HTC Desire :: Favourite Apps For Root Users
Jul 15, 2010
Recently rooted and now running a MoDaCo 3.1 rom.
So far I have discovered Set CPU, which seems great for saving battery.
Has Anyone else found any decent battery saving root apps that I could apply?
Also, what are your favourite root access apps?
I have rom manager and tried adfree android, but that didn't like editing the hosts file and didn't block the ads I hoped.

I know there is one of these on the Apps board but I was wondering what your favourite app or apps are on your Desire.
Mine?
1 - Hancent (free) - So much more customisable and just so much better than the stock sms app. I particularly like setting a different colour icon for people, meaning I know who has text me without looking.
2 - Thinking Space (free) - Mind mapping app, I find it really useful for many things, especially when I can take down ideas when I am on the move and can't access my PC.
3 - Bebbled (free) - A great little time wasting game, I have wasted many an hour on this one.

I'm thinking of installing this app, as the rom that I'm using allows to be over clocked and under clocked, i believe. What i want to know is, what is it all about? i have seen the terms mentioned and all that, but I'm not entirely sure what its all to do with, what will the advantages be? and what is the best way to use it?

I'm having trouble using the favourites widget. I can manage my favourites using the dropdown in 'people' when viewing my phonebook.I can add favourites.I want to add 2 favourites for a contact I call and text (one shortcut for call, one for text).I can add one or the other, but not both. Is there a simpe way around this? (I don't want a shortcut on the main screen, I want to use the favourites widget)

I know there is a dedicated section for apps, but they work different on each phone, so what are my fellow DHD users using.
My current Top 10
1 Winamp
An excellent replacement, tried a few after being spoilt rotten by the iPhone's music player. In Winamp, I've finally found a music player to compare to this.
2 Peep
The standard HTC Twitter client looks good and is easy to use.
3 Tune In Radio
Not really used this much but used it loads on the iPhone. A huge directory of stations to listen to.
4 MP3 Music Downloader
Get music tracks for FREE (legally debatable) But what I like is the ability to preview on the go, nice if you think "I wish I could listen to that track right now"
5 Google Maps
Superb free navigation, used it to find a pub I wanted to go to (on foot) Drains the battery if you have it on for too long though
FOUR GREAT GAMES
6 Paper Toss
7 Angry Birds
8 Teeter
9 Bubble
10 Backgrounds - shed loads of free backgrounds to choose for your phone, nice and easy to use, all in catagories for easy navigation

I'm trying to tether using my Mac and Android Wifi Tether app but it has been unsuccessful so far.
It looks like there's an incompatibility between OSX and Android Wifi Tether.
Are there any alternatives for root users to tether using a Mac?

To those who have rooted their Desire, this may sound a bit odd, but just humour me, rooting my phone, mainly because Im very paranoid about getting it wrong, and also it seems like a hell of a lot of fiddling for little gain. The only benefit I really want from rooting is to remove the dumbass demo apps Telstra installed. Is is possible to remove those apps on an un-rooted Desire? Would I be correct in saying that ADB could do it?

This was linked to within the Froyo Tips thread above however the link connected to a Blog where the blogger no longer wished to support the advice contained therein. He also appears to have taken down his blog completely since then.So here is the guide to installing your apps to SD by default by using the Android SDK and your phone attached to your PC under Disk drive while having USB Debugging active, to have all apps you download install to SD by default.

Recently rooted, and Market says there is updates, but it can't update them. The apps were included as part of leedroid 2.2f. I've read that I can use Titanium to uninstall the app (e.g. maps) then install again from the market. Is this correct, don't want to upset anything.

I need someone with an unrooted LG Ally to test my 2 Click Root scripts. This is for Mac users only. Please Direct Message me or message me on twitter @northmendo if you are interested in testing. If all goes well I will release to the public asap. Also it helps if you already have adb configured but I can help with that if you don't.

Haven't seen this posted yet so here it is. 3d launcher 2 for non root users running OTA 2.1. Search for "Clockwork mod Launcher" Or "launcher 2" on the market. It will cost you but the devs deserve the donate cause it's not an easy task to get a working 3d launcher on droid let alone one that runs good.

I am able to detect and connect to my phone with my computer. The problem is I cant get on the internet with it. It acts like its crunching away when I open the browser and then I get a "limited connectivity" pop up on the computer. The phone only shows like 3kb downloaded and 30k uploaded. Any ideas or is my connection just that slow? I am using bugles 0.8.6. on the droid.

