and was able to make one call but then no bars. If I drive 1/2 north of my house everything is fine. Same with south. If I leave a two square mile radius from my house phone works just like it did before. I called Sprint to see if there was a problem with a tower or their network. Support only instructed me to do a factory reset. If that doesn't work I could take the phone to a service center. I drove to the local Sprint store - the phone worked fine. I am only having this problem - now -only at home. Issues with data at home is one thing but not being able to get voice calls is another. Will a factory reset work? Could something be blocking the signal? Other than getting a new phone how can I get Sprint to understand this problem?

I'm trying to write an application that needs to know when there is no IP network connection available. I am using the android.net.conn.CONNECTIVITY_CHANGE broadcast event along with ConnectivityManager to react to the changes in state to achieve this, but I'm having problems testing my set up in the emulator.I have tried both flight mode and pressing F8 to disable the "Cellular Network" but even with both of these engaged the application still "sees" the underlying network.Has anybody managed to find a way to simulate a total lack of network access?

Last night my phone decided it wanted to be annoying and started turning itself on and off on its own. This has caused me to lose my network signal.
So far, I have turned the phone off (had it powered down all night while I slept).
Removed the sim card.
Used the recovery options to clear the cache.
Simulated a battery pull.
Thus far, nothing has worked.

Ever since the 2.1 OTA update that I received back in July, my phone has been burning through the battery quickly and places that I usually get a 3G signal I now get no signal and the big X in the signal bar.

Is anyone else having issues using the GV app on their Droid? I haven't been able to send or receive any SMS messages through the GV app all morning. Actually, it's been giving me troubles the last couple of days. I'm able to send and receive SMS messages from voice.google.com, and because I'm forwarding SMS messages to my Gmail, I'm still getting notifications, but the GV app itself is still acting funky. I try to refresh, but all I get is "Network Error". I've also tried logging out and logging back in, as well as a re-boot on the Droid itself, all to no avail. Am I the only one having issues or are any of you peoples noticing some funkiness as well? EDIT: Of course, 2 min. after I posted this, I got some new GV notifications and was able to send an SMS.

I've been here and XDA for quite a while but I recently started getting an increase of battery loss. Yes I know all about the not charging anymore once reaching 100% but that isn't the problem. I flashed Myns 2.2 R3 a while ago along with Kings #11 CFS. I was so happy when I realized it would take ~30 hours with occasional use and BeeJive running to hit 15% and warn me about low battery. It was only giving me ~23 hour with the same settings on Fresh 3.4.0.1. A few days ago, it started dropping rapidly and I'm not sure what caused but I was able to narrow it down to a few things. I remembered on that day, I dropped it once. I prayed to god it was okay. Picked it up and everything was working fine. I go and install a few updates and forget about it. Didn't notice the battery drop until the next day. I was only getting ~17 hours with everything kept the same way. Is there a log that I can access of everything I changed? I used Google nav for about 8 hours non-stop and while it was charging 2 nights ago, the battery never increased. That has never happened before, it would always charge more than it would drain. I didn't want to wipe and flash everything back since it's going to be a long week. Had a family gathering yesterday and gave my little cousins the phone to play with since it had so many games. There's another dinner tonight and wiping it would be out of the option now and until next week. Even then I think I'll be hesitant to do so since I don't even know if the problem lies within the apps.

This morning I took my evo off the charger after charging the whole night. For some background info I have all my accounts to sync manually and I did the gsm data trick and I am not running a live wallpaper. So I start my phone and turn on my wifi( I have everything else off) I then go watch about 10 mins of youtube videos and check my email. So I started at 100% and at the end of the videos and checking my email I was at 75%! What is going on here? I have done everything I can to ensure proper battery life but this seems outrageous?

I started a thread a while ago about poor wifi performance on my phone (weak signal right next to my laptop that has good signal). Long story short, I discovered that if I'm holding the phone in my palm with fingers wrapped around the sides in usual fashion... my wifi -and cellular signal significantly weaken. Surprisingly, there was no response to this. I began to think maybe this is standard behavior for a smart phone. I mean, when I'm in my office which is the basement, I literally set the phone down or hold it with just two fingers pinching the sides in order to download something on wifi. This 'bulletin' just popped up on Boy Genius Report complaining of this exact same thing happening on the iPhone 4. What gives? Does this happen to other EVOs? Seems to happen on both mine and my wife's so I figured maybe it's just something I have to deal with. But if I have faulty hardware, I'd like to get it taken care of. Here's the link to the iphone article. Holding the iPhone 4 affects the antenna, degrades cellular signal?

