HTC Desire :: Playing Windows Media Video Files On Desire
Jun 2, 2010I'm new to the Android OS having been a Symbian (2nd phone is a Nokia N97) and Windows Mobile user previously. My question regards a copy of Family Guy (Something, Something, Something, Dark Side) which I purchased yesterday. The standard DVD also comes with a digital copy on the DVD which, when inserted into the drive brings up a choice of transferring the file to my computer to be copied over to my Desire as either a iTunes file or a Windows Media Video (WMV).Ideally I want to avoid the iTunes route as currently I have no use for that program on my system so I would like to be able to use the WMV version. When I copied the file to my Desire, it didn't play and the phone didn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone please give me advice on how to play a WMV on my Desire?

May 28, 2010I have a Desire and I'm trying to transfer MP3s and video across in Windows Explorer. However I can only seem to get around 100MB of files across then I get the error message:
Cannot read from the source file or disk
I'm using a 16Gb card that worked fine in my G1. Windows reports that there is over 14Gb free. I've tried formatting the card via the phone and using other software to transfer the files eg Doubletwist but I still get the same problems.

Jul 13, 2010Running windows 7 64bit with the newest windows media player, fully updated in windows update. When I shoot a video on my phone it has audio (obviously), but when I copy it over to my PC and play it there is no sound.

Aug 24, 2010I have a new desire. The new Telstra 3G sim mangles the contacts on getting them out of the old Nokia. I can sync the nokia to windows 7 contacts. It would appear that htc sync only looks for the old outlook express windows address book. Is there a fix for this as I can't get the contacts from 1 phone to the other.

Jun 17, 2010I'm a new HTC Desire user and was wondering if any of you could recommend the best app to use for Windows live messenger. I was going to download meebo from the market, but just before installing I read a warning that the app could prevent the phone from sleeping. Obviously this would then cause the battery to die faster, which is a concern for me. Does Meebo actually prevent the phone from sleeping? I want a decent messenger app that closes when I log out of my windows live messenger account and doesn't prevent the phone from sleeping and run down the battery.

Jul 14, 2010I can install and run HTC Sync on my laptop okay. I can even sync my Desire no problem. Trouble is, while I have HTC Sync on my laptop, Windows Explorer will not work. It shuts down and then tries unsuccessfully to restart. Doing a system restore to remove HTC Sync cures the problem. Anyone else having these problems? Any ideas how to fix it. I am running Windows 7 (32 bit).

HTC Desire :: Resolve Hostname Of Windows Workgroup Devices?
Sep 17, 2010Today though I was investigating a non responsive NAS drive that wasn't responding. When I went to it's location I rebooted it and thought hang on I can check it's working from here.So i fired up my terminal emulator app to ping it. However that's when I realised that linux doesn't appear to resolve windows networking hostnames. So my only option would have been to know the IP address.Is there any workarounds for this? My phone isn't rooted.I was wondering if there was some way to interegate a PC for it's hosts knowledge.. Even if that meant running a process on that computer which updated a list that could then be served to my phone.. but then that would only work if the phone has the abilty to then translate hostnames to ip addresses, especially since I don't have access to etc/hosts.So imagine you are outside and want to ping your computer but don't know it's ip address but you know the computer name. How would you do it?I realise now I could have opened up the router admin page to see attached devices but any other suggestions welcomed.

Now a strange thing is occurring. I installed an off market app, but I can only see its folder in Android's File Manager, not in Windows XP.
This is going to cause me serious problems because I need to transfer some files into that folder from my PC.
How can I access this App's folder in Win XP?
HTC Desire : Windows Always Wants To Scan (and Correct) SD Card / Stop Nuisance?
Jul 28, 2010Whenever I connect my Desire in "disk-mode" a Windows 7 alert pops up telling me that there might be a problem with my disk and asking whether I want to scan and fix the drive. No matter what I respond (if I agree to have it scanned it will do so and always reports "no issues found"), it will invariably come up with that popup again the next time I attach the phone.
When I take the SD card out of the mobile and put it in my card reader and then do a "chkdsk" on the drive, it also always tells me, that there is no problem.
So, why does Windows then always see a problem when attaching the Desire in disk mode? Is there a way to stop this nuisance?

If you did a branded upgrade (e.g. Vodafone) then the old methods won't work at all.Since current rooting methods won't work on froyo this can be a big problem.I've created a tool that will downgrade Froyo to stock 2.1. May 21, 2010I have had DC 2.08.1 installed for about 2 weeks with no issues. I decided to go ahead and partition the SD to utilized apps2SD as I was having memory issues. That process, while not smooth, went through okay and the SD card is working with the partition and apps2SD. However, ever since that was completed, my Windows 7 box no longer recognizes the phone either as a phone or as a drive. My Linux laptop recognizes the drive without issue.
Any suggestions on how I can reintroduce my phone to the Windows box, at least as a drive?

Nov 13, 2010Pardon my lay language, but have just got a new desire HD. I Love it in every way (yet to decide on battery life.....), except that i cant seem to open any more desktops.
The above perhaps isn;t the word- but im referring to the main desktop you get having pressed "home". You can then zoom out to view all 7 "desktops".
I would like a couple more of these desktops for different appts and widgets- how can i create these? Or is it not possible?

May 13, 2010I have tried to transfer an mp4 (Terminator salvation) from a laptop to my phone and when I play it, I get the 'cannot play video' message.I thought that I may have done something wrong when transferring so today I also tested it via Bluetooth with a friend who also has the desire but on o2 (I am with Orange). I turned on the ftp server and it took the file via, went to 100% completing the BT transfer but again, when I try and play it I get the exact same message. This file was also mp4. This file works on his Desire (it is a 26 minute cartoon called the Boondocks) but not mine. I cannot understand the inconsistency as you would think that the same would apply to both mine and his.My last phone was a n95 and I am not someone who regularly takes an interest in new gadgets coming out, making this big jump (only ever used Nokia's and Ericson's before the desire). However, I have had a new phone (always top of the range through upgrade) every 12/18 months since 2001 so I am very much used to adjusting to new phones, albeit not the 'smartphone' generation. So I am not a technophobe but nor am I a tech geek. But I cannot for the life of me work this one out.
