HTC Desire :: Force Apps To Install To SD Without Root
Aug 27, 2010
This was linked to within the Froyo Tips thread above however the link connected to a Blog where the blogger no longer wished to support the advice contained therein. He also appears to have taken down his blog completely since then.So here is the guide to installing your apps to SD by default by using the Android SDK and your phone attached to your PC under Disk drive while having USB Debugging active, to have all apps you download install to SD by default.

Do I need to root my phone to install apps with ADB?I think I followed all of the tutorials online for setting up ADB right, but when I try to install an app, it says "access denied" or something.Do I need root to get this to work, or am I doing something else wrong?

My phone is telling me my internal storage is nearly full, whereas I have a 4gb microsd card which is not being used.
How do I move my applications to the SD card (or how do I have my apps automatically install there in the future)

I DLd apps before I got my phone, not knowing I'd need root.I was using a file explorer last night to browse my phone, found the apps which remained untouched, then opened and used the installer bam 2 apps installed, after DLing them using my laptop and transferring them to my phone. Get that! WITHOUT ROOT!

What apps can we force close to optimize battery and processor? Can we force close these running apps?
I currently have and thinking of ending:
Astro - I have this on a folder, must this always stay running?
Bluetooth share - when Bluetooth is Off, can this be ended?
Facebook - used when connected with wifi, can this be ended when not connected/wifi or when not using?
Facebook for HTC Sense - used when connected with wifi, can this be ended when not connected/wifi? widget not used
Flickr - not used (maybe when connected with wifi)
FM Radio - not using but app running
Footprints - widget not used, not using but app is running
Friend Stream - not using but app running, widget not used
LED Light - widget used
Peep - not using but app running
Photoshop.com mobile - on a folder, can this be ended when not used?
YouTube - widget used
I'm not using an app to end these, just the Settings/Applications/Manage applications.

New member as I got my Desire today to replace my Iphone and so far I am loving the phone. What I would like to know is: is it only possible to download and install apps for the Desire via the PC first and then HTC sync them?Or is there a way to download & install directly to the Desire?

What is the best way for restoring apps after a ROM install. Currently I am using Defrost but it updates that often I try to keep up. I have got into the practice of making a backup using ROM manager then doing a full cache and data wipe before installing the new ROM.
I have been letting the phone do its own thing and eventually the apps seem to restore themselves eventually, but is there a quicker way to restore them after a full wipe.

Does anyone know if it's possible to install apps on my Desire which have already been downloaded and saved to my PC? My previous Nokia had an app installer programme. Is there one for the Desire/Android?

I used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

I upgraded my Desire to Froyo yesterday using the LeeDroid Mod and everything went smoothly. The only problem I've come across is recovering apps that I've paid for. I've been searching around the internet (and here) and everything suggests they should be in the "Download" section of the market, but they're not. I've used the same account, complete with the email receipts you get for each purchase, but nothing is showing up.

I was running rooted 2.1 and then did a clean install to 2.2. I went to marketplace, and SOME of my previously paid for apps showed up as 'purchased' which I then reinstalled fine, but a lot of the rest are not even appearing when I search for them, although their free demo versions do appear. My google checkout lists all the apps I paid for no problems when I look at purchase history on a computer, but still, I cannot even search for these paid apps, let alone attempt to install them!

My Desire started to refuse to install new applications or update old ones. They would download fine but then I'd get a message saying "Installation unsuccessful" but not give me any further information as to why that is. When using .apk files, I get "Application not installed" but no further information as well.
I have enough space on both the phone and the SD card and I am running a rooted 2.2 original ROM.
So I'm stuck and I need your help. Why does this happen and how can I find out?

To those who have rooted their Desire, this may sound a bit odd, but just humour me, rooting my phone, mainly because Im very paranoid about getting it wrong, and also it seems like a hell of a lot of fiddling for little gain. The only benefit I really want from rooting is to remove the dumbass demo apps Telstra installed. Is is possible to remove those apps on an un-rooted Desire? Would I be correct in saying that ADB could do it?

Recently rooted and now running a MoDaCo 3.1 rom.
So far I have discovered Set CPU, which seems great for saving battery.
Has Anyone else found any decent battery saving root apps that I could apply?
Also, what are your favourite root access apps?
I have rom manager and tried adfree android, but that didn't like editing the hosts file and didn't block the ads I hoped.

Recently rooted, and Market says there is updates, but it can't update them. The apps were included as part of leedroid 2.2f. I've read that I can use Titanium to uninstall the app (e.g. maps) then install again from the market. Is this correct, don't want to upset anything.

Is it possible to force install apk on non rooted device?I had my Sony tablet S rooted and using lucky patcher I removed ads from some app. This created odex file. Lately I've installed the new official update, knowing that I will loose root (which I did not really need anyway). Now, there is no root for this new version yet and due to the odex file for the app created on /data I cannot install this app via market/adb. I know with factory reset it will resolved by I cannot backup my apps now (remember, no root)

Each time I try to access my "gallery" I get a force close. It will let me open the main gallery folder, but as soon as I select a sub folder it force closes. Any ideas why this may be happening or how to stop it? I don't know if this is a root issue or not but i figured some of the most "informed" people hang out here. Its making it very hard to customize anything.

yesterday my phone fell off my hand, so the touchscreen is unusable... so the phone. The trouble is that I'm... well... not very clever at all, so all my contacts are on the phone itself, not the SIM card or my Google account. That's why I need to get into the root files with my computer, to find out the databases files.
The USB debugging mode wasn't activated I think. But I'm pretty sure there's a way to force mounting system files, even with a command line...
My phone is a "Le Mobile Sosh", a branded Alcatel OneTouch Idol Mini with Android 4.2.

I just rooted my X10 mini pro today using the one touch root app, but i'm having really bad/annoying problems with it only things i have removed or changed is i removed some of the telstra apps that came on it and the games that had expired before i bought the phone.
But now i cant install anything from the app store because it force closes every time i try, it froze up on me earlier and the only way i could get it back was to pull the battery and since then none of the google app suite work, i tried to hard reset the phone back to factory by booting holding the app+back+power keys but that only booted into safe mode, i cant find any restore factory settings option anywhere.