I have been looking at the ConnectivityManager class documented at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/ConnectivityManage... .
I would like to know if an Android application can open a network connection (socket) on a specified network interface [on a device supporting multiple network interface types WiFi, Cellular, WiMax etc] ? I am looking for the capability for an application to open a socket on a given type of network for example over WiFi network or over 3G Cellular Data network.
If this is possible in Android, how would I code this requirement within the API Framework ? The ConnectivityManager enables an application to learn about available network connections and currently categorises them as either TYPE_WIFI or TYPE_MOBILE.
There is a member function in the ConnectivityManager class called requestRouteToHost(int, int) [url] which "Ensure that a network route exists to deliver traffic to the specified host via the specified network interface. An attempt to add a route that already exists is ignored, but treated as successful." Sounds like this would install an IP routing table entry to reach a given host via a specified network interface type (WiFi or Mobile). After calling this would it be sufficient for an application to open a socket and connect to the desired destination address ?
Or perhaps the application needs to bind() a socket to a local address of a network interface of the desired type (WiFi or Mobile) Or by setting a socket-level socket option of SO_DONTROUTE ?

when I opened Handcent SMS on my phone, it came up with a white screen that I had assumed was just a bug, but after sending a text message,I realized that all of my previous messages had been lost or deleted for some reason. Absolutely nothing happened between last night and this morning that would have led me to expect such a result, and as you can imagine I'm pretty upset about the data loss. If you have any suggestions for steps to take, I would sincerely appreciate them. My phone is not rooted or anything of the sort if that changes anything. Also, I've been using SMS backup to back up to my gmail, but there are some longer texts that Handcent converts to MMS that were not backed up.

Lately I have noticed that when I go to use the web browser on my droid the browser hangs and I get a page cannot be viewed message. I always assumed it was the browser as the vpn to work is still connected. I recently downloaded weather bug and have noticed that when I can't view a web page I also loose all weather access. (vpn still shows connected) If I shut down my phone and restart it things work great.

I know about the ROM memory leak when you shut off the phone while BT is trying to connect, but I havent seen anyone talking about loss of RAM. you get it back after the phone is rebooted, but I noticed with taskpanel x and now with auto task killer. (I did a factory reset and attempted to use the phone w/o a task manager/killer and it was unbearable) I start the phone and had about 97 in the beginning with taskpanel x, everytime it would "kill all" the available memory would be lower, eventually in the 50's with everything killed and Id restart the phone and then Id be back in the 90's. now with auto task killer Im looking at 54.4 available when I wake the phone up, just restarted it and I have 76. does anyone else have this problem? I was hoping the 2.0 release would also come with a fix for this, but with noone talking about it, Im assuming its not being worked on, maybe its just my phone...

So I had Pete's virgin 2.2 release on my phone, ran fine, full root access.
Sapphire 7.0 was released, so what the heck, I formatted system/cache, and installed.
But...lost root somehow. No SU app, no access.
Applied su.zip in Recovery to regain access. Didn't work...
Applied it a few more times, rebooted...nada.
Wiped system/cache and installed CM6 Alpha 3...no root. Applied su.zip, still no su app, no root.
Nandroided back to my backup of Pete's virgin 2.2 release. Root.
Wiped system/cache, installed CM6 Alpha 3, no root.
W-T-F?
Never seen this before...always wipe system/cache before a new ROM, never lost root before.
Really appreciate any suggestions...I have access to CW recovery.
Don't understand how flashing a rooted ROM could leave me w/out root access, or why installing an su zip doesn't add SU back in.

I un-synced my facebook account on my Desire because I wanted to replace the old 'Favourites' photo's from old profile pics to new ones that some of my friends have changed. When I re-synced it, this was successful, but all my existing Contacts went haywire and my existing Sim contacts became invisible.

I did a factory reset 2 weeks ago, because when I uninstalled launcher pro, my dx went black. reboots did not help. Since that factory reset, everything has appeared to be fine though. I just read the big read stickied warning, and figured I better ask about the potential issue.

1. I connect my phone to my PC and copy mp3 files to the phone's sd card. But then immediately when it's done it's all gone again! The files just don't stay there.
2. Taking photos, lots of them age getting corrupted.
Could this be a quality issue with the SD card?? Admittedly i got 32gb for only $50. Could it be as simple as that ?

I've had unaccountable SD card memory loss since the update. Is it the upgrade or one of the apps I've downloaded since then. It seems to happen when I use picsaypro and an online animator even if I don't save anything.

Anyone else experienced a major drop in 3G signal as well as their cell signal in the past few days? I think it started monday on my phone and now its mostly running in 1X mode and dropping more calls than I have in the past two years. Not sure if its something with verizon, or maybe and app I updated. (My wifes phone is doing the same, but she also happened to update about a dozen apps on monday)

Just wondered how many of you use apps to protect against theft or loss of android.
1.Apps to prevent theft - apps that make a sound when moved like 'Antitheft Alarm','Alarm Antitheft Alarm Screen Lock'.etc
2.Apps that prevent loss or misplacement - apps that locate a phone through GPS like 'WAY GPS Tracking','Lookout' , 'Comodo','PreyProject','Where's my Droid, etc
3.apps to locate phone if stolen by locking the phone, locating it,taking cam pictures - similar as No 2 apps like 'Where's my Droid','Locate lost Phone' and apps like 'Prey Project','Lookout's Lockcam feature','Thief face trap mini',etc
