I have a PC running Windows XP, which is connected to the internet using a wired cable modem. I then have a laptop, which I want to use to access the internet, but no wireless router.
Then I realized that my G1 (running Froyo) has WiFi, and I have the USB cable for it. So, is there any way of setting up my G1 to use the connection from the desktop PC via USB, and then broadcast it as a WiFi network? This is only intended to be a temporary solution (a few days) so I'm not going to go out and buy a wireless router or anything.

I just ordered a Lenovo S2110 Android tablet with keyboard dock. The idea was to use this 20 hour machine on road trips to do work related activities. For my job, I need to connect via VPN to get access to my work's intranet. I can do that fine in Windows on my pc or my work laptop. I was hoping to do this via Android and the Cisco AnyConnect program. Unfortunately my company doesnt have the license for Cisco AnyConnect mobile so I cannot connect directly via android.
Is it at all possible to connect and share the connection via my home pc that is connected via VPN via the internet somehow? Meaning, can I have VPN running at home and if I am away, connect through the internet and get the VPN tunnel to my android so I can connect to the work websites through the Android browser? Or access my shared network drive?
Only other option I see is using Team Viewer of Splash Desktop to connect as a remote session, but that is not preferable .

I have an AT&T Samsung Note 3 SM-N900A running Android 4.3 (baseband version N900AUCUBMJ5, kernel v3.4.0-1625098). I rooted it using Kingo, installed Tasker (with Secure Settings plugin), and created 2 profiles: one with a 'Home' location context, and one with a 'Work' location context. In the 'Location Edit' map screen for each, I set a pinned location w/ a radius of 200m. I also de-select 'GPS' (leaving only 'NET'), since I don't want GPS enabled all the time (to extend battery life). I confirm that these work when I'm actively using the phone.. the profile becomes active when I'm at the specified location (as expected). I know it's active because it's displayed in the Notification Panel (and it's also shown in green in the Tasker profiles list).
The issue I'm having is that after ~10 minutes of idle time (i.e. when the display is off and I'm not using the phone), I find that the profile is no longer active when I turn the display back on and start using the phone again. I confirmed that this *doesn't* happen after 1 minute, 2 minutes, nor 5 minutes, only > 10. I also confirmed that it happens for both profiles consistently. However, as soon as I start Tasker again from the Apps Drawer (or from Recent Apps screen), the profile is immediately activated again, and my Enter task is re-run.
I enabled the run log in Tasker prefs, but it basically shows a clean activation of the profile (with no warnings or anything that looks weird to me).
I know there's a 10-minute timeout in the Display Off Monitoring prefs, but that doesn't seem to be related to my issue. I tried reducing the All Checks Seconds from 600 to 90, rebooted the phone, and it still took ~10 minutes before the profile would become inactive after the phone being idle.

Is it possible for Android to connect to Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) via WiFi?I have set up Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on my Windows XP laptop WiFi adapter. The connection is open with WEP disabled. From a Windows Mobile 6 PDA I am able to see various WiFi routers, my laptop ICS and connect to the laptop ICS.From Android I am only able to see the various WiFi routers, but not the laptop ICS connection.Does the Windows ICS use some special Microsoft protocol that the Android WiFi adapter can not detect? Is there some other Android software or app that can connect the Windows WiFi ICS?

I own an HTC Magic and am about to go travelling around my country.
I have the 3g connection on the magic and want to know if I can share it somehow to my laptop using a wireless network or the usb data cable. I would love to be able to surf the net on my laptop using the phone as the modem!
Does anybody know if this is possible - what apps I need and how to do it!

I've written a test service to understand how android implements a service. I believe I understand the difference between Context.startService and Context.bindService. If I am not mistaken, Context.startService will tell android to keep this service running, even after the Activity that started it has ended.
While testing the service, I have come across something interesting.
My problem is that the service appears to sleep or pause for a few hours, run a short time, and then sleep for a few more hours, then run a short time, etc when the phone has become inactive. In other words, when I am doing things on the phone the service is doing what is is supposed to. But after I have finished doing things on the phone and the screen goes blank the service appears to sleep or pause. I don't know if I have implemented the service wrong or if this is how Android services work.
The test service I have written simply sets a postDelayed handler to increment++ a variable in the Runnable every minute, and then write the value of that variable and a timestamp to a file (log.txt) on the sd card. This how I know that the service appears to sleep. Because there are gaps in the timestamp that correspond to when the phone was inactive. If the service were truly active the whole time, there should be a line item in the log.txt file every minute.
From the log.txt file below you can see that over an eleven hour period there are only 36 line items with time stamps ranging from 10:27 PM through 9:23 AM. If the service was running and active the whole time there should be over 600 lines in the text file. The phone was on AC power the whole time so Android should not have tried to stop services due to power issues. The phone was not used or touched from about midnight to 9 the next morning, so there should not have been a low resource clean up.
I have spent several days looking for an answer and everything I can find seems to validate that when a service is started and not bound, it will stay running (http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/ app/Service.html). However, it appears it does not. Unless I have completely missed the ball on this.
I have included the service.java and activity.java as well as the log file.
Here is a sample log.txt
CODE:...............
Here is the service java file:

