Is it possible to share apps installed on the device across multiple users?

Android :: Sharing Data Between Users

Aug 25, 2010

I'm writing a game that includes an editor for users to create their own levels. I'd like players to be able to share the levels they've created with other players. I'm trying to figure out the best way of implementing that, and hoping for any advice on the subject.

One obvious option is to set up a server for sharing levels. The game would connect directly to the server to let players share their creations or download levels created by other players. This provides seamless integration and a good user experience, but I'd really prefer not to use this approach. For one thing, I don't want the cost and responsibility of setting up and maintaining the server. And I would be taking on a basically unlimited obligation; otherwise, if I decided to shut down the server a few years from now, the game would suddenly lose a large part of its value.

Another idea I had is to use the Android Market as the way to distribute sets of levels. That way, Google is taking care of running the server for me. Clearly there are programs that work this way, since I've seen lots of themes and expansion packs for particular applications in the Market. While this could work, I'm not very happy with it. Asking an ordinary user to sign up for a developer account on the Market and learn how to post files through it is unreasonable, not to mention they would have to pay $25.

The approach I'm currently leaning toward is allowing levels to be exported as ordinary files. People could then just email them to each other, post them on any website they wanted, etc. Ideally I would want to set up a file type association so they could simply open an email attachment or click a link in the web browser, and my game would automatically be launched to import it. I haven't yet looked into whether that's possible.

Sharing Comments Between Users?

Jan 16, 2012

I'm currently planning to develop an application which will allow users to share comments (similar to tweets, facebook status', etc.) which can then be viewed by other users. This is only a small part of the app, however it is the one part with which I'm having trouble with.

My issue is that I'm not sure how to go about designing this. I've read up a little about SQLite and creating databases, however I'm not sure this is the route I should be looking at. Essentially what I need is to have an area where users can select a category from a provided list, post a comment to this category and be able to view any other comments.

General :: Share Paid Apps With Other Users On Android 4.2?

Nov 17, 2012

1. You need a device running Android 4.2 (no root needed).

2. Create a new user as usual (follow the Android tutorial).

2.5. Verify everything is ok for this user.

3. Once done, go into this new user settings (don't switch back to your main/admin account).

4. Add a new account, this time use the Google account on which you paid for your apps.

5. During the add account tutorial, make sure you unselect ALL syncing stuff. Very important!

6. Go to settings / applications and deactivate all the apps you don't want the new user to access (ex: gmail, calendar, etc...).

7. Launch the Google Play Store and select your main account, make sure you protect application purchase by a PIN.

8. Installed a paid apps under this account.

9. Enjoy!

WARNING 1: I had an issue with Google+ when I deactivated it, it removed the updated version (so when I switched back to my main account, I needed to update the app through Play Store). May happen to other apps.

WARNING 2: I don't know if it's related or not, but in the process, I needed to reboot my Nexus 7, it was slow and unresponsive (a process or app was sucking a lot of CPU cycle). But, it did not happened again.

TIP: Use email app instead of gmail to sync the other user mails.

CAVEAT: Experienced users or clever children may find how to reactivate the apps you locked, so you may want tu use an app locker instead of the "deactivate method".

It's not perfect but it works, it's enough for me. My daughters will enjoy their games and I know they will not mess the system. Tested on my Nexus 7 but I'm pretty sure it will work on all Android 4.2 devices.

General :: Sharing Google Play Account Without Sharing Everything Else?

Sep 19, 2012

I have my Google account also setup on my wife's phone so we can share purchased apps. However, everything else is shared too. For example, even though I have sync for everything on my account turned off, my calendar still showed up on my wife's phone until I disabled it in the calendar app. Also, I can't remove my Google Talk account from her phone so my messages show up on her phone.

This is on a pair of stock Samsung Galaxy S3 phones.

Android : Sharing Apps By QR Code?

Dec 22, 2009

Fred meets Bob at the pub and shows off the latest app he's installed.Bob likes it and wants to have it on his phone, too. Q: What's the best way for Fred to help Bob install an application? Hint: On a Palm, Fred would just 'beam' the app to Bob's pda (we're assuming that it's a freely downloadable app, not requiring payment or registration). On an Android phone, can Fred somehow share it over Bluetooth, or display a QR Code for the app so that Bob can use his Barcode Scanner to get it from the Market (or slimeme.org, or wherever)? As far as I know, no file manager has a "display barcode" function (like Contacts does when you have Barcode Scanner installed), so I'm forced to describe the app, or go into the application list and dig out its "com.vendor.app" name. This seems decidedly un-slick.

HTC EVO 4G : Looking For Way Of Sharing Apps

Jun 11, 2010

I'm new to Android with a HTC Evo and was curious about the app system of Android. The paid apps for the Android are they shareable? I was wondering if that was possible like how Apple let's you authorize 5 different computers to transfer your app purchases to others. Does the Android Market have that ability or do you have to buy it separately by each phone? I've searched the forums, but nobody seem to have an answer. Was hoping some of you veteran android users, would know.

Android :: Can Users Still Upgrade Apps After Seller Refunds And Cancellations?

