Sprint HTC Hero :: Memory Loss - Ram Not Rom
Nov 9, 2009
I know about the ROM memory leak when you shut off the phone while BT is trying to connect, but I havent seen anyone talking about loss of RAM. you get it back after the phone is rebooted, but I noticed with taskpanel x and now with auto task killer. (I did a factory reset and attempted to use the phone w/o a task manager/killer and it was unbearable) I start the phone and had about 97 in the beginning with taskpanel x, everytime it would "kill all" the available memory would be lower, eventually in the 50's with everything killed and Id restart the phone and then Id be back in the 90's. now with auto task killer Im looking at 54.4 available when I wake the phone up, just restarted it and I have 76. does anyone else have this problem? I was hoping the 2.0 release would also come with a fix for this, but with noone talking about it, Im assuming its not being worked on, maybe its just my phone...

I have noticed that I only have around 25 to 30mbs of available space on my internal phone memory. This ROM has a2sd how is this possible? Some of my application will not update now like handcent. Doesn't the phone run into problems when the memory gets that low?

My wife's Hero is stock and she said she just lost the audio on the phone. I know there are issues with this on rooted ROM'd phones but hers is stock.

I've had unaccountable SD card memory loss since the update. Is it the upgrade or one of the apps I've downloaded since then. It seems to happen when I use picsaypro and an online animator even if I don't save anything.

Ive had an HTC G1 and I now have the Samsung Behold II. Theres a problem I've noticed on both phones. Lets say I have 60mb of flash memory and I download an app that is 5mb. That would put me down to 55 if my 2nd grade math serves me correctly. Now if I were to uninstall this app, my phone will only go back up to 58mb. Even after restarting the phone 10 times, taking the battery out or doing whatever, it remains at 58mb of memory.
I want to know why does this happen? And is there any way to recover that lost storage? I just find it a bit crappy management of memory. Because this problem can be more drastic, I downloaded a 20mb app which sucked balls, to which I quickly uninstalled. I only got 12mb of the 20 back. Thats 8mb lost somewhere. Again, I'm looking for at the very least an explanation

When I install my application with Eclipse ADT (by simply run and choose device that appears in the list) through USB onto device, sometimes I noticed it consumes internal memory (storage) space even though application is already loaded on the device (exactly same version - just some minor code changes)As my application size getting big, this is really annoying because eventually it will use up all initial storage space of ~70MB and I have to factory reset in order for me to continue testing my application on real device.I did little investigation and find out this seems to happen when
1) load/run application onto device for first time with USB
2) disconnect USB
3) restart Eclipse
4) connect device and try to load/run application onto device
5) internal memory goes down by application size ...
and it does NOT seem to happen as long as I keep USB connection and Eclipse still recognize the device. I'm just guessing here, but maybe does Eclipse ADT creates temporary file of some kind that's get left behind when I disconnect USB? I'm running RC30 so I don't have root access and can't check system files/folders but is there any way to look for these temp files (if any) and clear out either from Eclipse, or using adb shell command? So for now, I leave my device connected to Eclipse all the time but I want to use it as phone as well as sometimes I want to show to my friends to get some feedback etc it would be really nice if I can somehow load application onto device, disconnect and keep testing/using phone.Has anyone experience this issue? If so, is there any walk around to this problem? Or could you point me out what I'm doing wrong here? I tried few things myself, such as close Eclipse right after I launch my application on device, disconnect USB etc but nothing seem to work.

Ever since the 2.1 OTA update that I received back in July, my phone has been burning through the battery quickly and places that I usually get a 3G signal I now get no signal and the big X in the signal bar.

I use advanced task killer to keep things under control, and handcent in favor of the stock msg app. I notice that I have upwards of 80mb free memory after killing tasks after a reboot. Over the course of the day, with only my ignored apps running, that number shrinks to 48-50mb. Does that indicate a leak somewhere?

Ok, so I have the Hero and so far, I have 30 market apps installed. The problem is, I went to download a ringer from myxer and the phone responded that I didn't have enough space to do so. What? I checked the space available and it said only 44mb. I'm not that smart with smart phones, but I know something's not adding up. I've tried turining the phone off and on w/o success.

I've down loaded quite a few apps that I have since uninstalled. I noticed that they are still listed on the My Downloads list with an option to reinstall. My question is, are these apps gone or are they still taking up some of the precious memory? If they are, is there a way to free upmore space by completely removing them?

Yesterday, according to the internal memory widget, I had used up 143mb of my allotted 159mb. Needing more space, I uninstalled two apps, (Paper Toss and PDF Viewer) that were about 3MB each. I also cleared my dalvik cache. My phone was then down to 136MB used. Today, my phone is back up to 143MB used. I haven't installed any apps since yesterday. What happened to those 6MB that I freed up?? (Rooted and running Fresh 2.0d and I am not using apps2sd)

I love my hero, so please don't read this post as one of those whiny rants. I would love any feedback/suggestions for those of you who are in a similar situation as me. I have owned my hero since september, and for the past month I have been riding the edge of my internal memory being completely full. I have 104 apps (including stock) totalling 144mb of my 159mb available. I am at the point that I can't update any apps (increases their size) and if I want a new app, I have to go through my phone and delete ones I think I can live without. I clear my caches regularly and I am at the point where I am just maxed out. If I get too close to the limit, my phone gets extremely laggy, and goes crazy at reboot and everything force closes until I delete some apps and reboot (that is a whole different issue). Is anyone facing this issue and if so, how do you deal with it?

