HTC EVO 4G :: Search Contacts By Company (No 3rd Party App Needed)
Aug 3, 2010
The company directory is still not working in Android 2.2 at least on my EVO 4G. But the good news is that you dont need it to work. There is a better way. I kept thinking that Google was supposed to be the king of searching, so I could not accept the fact that you cannot atleast search by company name. After doing some digging I found out a way to find contacts by company name.Press the "+" sign next to "Phone" on your home screen then select "Widgets" next select "Google Search" then select "People" and place the search bar on your home screen. Now you can search your contacts by name, company, number, etc. You can select the contact and see the full contact info for that individual and dial the number from there. You can also have the search pull up related email, texts, etc. when you search for the individuals name.

When using the smart search function of the dialer or searching in contacts my Magic only searches numbers and names, not company names.I have hundreds of contacts that are just companies (airlines, couriers, etc. etc.) with no specific contacts at that company. Those contacts are effectively inaccessible on my phone now as the only way to find them is to scroll through the hundreds of blank contacts to find what I am looking for. When I synchronized contacts with my HTC magic, any contact with a company name, but nothing in the 'Name' field had the word 'unnamed' added to the name field. The only work around I can see is to use Outlook to manually add the company name to each of these contacts and then change the 'File As' field to read the company name.

I'm an exchange 2003 administrator and just got a captivate yesterday.
I can get email addresses out of our GAL on exchange no problem. I can't figure out how to search the company directory/GAL for phone numbers though.

I am considering buying an Andoid phone, and I have checked out the features on my wife's Hero. On such a business phone.I expect a Contacts/PIM that can organize all my business contacts by their companies. I would say that Company as a PIM entry is the most elementary feature of a PIM.Today I have a Windows phone (WM5), which has a great PIM for business contacts, with email address, business phone, switchboard phone, web address, company name, business address, private address, etc, etc.On Andoid Market I find nothing similar. It is unbelievable! All I find is a Group feature, which is something completely different. This is a show stopper for me.How can Android work for business people? Does anyone know of a PIM with full business card features?

In win for mobile is it possible to sort your contacts by company name in the same way as in Outlook. I use HTC Desire in my work and I have 1200 contacts. It is impossible to remember all names, but I remember the company name. It would be a nice feature in Android.

I have a Droid Razr, android v. 4.0.4 and I would like to view both the name and company of each contact, instead of just the name. In the contact view settings, only the "view first name" and "view last name" options are there. Is there any way to turn on the company field in the contact list?

Just downloaded donut sdk and played with global search, very cool, except a small issue. I integrate my application with global search functionality, but global search always shows "More results... xxx (n) " even if there is only 1 result from my application. I've disabled all other applications so that there is enough room for displaying the results of my application for sure. Any hint when it shows result directly and when it shows "More results..."?

I'm running 4.3 on my AT&T (not sure if that is relevant) Galaxy S3. A few weeks ago I updated it to 4.3 when I saw a message that an update was available.
I keep a lot of work contacts in the phone but over the years I've built a collection of "contacts" that have no first/last name but are simply just a "Company" field with a phone and fax number.
Before 4.3 I could use the keypad in the stock Phone app to spell out company names (e.g. I could pull up the number for "XYZ Widgets, Inc." by typing "XYZ", just like searching for a person's name).
Ever since 4.3 I've been unable to do this. I go into my contacts and they are still shown there. But they do not show up when I'm typing them out. So I have a workaround but it's cumbersome.
Any settings I can change to try to fix this? I took some screen captures of the menu options I have under "call settings" in the Phone app. Link: [URL]

At the moment I am trying to evaluate if it is possible to reuse the android contact search in a 3rd party application.
I got the problem that I have to implement a contact list/picker including a filtering possibility for the contacts list. That means that the standard android picker opened by an intent does not help me. So I decided to implement the list/picker on my own which is not that difficult. But I need to be able to offer the android search dialog in my own implementation as well.
So is it possible to reuse the standard contact search mechanism in an own application? (the contact search available e.g. in the default contact list) Or do I have to implement this one on my own?

