Android :: High Resolution (pixels) Devices

Sep 7, 2010

I want to publish an application that specifically runs only on 800x480 or higher screens. I don't want users with 480x320, 320x240 etc devices to get it from Android Market. How do I configure it? Market Filters seems to have the answer but I still don't get it.

Android :: Get Screen Resolution / Pixels As Integer Values

May 25, 2010

How can I quickly access the screen resolution (width, height) as integer values? I've tried this one, but it always shows zero on my emulator:

DisplayMetrics dm = new DisplayMetrics();
int width = dm.widthPixels / 2;

In my case I want to dynamically create a table with tableRows, each containing two cols. This cols all shall fill half of the screen in width.

Android :: Disadvantage To Using High Resolution Image Resources For Application?

Mar 9, 2010

The Android documentation says that best practices are to make two drawable directories - one for HDPI and one for MDPI. It also says that if the MDPI directory doesn't exist and a MDPI device is running the app, it will scale down the HDPI ones so everything looks good. Is there any reason not to just make one high resolution set of graphics? One con that I can think of is performance issues and one pro I can think of is only having one set of images for your app.

Android :: New High Resolution Icon Field In The Market Console

Nov 17, 2010

I have noticed that there's a new high-res icon field in the market console. Does anyone know what that's for? I have tested this new field, and I can tell for sure that it was ignored when rendering the android market icon. Maybe that it will get used after a market upgrade... Furthermore, I have had problems with the market icon. After various tests, I have realized that it is always the mdpi icon, scaled to some random size (51px, etc..), even if there's a hdpi icon, and whatever device I used. But I see some icons which seem to be pixel-sharp. Is this just an illusion or is there a trick?

Android :: Gradient Banding On High DPI Devices

Nov 2, 2009

I've been looking at some issues with the background of our application, particularly on high-density devices (240 dpi, 480x854). I managed to eliminate banding on existing devices (i.e. G1/G2, 160 dpi) by applying the android:dither="true" attribute to our nine-patch image, which is a 1x480px PNG with no noise added. Looks great. However, if I use the same image on a higher resolution device, the banding is pretty nasty looking. Same happens regardless of whether I use a shape+gradient, a noisy nine-patch PNG, or an android:dithered nine-patch PNG -- even if I create an 854px-tall image. Is the use of gradients going to become a problem on high screen density devices, purely because of the display colour depth, or is there any way to solve this?

Motorola Droid 2 :: High Resolution Screen - Dropping Battery Time

Aug 14, 2010

I am a new android user, and got my Droid 2 the morning they came out at the Verizon store. Now the guy that was helping me at the store told me that the battery life would be bad because of the high resolution screen but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I have been having really bad battery issues and I don't even use it constantly. I have it on around 20% brightness during the day, and I really only send text messages, and some web browsing but not a huge amount. My battery will be drained after 6 hours or so, and will need a charge again. When checking on battery manager it does say that most of my energy is going to my screen, but like I said I don't even have it close to the full brightness. I have been using an app killer program to try to maintain that also, but I did read somewhere that it can actually hurt your battery more, from closing and opening apps. Just wanted to hear some feedback from other users since we a couple days after launch. Everything else has been great with this phone, and I am REALLY enjoying the android OS after switching from a Blackberry.

General :: Contact Pic Resolution JB / ICS - Conflict 2 Devices And 1 Google Account

Sep 12, 2012

I've got a smartphone running Jelly Bean. As I like the gmail contact photos very much, I was happy that one new feature of Jelly Bean is the fact that the contact photos are synced with Google servers in hi-res (720x720). I spent a good deal of time replacing the awful downsized pictures with new hi-res pictures. They sync in 720px, everything fine, so far.

Where my problem begins: Within the next days I expect the arrival of my new tablet. It's a low budget one (Arnova 10b G3) which runs Ice Cream Sandwich and which maybe won't ever get a Jelly Bean firmware.

I'm in a conflict now: On the one hand, I'd like to use the tablet with my Google account and not create a dummy account or something like that. This would spoil much of the usability of the account. On the other hand, I don't want to destroy my hi-res contact pics because one Google sync under ICS would downsize them forever and I guess they would again sync downsized to my Jelly Bean phone.