Aug 30, 2010

I want to refund a customer's money without restricting their use of the app. Basically I want to give the app to some people for free by refunding their money. Prior to funds being transfered I can "Cancel entire order." After funds have been transfered I can "Refund Some Money." In either, or both, of these scenarios does the customer retain ownership of the app so they can still receive all future updates?

Android :: How To Restrict Droid Users To Launch Some Apps / Code To Do This

Jul 15, 2010

We want to develop an application which should be the only one our users should use. So we need to PREVENT them using other applications. (Mainly to make the maintenance support possible - we plan to buy at about 1000 phones, so the maintenance is tough task!) Is there any way to restrict the users?
For instance, is ADW Launcher able to do such things? Or is it possible to achieve this by coding our specific replacement of Home Launcher? And what about using some ASE scripts?
I am a beginner to Android OS, please do not assume any specific knowledge in your possible answers.

Motorola Droid X :: Apps To Think About For New Users

Nov 30, 2010

so im a huge fan of android and especially the Droid X. Im here to help those of you who are newbies to the Droid X or really any Droid. So here are some apps that have really made my Droid X a very great machine:Non-rooted phones: Astro file manager- simple app that lets you take a look into your phone and sd card memory and its free. Beautiful Widgets- a very nice clock widget similar to htc's stock clock but comes with other widget buttons like wifi and bluetooth etc. Costs about $1.50 but i stole my copy. Cherry Rplayer- a free satellite radio app. ChompSMS- a free txt message app that lets you totally customize how u send and read texts. Gtunes- free mp3 search engine where you can search and download music. HistoryEraser- erases history from your browser and even the market place.Yahoo! Mail- if you got Yahoo! this free app will let you know if you have a message in your yahoo! mail like Gmail does.PdaNet- free tethering app to give your computer internet thru your phone. It is free but you can not access private web pages but you can pay a one time fee to unlock all features. Power Control Plus- instead of the lame stock power control widget that came with the phone you can get this for .99 cents or steal for free and customize your own power control widget. Ring droid-free app which lets you customize your music into ringtones. TiKL touch to talk-if your on a strict calling plan get this..its a free walkie talkie type app that will let you talk to friends anywhere for free as long as your friends have it too. Wheres my droid?-if you miss place your phone and have it on silent this free app will make your droid ring untill you find out where its at.Lancher pro- there are tw versions of this home replacement app there is the free launcher pro and the paid version..paid version gives you access to your facebook and twitter on a single widget so you can update your status or post something on your wall all at once. It also has other widgets such as: twitter, facebook, calendar, friends and others. Free version does not have any of that. Now for you out there wanting to root your phone i have only a couple of apps that are really worth the download: Z4root- free rooting app that gives you the choice to temporary root or permanently root with one click. You can even un-root with one click. Droidoverclock- .99cents gets you this great overclocking app that can make your droid x go from 1000mhz(1ghz) to 1450mhz(1.45ghz) or even underclock if you wish. DroidX Bootstrap- $2 app lets you go into recovery mode to install themes and or ROMs. Well i hope i did some good for you newbies who are looking fir good apps to get the best out your droid x's. Stay Avid!

Has Anyone else found any decent battery saving root apps that I could apply?

Also, what are your favourite root access apps?

I have rom manager and tried adfree android, but that didn't like editing the hosts file and didn't block the ads I hoped.

General :: Share Media (files) Between Users In Android 4.2

Mar 23, 2013

How to share media between users in Android 4.2.2 (Nexus 10)? I mean sharing a large number of photos and movies, something without online connection (no dropbox/drive). A solution without duplicating the files in each account is highly preferred.

I know /sdcard/Android/obb folder is shared, I used it to transfer large files between the accounts. But it is not recognized by Media Scanner / Gallery. Links are not working for me (I tried both - symbolic and hard link, ln -s reports Function not implemented, ln alone Operation not permitted. Not mentioning that root shell doesn't see the content of obb (strange)). Folder sync seems not to work either (even though it states 4.2.2 is supported).

General :: Google+ Photos And FB Sharing

Dec 14, 2013

I recently switched from iOS to Android (I have a Nexus 7 2013). I don't have a ton of photos but I want something similar to iTunes that will sync my photos on my PC with my tablet. I tried many options but eventually chose to install Picasa on my PC and sync my albums to web. Great, I thought, because now all my photos appear on my tablet and aren't taking up space on it. But now I'm having issues with the Facebook app. If I go into it and try to add a photo it only shows me my camera photos. If I go into the gallery app or Google+ Photos and try to share a photo, it gives me an error. It doesn't have this problem for any other app, I can easily add photos or share to Twitter or Instagram.

General :: Screen Sharing From PC / Tablet To HDTV

Aug 6, 2013

Would like to have EASY capability and not the need for anything bulky to take the screen on a PC / Laptop / Tablet and share that onto a HDTV or Projector for group projects in an office setting. Tablet is not a must but would be nice to be able to do going forward. So the idea would be someone who show an idea from their Laptop and plug in something of a USB device or could be software based but that is not preferred option. The project then could be sent to HDTV or Projector via possible wireless casting device. Have looked into various devices but hoping for some feedback from someone who has set this type of room up. Additional notes would the HDTV or Projector would NOT be connected to any server or PC we want it to be done wireless directly from the PC / Laptop / Tablet and screen shared directly to the HDTV / Projector.
