Android :: XMPP Service - Jabber - Push Notification
Apr 21, 2010
I am currently working on a project which requires a server to request data from the devices which are currently connected to the server. Meaning, first the server finds out which devices are connected to the server and then sends an application specific message to the client device which should wake certain functionality present on the client, like for example send out its current location.
I was looking into XMPP service which looked promising since it works as a PUSH notification. The <presence> in XMPP can be used to check if the device is currently connected and has subscribed to the server. Since every android user has a gmail account, I was thinking of using the gmail xmpp service to connect /subscribe to the server. Then send specific message to the client, i.e x...@gmail.com. But if a message is sent this way the client app gets the message as well as the native gtalk client. So how do I go about intercepting this so that it doesn't show up on the gtalk client but my app still gets it.

Well with facebook finally announcing support for 3rd party access to the facebook chat protocol (either by XMPP or Jabber) I was trying to see anyone had a good program that let you talk on skype (for IM purposes) and facebook chat (via jabber or XMPP)? I've tried using nimbuzz, Meebo, and IM+ all that didn't seem to work flawlessly -- I know AIM just updated with facebook chat, but kinda hoping for a one program solution.

I need a chat program that supports XMPP and Jabber, plus it needs to support 'group chat', that seems to be the kicker. When I was on WM platform the only one I found was Octrotalk, but they only support WM.

I know there had been a buzz around push messaging. my client has a chat application that allows chat/collaboration on desktops on which i use AJAX. We are using PHP for this on server end.
What i have to develop a client for android. here i have to develop a system using Push Technology, since it is not expected when the next message come.
I cannot use polling (at specified time) since this will cause battery lag.

Was just curious if there were any multi IM clients (meaning, ones that have AOL, Yahoo, Facebook, MSN etc all in one) that had push notifications? The one thing I miss on my Blackberry was the IM+ program. I could set it so that I could receive IM's via email (which come's in handy when working in a hospital and the signal goes out at times).
So whenever someone messaged me, I would get it in my email when I had a signal and respond back via email. Is there anything like this out there for me on my HTC Hero Firmware 1.5? I currently use the free eBUDDY program and have slightly tried out the free IM+ and Palringo. But I am not having any luck with finding one that has the push notification.

There are currently push notifications available for iPhones, Palm Pre and Blackberries each provided by their respective manufacturer. However I have heard nothing for Androids (probably because google does not actually sell the phones themselves.

Is there a way to intercept an SMS with BroadcastReceiver as for example here but without showing any notifications to the user and immediately deleting the message that contains for example some keyword
What I need is to have some communication between android phones, one to one, and I thought that sending SMS messages would solve the problem, but the SMS notification are not needed for that, maybe the WAP PUSH messages would better for that but I have no idea how to send them from android phone.

My husband and i just got Droid X's. We have a business with a website and associated webmail. Our email address is an IMAP account created by our website developer. After trying to configure the embedded mail program, we installed K9 based on a lot of good reviews on this site. We've got it working, the only issue is we can't seem to get it to automatically notify us when a new email comes in as the phone does with Gmail. The notification doesn't come in at all - you have to go into K9 and "Get Mail". We have it set to sync all folders.