Is there maybe a hack that prevents Google from syncing the contact pictures? In this case, I could use the Google account on the ICS tablet just without contact pics. The downsized pics are rubbish anyways if one's display has a proper resolution.

Or, can one prevent Google from syncing the contacts after setting up the account? I know that the contact sync can be unchecked in the settings but as far as I know, that doesn't prevent the initial sync.

Android : How To Support Devices With Normal Screen - High Density Or Low Density?

Nov 15, 2010

I read the official document about supporting multiple screens http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html

According to that document, I should just create different directories for different resolultion.

Now the question. How to support devices with normal screen and high density or low density?

I ask it because, there are two posibilities (WVGA800 (480x800) and WVGA854 (480x854)) and (WQVGA400 (240x400) and WQVGA432 (240x432)) and I don't know where to store some background images for them.

I would take drawable-normal-hdpi or drawable-normal-ldpi, but how to make difference between 480x800 and 480x854 or between 240x400 and 240x432?!

Android :: Using TargetSdkVersion? Should Support Full Resolution And Not Emulate A Lower Resolution Screen

Jun 26, 2010

I have a program that should work on Android 1.5, but when it's run on newer devices with higher resolution screens, it should support the full resolution and not emulate a lower resolution screen. As far as I can tell from the documentation, this should be simple.

I just specify

code:.........

The problem is that if I tell Eclipse to compile for 1.5, it refuses to accept this. It reports an error (targetSdkVersion is an unknown tag) and refuses to compile or run. If I tell it to compile for 1.6 it works fine, of course. But if I then try to install on a 1.5 AVD, the program immediately crashes with a java.lang.VerifyError. I'm clearly missing something simple. How do I get it to compile an apk that works under 1.5, but still includes the targetSdkVersion tag?

HTC EVO 4G :: Earpiece Speaker Buzz On High/1 Down From High

Jun 12, 2010

My speaker buzzes all the time on my phone (not the speaker phone - it works fine). It's not a network buzz, it's a vibration buzz of the metal or speaker. The center camera is also off-center a little bit, which makes me think something up there is off-center, misglued or loose.

We have two other evos and neither of them buzz on the same call. I called the Sprint Nav Voice Address thing from all 3 phones since that would be the exact same voice and words every time. Only mine buzzes. The other two don't have the camera problem either.

Android : Using Bitmap Data To Copy Pixels To A New One

Jan 29, 2010

In ActionScript development, there are two classes, Bitmap, and BitmapData. Bitmap uses information from BitmapData to create a Bitmap. Is there an equivalent to BitmapData in the android API? I did some digging and BitmapFactory seems to be the closest, however, I'm facing problems with it.

I tried Bitmap bitmap = BitmapFactory.decode Resource(getResources(), R.drawable.buster);

As that was what I was seeing in most of the examples I came across, but it is telling me that the method getResources is undefined. I'm not really sure what is causing this as in another tutorial I did, getResources didn't cause any problems.

I'm not looking to simply draw a bitmap to the screen, I want to copy a section of the bitmap and place it on a new bitmap. In ActionScript, the method is bitmapData.copyPixels(), and I'm looking for a similar method in the Android API. The closest thing I could find was copyPixelsToBuffer(), but I'm not really sure if that does what I think it does.

Android :: In Opengl - Relation Between Pixels And Gl.gltranslatef - Floatx,y,z?

Sep 25, 2010

I am trying to learn opengl stuff on Android. In the gl.gltranslatef(x,y,z) call, I am shifting my texture by some units in the +ve x direction. But I am unable to find the number of pixels does 1 unit of x belong to?

Here is what I am doing:
I call gl.glviewport(0,0,width,height); // This will set my rectangle with 0,0 as lowerleft corner and then extend it to accommodate width and height.

Then
I call to gl.glfrustrum(-5,5,-7,7,3,7); // I am little confused how this call is using the dimensions I set in gl.glviewport.

How will -5 to 5 units from left to right in the above call, translate to pixels on the screen of android?

I mean if width = 320 and height = 533 pixels, then what will be the number of pixels occupied on the screen due to the gl.glfrustrum call?

I am experimenting in the gl.gltranslatef call by specifying xshift as 5.0, but it does not translate the bitmap at the right or left corner of the screen, when I increase it to 6, part of it is still visible on the screen.

I am searching for the maximum number of units (in terms of X) which will represent extreme corners of my android phone screen.