I apologize if this is a question that has been asked before. But, I wasn't able to find a thread that really answered my question.
I run Aloysius 2.1 as my ROM, and I run Darktremor 2.7 apps2sd. I have a 16gb sd card, and it is partitioned. The apps that I download are being saved to the sd card. But, yesterday, I had to data/factory reset, wipe dalvik-cache, and wipe SD:ext partition. With the help ofKelmar I was able to get things working again. After I got it working, and did a nandroid restore, I still had to go re-download all the apps that I had. Prior to doing this my internal storage showed around 40-41mb. It now shows only 23mb after re-downloading all the apps I had. I know that the apps are being saved to my sd card, but, I would like to figure out why my internal memory is still decreasing, and why it is so low in the first place since I am running apps2sd?

My internal memory has a parasite that is slowly eating it away. I have figured out that when internal memory gets below 16MB it turns on the little warning in the status bar. So, this is how I'm checking my internal memory so everyone that takes their time to respond to me is using the same method. I got to Settings> SD&Phone Storage, at the bottom of the screen that comes up is the "Internal Phone Storage" Available space and mine says 15.84MB. Today I installed a highly rated memory manager from the Market and it didn't help at all. So my first question is How much "internal Phone Storage" do you have left?
Now my second question is when you got to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> and scroll way down to "Mail - HTC Corporation" and click on that. Now look at the storage. Mine says 15.64 MB Total. Which breaks down there to Application 2.59MB and Data at 13.05MB. Clearly my Mail program is holding the biggest chunk of memory. But I want to know how this compares to everyone else's. If this is true then it would account for the parasitic growth or loss of my memory.
So if I'm way different then this will start a good discussion on what to do about this problem. Just let me say at this point that I delete all email once I have read it. I delete the sent, draft and Trash folders too. I also go into the SD Card and delete everything that is in the .Mail folder too. So if my phone is storing old email now I have to find out where and delete it.........
I so appreciate everyone weighing in on this perplexing problem.

I just rooted my Hero last week (running Fresh 2.3.3), and somehow I'm already low on internal memory. I don't think I have that many large apps installed. I sorted my apps by size and here are my top 10.
1. Maps 7.60mb
2. Documents to Go 5.59mb
3. Yelp 5.23mb
4. Facebook 4.21mb
5. Where 3.75mb
6. Astro 3.52mb
7. Mail 3.41mb
8. Handcent SMS 3.21mb
9. Dolphin Browser HD 2.99mb
10. Twitter 2.95mb
Any solutions?

Well my Hero still has a disappearing memory problem. The top five memory hogs that I have are as follows:
HTC Mail at 23mb
Maps at 9mb
Contacts Storage at 8mb
ES File Explorer at 6.5mb
Quick Office at 4.0mb
I have a great Cache Cleaner that the last time recovered me back to 40mb of memory but now I'm down to 18mb with everything and it still seems to be disappearing. Any idea's? I don't sync with Facebook or Google. I store NO mail in either of my two mail accounts and I use Handcent for me txting and I don't save anything there that I'm aware of. This phone just has a habit of consuming memory.
This phone is running Damage Controls last 2.1 rom too.

I am using NFX 2.2....I enabled, or thought I enabled, apps2sd, my internal memory is still going down. I understand that email uses memory but, my folders are empty. Also, I do not see any of my apps on my sd card, which leads me to believe they are still in the internal memory. Any help or tips would be appreciated. I also tried to enable JIT via the gscript. Maybe I am doing something wrong with gscript. I found the script and saved it, rebooted phone. Please help....

I think I've got a memory leak somewhere. I'm running DC v2.08.1 and I've got a low memory error. It may be because I flashed from Fresh 2.0D to this without wiping, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any ideas how I can figure it out without wiping. I'd really rather not wipe again.

I wiped and flashed fresh 2.1.2 and initially it gave me about 90mb free after a clean and fresh install. After I installed all my apps I still had about 70mb left. But during the past few days I've noticed the internal memory slowly decreasing or leaking even though I haven't downloaded anything new. I've lost about 10mb by doing absolutely nothing.

I just received my first warning "my internal memory was getting low". I have the same number of apps I installed 5 months ago. But my internal memory has been steadily going down. I have cleared out browser cache, cookies, form data and any thing I could shut off or eliminate. I still only have 17 mb. Of memory left. My phone is getting sluggish too.

(Just flashed Fresh 2.1.1 over 2.0d and everything is working as it should now. Phone is noticeably faster after I screwed it up spending countless hours trying to get this to work. Thanks Flipz!)
I am running Fresh 2.0d and I have apps2sd working with an ext3 partition. (I know this because the phone basically dies if I unplug the SD card and because there is an app folder under /system/sd/app). I still have very low internal memory (about 23mb remaining). It seems that when I install an app, it installs on the SD card and on the phone's internal memory. What's going on! I have also tried rebooting and repartitioning the SD card.

I believe an app I installed put over 20 megs of space on my phone's memory (not the SD card) and when I uninstalled it, it did not remove it.
I have an un-rooted phone.
What is the best file manager to use to access the phone memory and see where the issue is, and allow me to delete it myself?
