Android :: Any Multi IM Clients With Push Notification?
Oct 8, 2010
Was just curious if there were any multi IM clients (meaning, ones that have AOL, Yahoo, Facebook, MSN etc all in one) that had push notifications? The one thing I miss on my Blackberry was the IM+ program. I could set it so that I could receive IM's via email (which come's in handy when working in a hospital and the signal goes out at times).
So whenever someone messaged me, I would get it in my email when I had a signal and respond back via email. Is there anything like this out there for me on my HTC Hero Firmware 1.5? I currently use the free eBUDDY program and have slightly tried out the free IM+ and Palringo. But I am not having any luck with finding one that has the push notification.

So I have the Droid X but I noticed that the Droid 2 now has a themed version of Swype to fit in with the rest of the UI. I like it a lot.
My question is this. When you push the voice-to-text button does it pop up a window like earlier versions of Swype or does it do the really fast and slick thing that the multi touch keyboard does (just replace the keyboard with the audio waveform thing).

Apparently my T-Mobile G2 (HTC Hero) multi-tasks. Why is it then, that I might be playing a game (say Puzzle Attack) and I get a new email notification. I slide down the notification bar, click the email notification, read the notification, go back to Puzzle Attack and it takes me to the main menu. This happens on, I think, every single game I have played. Is there something that the app developers can do to force the app to close instead of simply going to the background? Is it *really* multi-tasking?

I know there had been a buzz around push messaging. my client has a chat application that allows chat/collaboration on desktops on which i use AJAX. We are using PHP for this on server end.
What i have to develop a client for android. here i have to develop a system using Push Technology, since it is not expected when the next message come.
I cannot use polling (at specified time) since this will cause battery lag.

There are currently push notifications available for iPhones, Palm Pre and Blackberries each provided by their respective manufacturer. However I have heard nothing for Androids (probably because google does not actually sell the phones themselves.

I am currently working on a project which requires a server to request data from the devices which are currently connected to the server. Meaning, first the server finds out which devices are connected to the server and then sends an application specific message to the client device which should wake certain functionality present on the client, like for example send out its current location.
I was looking into XMPP service which looked promising since it works as a PUSH notification. The <presence> in XMPP can be used to check if the device is currently connected and has subscribed to the server. Since every android user has a gmail account, I was thinking of using the gmail xmpp service to connect /subscribe to the server. Then send specific message to the client, i.e x...@gmail.com. But if a message is sent this way the client app gets the message as well as the native gtalk client. So how do I go about intercepting this so that it doesn't show up on the gtalk client but my app still gets it.

Is there a way to intercept an SMS with BroadcastReceiver as for example here but without showing any notifications to the user and immediately deleting the message that contains for example some keyword
What I need is to have some communication between android phones, one to one, and I thought that sending SMS messages would solve the problem, but the SMS notification are not needed for that, maybe the WAP PUSH messages would better for that but I have no idea how to send them from android phone.

My husband and i just got Droid X's. We have a business with a website and associated webmail. Our email address is an IMAP account created by our website developer. After trying to configure the embedded mail program, we installed K9 based on a lot of good reviews on this site. We've got it working, the only issue is we can't seem to get it to automatically notify us when a new email comes in as the phone does with Gmail. The notification doesn't come in at all - you have to go into K9 and "Get Mail". We have it set to sync all folders.

I have the Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S), on T-Mobile. I just downloaded the 1.0.4 version for Wordfeud on 8/25. Originally, a week or so ago, i was receiving the Push Notifications. Now it is NOT sending a notification, on either v1.0.3 or v1.0.4. And yes, the Push Notification is check marked.
I have 2 friends that have the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S model and are getting their notification when i play a word against them. One has v1.0.3 and the other v1.0.4.

Is there any way to enable the notification bar to display the email header (sender, subject, date/time) of the latest email received, as well as the number of new emails in the notification tray?
I am coming from a Pre, which had a very nice notification system. The new email notification would show the sender, subject, and number of new emails. You could then click to either go to the mailbox, or directly to the latest new email shown at your discretion.
I have set up both GMail through the GMail app, and an Exchange server through the Mail app, but the only notification I get is "New email" without specifics. Also, clicking won't bring me directly to the new email, but to the Inbox.

I'm setting up my new desire, and gmail works just fine, but the push email or email notification perhaps rather, is acting kind of irrational.
First when I set it up it would go off at about the same time as my email checker on my computer using imap idle. On the second email arriving though there is no more notification from the desire phone, this may be a feature although a weird one. Now I go into the inbox on the desire and delete the 2 emails in question and exit. The next time an email arrives the phone will react but not nearly as fast, it can be minutes or even more.

