HTC Desire :: Removing Shortcut Labels From Icons
Sep 7, 2010
I've been having fun customizing the look of my phone and getting more and more out of it. Recently I've been making custom shortcuts as I like having different icons. What I don't like is that there's a label on the Icon. The icon pack I am currently using is Manups Simple Word. What happens is when I create a Shortcut to the market for example the Icon shows in text Market Stock and then beneath it the Label Market. I don't like that if read together it becomes Market Stock Market
Is there a way I can remove the labels from shortcuts? I am currently running Froyo with LauncherPro using folder organizer and I also have anycut. The solution must not involve rooting or using any paid apps as well I can't get paid apps here. I read here Is it possible to strip HTC Sense UI from the HTC Desire? that Helix has the option to remove labels from shortcuts. I'll rather not move to Helix and stay with launcherpro.

Hello everyone. Is there a feature or a check box that I am missing that allows you to turn off the little text labels beneath the application icons on the home screen? I'm kind of doubtful, but a search did not return an answer. It would certainly clean up the home screen. Plus a lot of labels are "cut off" due to length and that is just annoying.

I don't want to see the text labels, but I want everything else to stay the same. I don't want to use Home++ or anything else that fundamentally changes the Android experience. Could an app be made to do this?

Wish there was a way to remove an icon from the notification bar - pretty much everyone has a larger clock widget on the home screen - it's redundant. And don't need to be reminded we have an alarm set constantly.
There's not an app for that is there?

I used Titanium Backup to freeze, then uninstall some of the bloatware apps on my DX. However, the icons are still found in the app tray and clicking them generates a FC.Is there any way to get rid of the icons permanently? I know I can hide them with LPP but that only hides them; I want to eliminate them.

I know with most icons, you can just hold them down and it gives you the option to change their representing icon. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with links to websites.

This question might be specific to HTC phones, but I'm not sure. I have various bookmarks for sites with decent webapps that I'd like to have as icons on my homescreen. What I would like is for their icons to be specific to the site (like iOS or BlackBerry), but instead what happens is I get the ugly red HTC Sense bookmark icon for each of them. Any way to get the site-specific icons to appear (or if it's even possible)?

Finally rooted my 2.2 leaked X. After going through the phone and renaming apps I wanted removed, certain ones are still there. Block Buster, News/weather and Social networking. I've cleaned the cache with cache cleaner and even done a battery pull. No go. I've even tried renaming them back to stock(apk)then back to bak.

I am running Apex Launcher Pro and have started to notice a problem. When I uninstall apps that I have in folders in Apex Launcher Pro, the icons for those apps are not being removed when i uninstall the apps. I uninstalled roughly 30-40 apps not too long ago and they are all still present in my app folders on my desktop. Is there a way to have Apex remove these icons when uninstalling apps? Currently I have to go and test icons to see if the apps are installed or uninstalled in order to test them, which can be quite annoying if you have a large number of apps.
I am running the latest Apex on a Verizon GS3 running Synergy ROM.

Issue with a custom ROM I've been playing around with in an attempt at customizing it to meet my personal needs.
Basically, the custom ROM installation removes old, unwanted .apk's from the stock image it is replacing. This is done by a script/command in the META-INF->com->google->android->updater-script file. Here's an excerpt as an example:
Code:
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "/system");
show_progress(1, 100);
package_extract_dir("system", "/system");delete("/system/app/Launcher2.apk");
However, while the script works perfectly to remove the actual apk's/apps from the device, once the custom ROM is loaded, the old shortcuts (to some of the apps that were uninstalled) remain on the homescreen (these shortcuts are placed there by default by the stock ROM). If you try to tap the shortcut, it simply states something to the effect of "this application is not installed on your device". While these "dead" shortcuts can be moved to the trash bin and deleted from the homescreen, it'd be nice if I could make it so the custom ROM installation automatically does this.
I've tried modifying the Launcher2.apk to reflect the changes I am looking for; but to no avail. In the Launcher2 /res/xml/default_workspace.xml file, I am easily able to specify which apps I do want shortcuts placed on the homescreen for during the installation. But - there doesn't seem to be a way for me to issue a command to remove the old, unwanted shortcuts and these "dead" shortcuts are present nonetheless, despite whatever changes I make to the default_workspace.xml (it does add my "new" shortcuts, though).
Any way that this could be done during the actual custom ROM installation process? And where would I add it to (default_workspace.xml, Android Manifest.xml, framework-res.apk, boot.img...

Eventually found out how to do this as there was a customize feature on the HTC Magic. The solution is to do it through Google Contacts and then synchronize the contacts back to the phone. Simple - pity no one at HTC Support seemed to know.

Just wanted to ask if anyone knows of a good solution for bookmark labels or folders? Honestly, great web browsing is the biggest selling point for android, and no decent browser apart from opera supports that basic function (sadly, safari has it licked, bookmark manager on the iPhone is great). I've tried some market apps, but they either don't recognize bookmarks from dolphin or just plain suck.

How can I get the vanilla (Nexus style) contacts and dialer on my Desire? It can store custom labels in even phone contacts. I had flashed to a LeeDroid 2.1 ROM earlier and noticed that it had the vanilla contacts and dialer in addition to the normal Desire Sense one. So I know it's possible. Lekky has also a link to the Nexus gallery app, so this gives me even more confidence that the contacts and dialer app must be available somewhere too.

This isn't a /major/ problem but it will irritate me if I can't find a solution! How can I get rid of all the game demos that Orange have so thoughtfully installed on my Desire? I've had a look in Settings > Applications but the Uninstall option for these doesn't show up.

I've been meaning to ask this for a while but haven't got around to it.When you uninstall an app from your phone, via the market, that is the app entirely removed from your phone, isn't it?Is there any way of removing the previously installed apps from your downloads list on your market? Or are they there for your reference?

Right, all my appointments are stored on my Outlook calendar at work. I can't get activesync to work with my server, so let's ignore that option. What I have been doing is using Google Calendar sync running on my PC to sync entries to my Google calendar. So far so good. Now initially, I synced my Desire to Google Calendar using the "Google" account in "Accounts and Settings". that worked fine. The entries in the Calendar app were given a blue stripe to identify them as being from the Google sync account.
I wanted to start using Google's own exchange servers to get my email and when I added that as a new account, I saw I could also sync calendar via the google activesync account. So I tried that too and predictably I got duplicate and double entries (oooo-er) in my Calendar app. So I just unticked the Google calendar and used the google-exchange one instead. Now today I wanted to do some large scale tidying up and noticed that in my Calendar, I have entries (orange stripe) which are listed as "Exchange" entries but under the Calendar settings - there is no longer an Exchange calendar!
All I have is PC Sync - nothing on that one
And Google sync! (the blue entries)
So how do I get rid of the exchange entries?