I've just moved into as SG Mega. But have a problem with contacts. All my contacts have safely come down from Google and appear to all be there and fine, however my third-party apps aren't seeing them. If I start a text message in "Messaging", it reads the contacts and offers me choices. But if I do the same in "Handsent", my messaging app of choice, it does not. Likewise, "Gmail" sees the email addresses in my contacts fine, whereas my regular email app, K9, does not.

I was wondering if there was a way (or an contact app) that would allow for a more thorough search of the contacts. I just switched from a B-Berry and I had notes, or business names, tags or whatever with certain business contacts and I could find them by searching for that word, but this phone will not. Example a person who I could not remember his name, but he was a roofer, I could search for roof and find him.. also, the B-Berry would also pull up both peoples 1st and last names if they were the same eg a search for martin would pull up a person whose 1st name is Martin as well as anyone whose last name is Martin. I really liked this function, it was the same on an old Palm PDA that I had too...

Can anyone offer any advice on how to go back to search results in contacts? You do a search for a name and get 2 or 3 contacts with the same name, you look at one but its not the one you wanted, you want to go back to the search results to look at the other option but you can't, it takes you back to all contacts, you are left cursing that you have to re-enter cuz now you are driving. What is a girl to do?

Whenever I want to send a text message to my friend Bob, i'll type "bob" in the recipients name and no phone number will come up even though he is stored in my contacts. However, whenever i want to send a text to Jill, I simply type "Jill" in the recipients box in the SMS and her phone number pops up. In order to send a text message to Bob, i have to go into Contacts-->Search-->Send text. It's more of a nuisance than anything else and was wondering if there was a remedy for it. I have tried re-programming the contacts information into the phone but the problem still exists.

I just installed the latest DialerOne (1.2.7.1) from the Market and find that the new simultaneous search of the call log and contacts is annoying in that it places call log entries at the top of the list, and tapping on them brings up the call history for that contact instead of listing their numbers so you can choose one to dial. I don't see any way to turn this off.Am I missing something? It would seem natural to have the ability to limit the search to the screen presented (search only the call log when the call log is displayed, or search only the contacts when contacts are displayed), but I have Dialer One display the call log by default, so that I can quickly call a recently called contact, or just start dialing to search, so this wouldn't work for me either.I would much rather go back to the way it used to be. Of course, I figured I didn't need to backup the previous version because after all, what could change? Now I have this, and the coloring of the digits on the keypad is weird, even after adjusting it as much as possible.

When I go into contacts on my phone and start typing "M", it automatically starts showing up all contacts that start with "M"...but one is missing. It's a contact that I added on my phone, not on gmail on my computer. When I manually scroll down the contacts list, the contact is there. When I log into gmail on my computer, the contact is there and is listed under "My Contacts". Anyway ideas?

While in the Phone/Contacts app, I LOVE the search button to open the contacts search box. However, when I press the button, it doesn't automatically open the soft keyboard and I have to first press in the input box. Is there any way to make it automatically open the soft keyboard? It's not a major issue, but it's a slight nuisance. I'm running a rooted Droid with Froyo (FRG01B, manually updated).

When I got my Droid X, it had an app that let me search my company directory (Exchange) for numbers and email addresses. I think it was just called Company Directory or Search Company Directory.Today, I go to look for it, and the app is gone. I'm pretty sure I didn't manually uninstall it. Did it go away with Froyo for some reason (not sure if I used it since the OTA update)?UPDATE: Turns out, Corporate Directory doesn't exist as a separate app anymore, but the functionality is still there. Just go to Contacts and then hit the search button. Type in the name you're looking for, and after entering at least three characters, you'll see the option to search your company directory below all your phone contacts.
Good job, Google, on taking something as simple and easy to use as the Corporate Directory app and hiding it's functionality deep within the bowels of the phone in a place almost impossible to find.I knew I could search my company directory with Eclair because there was an app for that right there on the phone. If I didn't know it must be possible somehow I wouldn't have scoured the internet for the answer, and probably would never have known the functionality existed. Why must you hide big stuff like this, Google? Oh, why?

I have an HTC Incredible - all set up for the past two weeks without any issues with Microsoft Exchange and company email. All of a sudden, nothing is working. My yahoo account works - I can send and receive with out a problem. I just can't receive. I can send email from the droid (company email) back to my Microsoft Exchange account without any issues. Something isn't in sync. I have tried pulling the battery and trying to resync.