I have rooted my hero and am currently running fresh 1.1 ROM, and I got the wireless tether for root users and its been working great until last night. I was having extremely slow speeds and was going to try disconnecting and reconnecting but as soon as I disconnected, my phone rebooted. Now, every time I go into the wireless tether for root users app, it force closes. What the Hell am I supposed to do? I need this to work.

Let me preface I love this app and am not really complaining, just have something that has come up. Anyone else experience it dropping the internet connection or wifi after about an hour? It works great up to that point and doesn't show an error or anything but it just stops communicating. I have to stop tethering and start tethering and its back up again. Its not a huge issue, just something that I would resolve if I could. It was happening on pre9 but I upgraded to pre13 and it still happens. Im on Myns RLS3 with Netarchy 4191bfs kernel but it was doing it on the stock HTC #10 kernel that came with Myns.

The best WiFi/BT tether/hotspot app out there has just added support for the EVO 4G about half an hour ago. Of course, root is required but it's just one click away with unrevoked. Forget Sprint's $30 a month tether - this one is free and supported by the community. This is why I love Android. All info here:
Rooted EVO 4G Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Free WiFi/Bluetooth Tether (Hotspot) As Android-wifi-tether App Adds Support For EVO

The answer is probably no, but is there a way for non-root users to customize their notification bar. Maybe change the color of the bar or different battery or signal strength notifications.

I've been trying to use Wireless Tether with my laptop and have noticed that it is extremely finicky. It usually works for a minute or two but then I can't load anything at all on my laptop. I'm not doing any heavy activity or anything, just browsing some websites, but it does this consistently. I have to toggle it off and on and reconnect my laptop before I can use the internet again. No error messages or anything, it just gets stuck at 0.0 kbps on my phone as if my computer isn't communicating with it anymore.
Does anyone have this problem or is this just a common limitation with ad hoc networks? Is there another solution out there? I'm using the leaked Froyo rom but noticed this with the official 2.1 rom too. Doesn't 2.2 come with built-in hotspot capabilities? I wouldn't mind using wired tethering either, but it looks like that won't happen until we can get a custom kernel?

I have had a Milestone running Android 2.1 for about a week.
Just thought I'd share the list of my favourite apps:
k-9 email (the only Android email client with imap idle push email, afaik)

Email Popup (for K-9 email): pops up a small box every time a new email is received
SMS Popup (as above, for text messages)
pure calendar widget
remember the milk (to do list; Astrid is a free alternative, and connects to the RTM servers, too)
Websms (with fishtext connector): sends cheap sms with fishtext
ContactsGroupU: shows contacts by group
a online radio
ColorNote
Fring (skype, messenger etc)
Quicksettings
EboBirthday
battery indicator (Darshan computing)
Profiles (egg 'n stone)
KeePassDroid (keepass password manager)
Multilang dictionary
Google translate
yxflash (to watch divx videos)
Startup auditor (checks which apps start at boot up)
android mate (organizes apps by category)
any cut: customizable shortcuts

This is for all of you who are having troubles getting your application "Wireless Tether for Root Users" to work. I personally kept getting an error on which would say "Initializing WiFi Interface: Failed." I have since been able to get it to work. Here's how.
Disclaimer: Obviously you need a rooted phone for this to work, We're in Root forums for a reason. You will also need the Amon Recovery Partition.
Steps:
1. Boot phone into Recovery by holding Volume Up + Power (End Button).
2. Wipe phone of all data.
3. Flash to the 0_3 rom, install Astro File Manager from the Market
4. Download and install file from below and place into phones SD card.
5. Install from Astro by opening it in App Manger, Open up application and enjoy!
Wireless Tether!

I have a droid X I just got not very long ago at all and a friend told me how to use the rooted version to play xbox live and things like MW2 online using the tether...so I think I rooted my phone it says it is.
I used androot and it seems to have rooted my phone however it does not ask me permission(yet i literally just downloaded it) now my question is this:
I have downloaded wireless tether for root users version 2.0.1(I am running 2.1 update1) I am not sure if that was the correct version...but I am online so I assume so.
How do I open the NAT settings on the wifi however? that is the whole point of me doing this charade and I cannot figure it out. I try to play MW2 online and it says they are strict.