I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 as my MAIN email and calendaring software. I will be accessing my mail and calendar via Outlook on my office PC for the vast majority of time.
My main email accounts are currently configured as POP3 but are also configured to leave copies of messages on the server for 30 days, which allows me to check new messages via my ISPs webmail when out of the office.
I have considered changing to IMAP for my main email account but have purposely avoided it up to now as I have a huge number of mail folders and messages my Outlook pst file is currently 7.2GB. A lot of those are for archive reference and I dont need to see them on other devices BUT, as I understand it, IMAP does not let me only select certain folders to mirror and sync between different devices (it must sync all of them) so I feel it would be unwieldy to use IMAP on my account. (If anyone knows of a way to set IMAP to only include specific folders please let me know!).
I do have a Google Mail account already, but rarely use it its just there as a back-up account. Ive NOT as yet imported my Outlook contacts or calendar into my Google account.
Now I know that I can use HTC Sync to sync up my Contacts and Calendar, but what Ive read suggests that the phone works best when you sync it with your Google account. I COULD of course import my Outlook Contacts and Calendar into my Google account, and I COULD also use my Gmail account to check mail from my main POP3 accounts. However, Im unsure about going down that route as Im worried that might confuse things, cause conflicts, or cause double-work for me when I update my contacts or calendar from Outlook or from Google. Are there possible problems with going down that route?
Secondly, Im very intrigued to have read that Gmail is more efficient for the phone as Ive read it works as a push email service. That is, I dont need to check my mail by doing a send/receive from my phone either manually or automatically at set intervals, but that Gmail will just automatically PUSH new emails to my phone as soon as they arrive. Is that correct?
If it is correct it sounds good, but does that mean my phone must be or will be permanently connected to the net? As I dont use my mobile that much Im on a Pay-As You-Go service so need to ensure my phone is ONLY connecting to a data connection when I need it to. Will I be able to work-around this?
I know HTC Sync doesn't transfer Outlook Notes or Tasks. Has anyone found, or can recommend, an app that will do that for me?

I have the Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S), on T-Mobile. I just downloaded the 1.0.4 version for Wordfeud on 8/25. Originally, a week or so ago, i was receiving the Push Notifications. Now it is NOT sending a notification, on either v1.0.3 or v1.0.4. And yes, the Push Notification is check marked.
I have 2 friends that have the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S model and are getting their notification when i play a word against them. One has v1.0.3 and the other v1.0.4.

Is there any way to enable the notification bar to display the email header (sender, subject, date/time) of the latest email received, as well as the number of new emails in the notification tray?
I am coming from a Pre, which had a very nice notification system. The new email notification would show the sender, subject, and number of new emails. You could then click to either go to the mailbox, or directly to the latest new email shown at your discretion.
I have set up both GMail through the GMail app, and an Exchange server through the Mail app, but the only notification I get is "New email" without specifics. Also, clicking won't bring me directly to the new email, but to the Inbox.

I'm setting up my new desire, and gmail works just fine, but the push email or email notification perhaps rather, is acting kind of irrational.
First when I set it up it would go off at about the same time as my email checker on my computer using imap idle. On the second email arriving though there is no more notification from the desire phone, this may be a feature although a weird one. Now I go into the inbox on the desire and delete the 2 emails in question and exit. The next time an email arrives the phone will react but not nearly as fast, it can be minutes or even more.

I recently learned about the ability of iPhone apps to receive nearly instantaneous notifications to apps. This is provided in the form of push notifications, a bespoke protocol which keeps an always on data connection to the iPhone and messages binary packets to the app, which pops up alerts incredibly quickly, between 0.5 - 5 seconds from server app send to phone app response time. This is sent as data - rather than SMS - in very very small packets charged as part of the data plan not as incoming messages. I would like to know if using Android there is either a similar facility, or whether it's possible to implement something close to this using Android APIs. To clarify I define similar as: Not an SMS message, but some data driven solution As real time as is possible Is scalable - ie: as the server part of a mobile app, I could notify thousands of app instances in seconds I appreciate the app could be pull based, HTTP request/response style, but ideally I don't want to to be polling that heavily just to check for notification .. besides which it's like drip draining the data plan.

I have a service running, and would like to send a notification. Too bad, the notification object requires a context, like an Activity, and not a service.
Do you know any way to by pass that ? I tried to create an Activity for each notification bu it seems ugly, and I can't find a way to launch an Activity without any view.

The application I'm working on is a service which runs in the background in android. The problem is that I need to determine the height of the notification bar for some functionality of the service.
I found a number of solutions for this, for regular activities - a view inside an activity can determine its own height without the notification bar, based on checking its actual view size from its onSizeChanged event, after it is already drawn. However, this is not applicable to a service which has no physical view drawn.
I would really appreciate any ideas on getting the size of the notification bar at a system level, perhaps?
