There are currently push notifications available for iPhones, Palm Pre and Blackberries each provided by their respective manufacturer. However I have heard nothing for Androids (probably because google does not actually sell the phones themselves.

I installed today from Market, the Yahoo Mail application and I was reading it offers push message notification technique. Indeed it works, as I got exactly the same moment the alert on my desktop computer and my mobile mail client. How is it accomplished?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to edit the hosts file to access rest services in my local network. Using adb pull I am able to get the hosts file for the emulator and edit it. However I get the error "No space left on device" when I do an adb push.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Can we increase the space for /system? If so how? Are there any other easier ways to access local area network (without creating a DNS server).
I finaly have app to as working on the custom rom but certain apps were not moved after I flashed does anyone know the root commands to push apps from the system to the sd ?

I know how to send notifications to the status bar, but what I want is to show only an icon at the right, like the WIFI icon when WIFI is on, the antenna icon when "GoogleMaps" is on, etc. My service will send notifications to the status bar when needed, but also I want the user to know that the service is running placing an icon at the right. The one thing I miss on my Blackberry was the IM+ program. I could set it so that I could receive IM's via email (which come's in handy when working in a hospital and the signal goes out at times).

Meaning, first the server finds out which devices are connected to the server and then sends an application specific message to the client device which should wake certain functionality present on the client, like for example send out its current location.
I was looking into XMPP service which looked promising since it works as a PUSH notification. The <presence> in XMPP can be used to check if the device is currently connected and has subscribed to the server. Since every android user has a gmail account, I was thinking of using the gmail xmpp service to connect /subscribe to the server. Then send specific message to the client, i.e x...@gmail.com. But if a message is sent this way the client app gets the message as well as the native gtalk client. So how do I go about intercepting this so that it doesn't show up on the gtalk client but my app still gets it.

What I need is to have some communication between android phones, one to one, and I thought that sending SMS messages would solve the problem, but the SMS notification are not needed for that, maybe the WAP PUSH messages would better for that but I have no idea how to send them from android phone.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy husband and i just got Droid X's. We have a business with a website and associated webmail. Our email address is an IMAP account created by our website developer. After trying to configure the embedded mail program, we installed K9 based on a lot of good reviews on this site. We've got it working, the only issue is we can't seem to get it to automatically notify us when a new email comes in as the phone does with Gmail. The notification doesn't come in at all - you have to go into K9 and "Get Mail". We have it set to sync all folders.

Originally, a week or so ago, i was receiving the Push Notifications. Now it is NOT sending a notification, on either v1.0.3 or v1.0.4. And yes, the Push Notification is check marked.
I have 2 friends that have the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S model and are getting their notification when i play a word against them. One has v1.0.3 and the other v1.0.4.
Does the Push notification only work for Gmail and Facebook? Will it not work for the email app? Or is there a way to get it to work for all your apps?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have developed a small android application and then installed the app using ADB and uploaded the same app with a higher version number (not the string value, but the integer field) to Android market place. I get no notification saying there is an update available for my app. Under Market -> My Downloads tab in Market, the app does not show as installed. When browsing the Market, the app shows as installed but does not say "update available". When I browse to the application and touch install, however, I do receive an "overwrite previous version" warning. Steps i followed: I compiled the APK as unsigned and then created the Private key and singed the app. Then installed the app on my device using ADB. Changed the VersionCode on Manifest file with higher version and then re-compiled the code. Singed the new version of APK and then published the same on Android Market. I waited for more than 12 hours but never get the notification on checking Market->My Downloads. It would be great if some one has tried the similar things, then plz do guide me.

I am coming from a Pre, which had a very nice notification system. The new email notification would show the sender, subject, and number of new emails. You could then click to either go to the mailbox, or directly to the latest new email shown at your discretion.
I have set up both GMail through the GMail app, and an Exchange server through the Mail app, but the only notification I get is "New email" without specifics. Also, clicking won't bring me directly to the new email, but to the Inbox.
I'm setting up my new desire, and gmail works just fine, but the push email or email notification perhaps rather, is acting kind of irrational.
First when I set it up it would go off at about the same time as my email checker on my computer using imap idle. On the second email arriving though there is no more notification from the desire phone, this may be a feature although a weird one. Now I go into the inbox on the desire and delete the 2 emails in question and exit. The next time an email arrives the phone will react but not nearly as fast, it can be minutes or even more.
I'm a iPhone user switching over to the Incredible. Does the software allow instant push email notification with yahoo mail? I know it does for Gmail. I have Yahoo Plus ~ so that may help.Also, within the Mail application how many accounts can you have?

This is provided in the form of push notifications, a bespoke protocol which keeps an always on data connection to the iPhone and messages binary packets to the app, which pops up alerts incredibly quickly, between 0.5 - 5 seconds from server app send to phone app response time. This is sent as data - rather than SMS - in very very small packets charged as part of the data plan not as incoming messages. I would like to know if using Android there is either a similar facility, or whether it's possible to implement something close to this using Android APIs. To clarify I define similar as: Not an SMS message, but some data driven solution As real time as is possible Is scalable - ie: as the server part of a mobile app, I could notify thousands of app instances in seconds I appreciate the app could be pull based, HTTP request/response style, but ideally I don't want to to be polling that heavily just to check for notification .. besides which it's like drip draining the data plan.