I recently learned about the ability of iPhone apps to receive nearly instantaneous notifications to apps. This is provided in the form of push notifications, a bespoke protocol which keeps an always on data connection to the iPhone and messages binary packets to the app, which pops up alerts incredibly quickly, between 0.5 - 5 seconds from server app send to phone app response time. This is sent as data - rather than SMS - in very very small packets charged as part of the data plan not as incoming messages. I would like to know if using Android there is either a similar facility, or whether it's possible to implement something close to this using Android APIs. To clarify I define similar as: Not an SMS message, but some data driven solution As real time as is possible Is scalable - ie: as the server part of a mobile app, I could notify thousands of app instances in seconds I appreciate the app could be pull based, HTTP request/response style, but ideally I don't want to to be polling that heavily just to check for notification .. besides which it's like drip draining the data plan.

I am using WCF to write a server that should be able to communicate with .Net clients, Android clients and possibly other types of clients. The main type of client is a desktop application that will be written in .Net. This client will usually be on the same intranet as the server. It will make an initial call to the server to get the current state of the system and will then receive updates from the server whenever a value changes. These updates are frequent, perhaps once a second. The Android clients will connect over the Internet. This client is also interested in updates, but it is not as critical as for the desktop client so a (less frequent) polling scenario might be acceptable.
All clients will have to login to use the services, and when connecting over the Internet the connection should be secure. I am familiar with WCF but I am not sure what bindings are most appropriate for the scenario and what security solution to use. Also, I have not used Android, but I would like to make it as simple as possible for the person implementing the Android client to consume my services. So, what is my strategy?

I'm using the EMail Client "Eudora" on my computer to retrieve messages on a POP3 Server. I don't understand if there is a way to retrieve the same messages from the POP3 Server on my mobile phone. The phone is running Android OS 2.1. I manually added all the information into the native E-Mail application on my phone, and it works fine for a couple hours then stops for a few hours, and then it works fine again, but then stops working again for a few hours, and so on and so on.
In addition, I received messages from 8:07AM to 10:39AM, then received no messages between 10:40AM to 1:42PM. At 1:42PM I started receiving messages again; the weird thing is I only received messages after 1:42PM, I can't retrieve the messages from the gap between 10:40AM and 1:42PM. And yes I'm sure I received messages during that time. I can't figure out any correlation between what I'm doing with the phone, and when the phone receives emails.So, my question - Is there a way to view messages from a POP3 server on my Android OS 2.1 phone using any E-Mail client?

Let's get real here. There are tons of threads that cover email on the droid. But Seriously, What are some good apps that support OWA <-- Emoze is the only one I can find so far, however it is not supported on droid at this time. This should be a very basic piece of software.
- connect to a https:// site - you may need to install a security certificate?
- logon with username and password
- send / receive mail

I've created a java server and an android client (A), the client(A) gets it's GPS coordinates and sends them to the server, I need the server to send them to client(B). I'm not entirely sure as to what to do, whether I should have separate ports etc or what.
Below is my two clients and server
SERVER
[HIGH]import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.DataInputStream;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStream;
import java.io.InputStreamReader;
import java.io.OutputStream;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.net.ServerSocket;
import java.net.Socket;
import java.util.Scanner;
[code].....
With this, I run the server, then run CLIENT B in the emulator and CLIENT A on the device, once I run CLIENT A, CLIENT B force shuts.
CLIENT A / SERVER connectivity is 100%, it prints to console (for testing). What I need to try to find out is how do I send the data to CLIENT B, I have used different ports and i'm sure that's why CLIENT B force shuts.

I'm looking at 3 different apps to develop for the Android, but I'm new to the platform (come over from Blackberry - yuck!).
Anyhow - I need to know if there is some way to push data to the phone from a server. I'd prefer to avoid using SMS to push (user charges), or constantly polling the server (lets see, every 5 seconds = 12 times a minute, 720 times an hour, over 17000 a day)

I am using vpnc on my computer to connect on my university VPN. Once again, the configuration is not straightforward, but, mainly, I use IPSec, I have an ID for the VPN, a gateway URL, a secret word, IKE Authmode of PSK, IKE DH Group, Xauth username, Xauth password, I need to enable Single DES, and I have two 'target networks'.
The fact is that Android (2.1)'s built-in VPN does not ask me all these info. It keeps asking for a pre-shared key (this is evidently the contrary of the certificate method), but I do not have such a pre-shared key. Connecting (to the VPN) through my computer works perfectly. What can I do to make Android compatible with the VPN?