I have created an adhoc wifi connection with internet sharing enabled on windows 7 and am struggling to get my Desire to see it. Another laptop can see it as well as my ipod touch.
I have tried both WEP and WPA-2 security types (only two available) and I cannot see the wifi.
Is there anything I have to do on the phone?
Forgot to add - I am able to connect to my home wifi (bt homehub) but I am no longer at home.

I know you are required to have a data plan for a smart phone. But does that only apply to those on 2 year contracts?
I have an old D2 that my wife wants to use. She currently uses a dumb phone. She doesn't want a data plan, doesn't want the smart phone features. She just wants to use it for calling & texting.
Is there any way at all that can happen? Or does any smart phone, even older ones or unlocked ones, need a data plan?

I was trying to use my PC's LAN Shared Internet on my Samsung Galaxy S using bluetooth internet connection sharing. The settings are correctly provided on my laptop. However, Samsung Galaxy S's bluetooth doesn't seem to be able to recognize this. i.e., Galaxy S doesn't have a network profile, due to which it always connects to my Laptop for headset service. Is this a limitation of Galaxy S? Can't Galaxy S connect to bluetooth for network sharing services?

I have my Google account also setup on my wife's phone so we can share purchased apps. However, everything else is shared too. For example, even though I have sync for everything on my account turned off, my calendar still showed up on my wife's phone until I disabled it in the calendar app. Also, I can't remove my Google Talk account from her phone so my messages show up on her phone.
This is on a pair of stock Samsung Galaxy S3 phones.

Looking for possibly undeleting a few pictures I took yesterday on my Galaxy 4S smart phone.
I know the directory where I need to do the undeleting but none of the un-delete programs I have gathered will show anything that makes sense when it comes to the phone.
When i plug in the phone to my computer I get 2 directories..
Phone and Card (card is my 32gb micro sd)
The pictures I would need to try undeleting would be in the following directory: ComputerSCH-I545PhoneDCIMCamera
I cannot find a way to have any undelete program scan that portion to recover files... I have even taken out the micro sd card which did not matter ..

I currently don't have a slow smartphone but when I had my original Droid it would really slow down until I put a new or updated rom on it. Even if I rebooted it it would still be slow. I now have the Droid Bionic and it's really fast but will it someday get slow? I guess I don't understand the smartphone technology very well, yet. Is there or will there be some sort of software that you can run that will speed it back up?

Almost every day when I wake up I check my phone and 9 times out of 10 the touch screen does not work. I cannot make a call or check anything. I have to push a lot of buttons and take out the battery and generally wait a while before my expensive phone to start to work. Is there a fix for this? I've already had to go to sprit to do a hard reset because the phone got, "kicked off the network" for some reason the sprint people could not explain. Any solution for the screen issue?

I would like to know, what limitations there are for how far one can go in terms of replacing UI components of current touch screen smart phones, in particular iPhone, Blackberry and android based phones. What I would like to do is create a custom UI for dialing out and incoming calls.
I have some experience with Blackberry development. The theme builder for it, can be used to customize certain items on the incoming call screen, but it doesn't look like that you can increase the size of answer button. I know Blackberry also gives you access to all the phone APIs, but I'm not sure that you can create your own UI that can gain preference over the Blackberry incoming call screen. And if you try to customize the incoming call screen by adding any buttons to it, they would be rendered as pictures.
I could possibly design a complete UI for android, since different manufactures have different UI for android based phones. Can I do what I want to do using iPhone, Blackberry or android? Or any other phone for that matter? I am guessing may be for Nokia phones using Qt, but I prefer the 3 platforms I listed.

I'm by FAR not what you'd call a techie, and I'm totally new to the 'smart phone". I just bought a Motorola Droid. I'm still trying to figure this thing out. The one thing I'm kind of not liking is... With my old LG Dare, I used VZ Navigator for my GPS. That phone was a touch screen, but when I would use the GPS to find where I was going, I could lock the screen, and it would stay lit, and the program would continue to run. But if I bumped the screen with my finger, I wouldn't be thrown out of the program, or into another one.
I'm finding that with my new Droid (which uses Google maps) that when I'm using the GPS on that, I will occasionally bump the screen, and then I have to try to navigate my way back to the GPS. So if anyone knows of an app that allows me to keep my screen fully lit and the program working, BUT still locks the screen, could you please let me know?
