General :: 3rd-party Apps Don't See Contacts
Aug 17, 2013
I've just moved into as SG Mega. But have a problem with contacts. All my contacts have safely come down from Google and appear to all be there and fine, however my third-party apps aren't seeing them. If I start a text message in "Messaging", it reads the contacts and offers me choices. But if I do the same in "Handsent", my messaging app of choice, it does not. Likewise, "Gmail" sees the email addresses in my contacts fine, whereas my regular email app, K9, does not.

I have a Sprint HTC One. I recently flashed a new ROM. VENOM 5.0 which supports my PDA.
So, after installing it I downloaded all the required apps and they worked fine.
Later the next morning when I switched on my data connection, all the apps ran on data and everything went on well. Then I installed Root Firewall PRO and set all my required settings, after that none of the third party apps didn't receive any data connection. Neither Whatsapp nor Facebook Messenger received data. Even though they are only messaging apps, they also did not receive any Data Connection.

I've noticed something since I updated my phone to kitkat 4.4.2 (it's a Z1 compact).
Whenever I use another app than my default app to send SMS, eg. I'm using SMSPopup, Glowfly or event another "real" SMS app along with my default one (let's say hangouts or Handcent), I have duplicate sent SMS, that means I have twice my sent messages in my list. I didn't have this issue on JB.
I tried to tweak access/read/write permissions via AppOps but the result is still the same. I now have to use the same app for popups/Notifications and SMS. Other SMS apps are useless because they duplicate the text messages.

I know it's possible to uninstall messaging and music, but is it possible to replace them with like ChompSMS and Rocket Player in the system or do the third party apps use the stock apps?

The company directory is still not working in Android 2.2 at least on my EVO 4G. But the good news is that you dont need it to work. There is a better way. I kept thinking that Google was supposed to be the king of searching, so I could not accept the fact that you cannot atleast search by company name. After doing some digging I found out a way to find contacts by company name.Press the "+" sign next to "Phone" on your home screen then select "Widgets" next select "Google Search" then select "People" and place the search bar on your home screen. Now you can search your contacts by name, company, number, etc. You can select the contact and see the full contact info for that individual and dial the number from there. You can also have the search pull up related email, texts, etc. when you search for the individuals name.

About a week ago when I booted my phone everything forced closed while the desktop loaded up (phone, gps, settings, etc...) and nothing worked except third party apps (thank god.) Well I rebooted and everything worked fine after that... Fast forward to today and it started happening again except this time no matter what I did nothing would work. I even dropped the phone off with a Sprint service center (my device is a Sprint Hero) and they just ordered me a new phone because nothing they did worked. After I left Sprint I went out to eat and while eating I kept messing with my phone more and more until I admitted defeat and started backing up all my apps with Astro . Welllll apparently somewhere along the way I got this effing awesome idea to uninstall via Astro all the applications I've downloaded in the last week and freaking bam; phone works again. Here's a list of applications I deleted and I've starred the ones.

Bitartist
Minutes Widget (Miku Version)
Maya Takao
*Internal Memory Widget

*SD Card Memory Widget

S2 Calendar Widget

*Powertime Widget

The starred ones raise more flags as I downloaded them before any of the others but not knowing which did this I figured I'd put all that I uninstalled to fix my phone.

I want to back up all the free and paid apps in my Moto Droid, but can't seem to find where they're located using Astro. Are they in the phone memory? On the SD card? Regardless, I can't find any of them.

Yes, I did un-check auto-sync on setting, it works on gmail app, but not on mail app.
How can I set mail app to sync manually? I mean not notification, but actual email app. I want to check my emails when I actually open email app. I don't want mail app check my emails for me.
I did find to turn notifications off, but thats not what I want.
or are there any 3rd party apps that let me do that?

I have a few apps running which are similar to installed ones, eg K9-Mail Beta, Quick Settings and ENotify. Since they are doing similar things to the installed ones, are there certain things I must do if I have them running, ie should I be trying to turn off the installed ones?

After publishing a free app to Android Market I have received numerous solicitations from 3rd party app stores to publish my app such as handster.com and mobango.com. To date, I have not pursued that and my app is only available on Android Market.
I would love to hear some developer opinions about this: Is it better to stick to Android Market only, or does it make sense to publish your free apps in as many stores as you can? What do you think are the pros and cons to each approach?

I have 3 different google accounts on my phone, and over time my apps and contacts have been spread about all 3 of them. One of them is a work email, and I'm changing jobs soon so I need to get all the contacts/apps linked to that account to switch over to my personal account. I also am going to take my 3rd account off my phone (just trying to clean up my phone). how to bounce all these contacts and apps to be linked to just my personal gmail?
I need to wipe my phone because it's starting act buggy and freeze a lot, but I don't plan on bringing back 2 of these accounts so I want to consolidate everything first, if it's possible. If it's not possible with the apps it's not the end of the world, but REALLY want to keep all my contacts. are there any apps that can export all this information to a simple excell spreadsheet so I at least have all the info for me to put it all back in manually?

I picked up a Zeki TB782B for my kids to use and I have been really happy with it as an entertainment tablet. I have put my daughters gmail account into it and gmail works great, but contacts app does not show up anywhere including apps. It is on the tablet as a native app, Titanium is backing it up and it seems like it should be running. I rolled back the system updates to the app and still nothing.

m running avast and lookout premium and they cant find anything! ive looked through running apps and cant find anything obviously amiss. its sending messages like "do you know this hot sl*tty bird? then with some dodgy link i havent clicked on. i havent downloaded any apps recently but i surf a lot on my phone so maybe a dodgy site i went to? the messages it sends are not showing up on my phone, the people im sending them to are showing me.
i have a goodybag with texts so currently not a major problem for me, more for my contacts, but im flying to australia tomorrow so will be a MAJOR problem then. I have apps that i have had a longgg time on an email address i cant access anymore so dont want to factory reset as ill lose them forever.
i found a shortcut on my phone to an app named liiiioioo l kk Pl l.ioin l oii...im tempted to delete that but im sure thats just a shortcut right? went through manage apps and no app i have named this. Cant really do the limit privelages to apps one by one as i get no notification when they send a msg so hard to police like that.

Has used a 3rd party SMS/MMS application (ie Handcent, GoSMS, Textra, 8sms, etc etc) to use send/receive MMS over WiFi Calling WITHOUT ANY DATA? I'm in an area where I can only use WFC, and all of my 3rd party SMS apps simply will not send or receive MMS over WiFi Calling without using the stock app.
And I repeat, NO DATA, no wifi = no service, so if you have a solution, make sure it's not quietly turning on data, sending the MMS, then going back to wifi, because that's not going to work as there is no cell service in this location.

My cctv dvr comes with an android app that I can use to view cctv cameras.
The dvr is configured to send an email when it detects motion.
What I'm struggling with is trying to figure out how to launch the cctv android app when an email arrives, and then after a set time (e.g. 30secs) to stop the application or put it to sleep.
The idea is that I will have a number of android tablets on the wall in various rooms, and they will come on and off automatically when motion is detected outside.
Is it possible to achieve this? Is there an app that can look out for the email notification and then launch a 3rd party app i.e. the cctv app, and then after a preset time shut it down. (I think if the cctv app is left running in the background, the streaming is still continuing and drains battery and eats data.)
