General :: Contact Pic Resolution JB / ICS - Conflict 2 Devices And 1 Google Account
Sep 12, 2012
I've got a smartphone running Jelly Bean. As I like the gmail contact photos very much, I was happy that one new feature of Jelly Bean is the fact that the contact photos are synced with Google servers in hi-res (720x720). I spent a good deal of time replacing the awful downsized pictures with new hi-res pictures. They sync in 720px, everything fine, so far.
Where my problem begins: Within the next days I expect the arrival of my new tablet. It's a low budget one (Arnova 10b G3) which runs Ice Cream Sandwich and which maybe won't ever get a Jelly Bean firmware.
I'm in a conflict now: On the one hand, I'd like to use the tablet with my Google account and not create a dummy account or something like that. This would spoil much of the usability of the account. On the other hand, I don't want to destroy my hi-res contact pics because one Google sync under ICS would downsize them forever and I guess they would again sync downsized to my Jelly Bean phone.
Is there maybe a hack that prevents Google from syncing the contact pictures? In this case, I could use the Google account on the ICS tablet just without contact pics. The downsized pics are rubbish anyways if one's display has a proper resolution.
Or, can one prevent Google from syncing the contacts after setting up the account? I know that the contact sync can be unchecked in the settings but as far as I know, that doesn't prevent the initial sync.

I was looking through my google account and noticed it has listed every android device we have ever had, including a duplicate Transformer entry (We returned one b.c of light bleed)
Is there any way to remove the devices from the list that we no longer own or are active?

I have several older Android devices that I used to use Google+'s Location Reporting feature to keep track of family. A couple of my family members got new phones and I passed on my previous phone back to them. The problem is, I can't seem to get the automatic location reporting (which used to be Latitude, later replaced by Google+'s system).
I think it might have something to do with my old device being connected to my Google Account (and not theirs), though the phones were factory reset and had new account linked to them. I can't seem to remove the android devices from my account (when I install new apps from the online play store, my old devices still show in the drop-down menu).
Is there a way to remove my old devices from my account in hope to get location reporting to function?

Having flashed multiple Android devices other the years, I'm now having a problem since the 4.0.4 Galaxy Nexus update: I can't use Google Music anymore. I have apparently reached the "device limit" of synced devices.
Browsing Google Groups, a small number of people are apparently in my case, and none of us ever found a way to un-sync "old devices" from our accounts.

Happy droid user on Nexus One. Thinking about playing around with one of those cheap android tablets. If I logon to that tablet with my google account, will it mess up my N1 and existing account/settings? Also what happens with my apps? can I download the ones I've paid for again (onto the new device)? etc.

I realize that the Incredible will bring in your Gmail contacts during phone setup so I have all of them currently organized in Gmail as Last Name First Name in the single Name field as Gmail currently doesn't have two separate fields for first and last name. Does the phone itself have fields for first and last name and if so does it make more sense to reorganize my Gmail contacts so the phone can recognize what is the first name and what is the last name?

I was listening to Pandora and decided to open up Google maps (In the car). And I noticed that in Gmaps it wouldn't give me an accurate reading and by accurate meaning when it says "accurate to 3 meters". It would say "accurate to 1000 meters" or to 1200 w/e. So i closed Pandora and opened Gmaps and right away it gave me an accurate reading of 3 meters.
So I believe you cant run Gmaps accurately if you're listening to music on Pandora? Or is it just my phone? Try this and let me know what u get.

I want to publish an application that specifically runs only on 800x480 or higher screens. I don't want users with 480x320, 320x240 etc devices to get it from Android Market. How do I configure it? Market Filters seems to have the answer but I still don't get it.

I have two gmail accounts, each with their own Google Voice account. Account 1 is my primary account, and I have even ported my phone number to this account. I'm using this account on my phone (nexus 5), and have 0 issues with this account. All texts, voicemails, etc come through with no issues. Account 2 is largely not used. I would like to use account 2 on my nexus 7, for texts, and maybe making calls if I don't want to give out my real number to someone.
My issue is when I'm logged in to account 2 on my nexus 7, I'm getting text notifications for account 1 on my nexus 7. But if I were to open Google Voice on the nexus 7, once GV refreshes, the texts disappear. It doesn't happen the other way around. If I get a text/vm to account 2, it does not notify my phone, which is logged in to account 1.
I've checked the settings in both GV accounts, and neither account is linked to the other, or to send copies of texts/vm notifications to the other. How do I stop notifications from GV account 1 to stop displaying on account 2? I have cleared cache, data, uninstalled the app. The only thing i have not done, is a reset of the nexus 7.
I was initially logged in to account 1 on my nexus 7, but I would have thought removing the app from the device would have essentially erased all traces of the account 1 on the nexus 7. I even signed out of hangouts, to make sure Google was not treating this like my phone, and sending it both places.

I believe I have "stumbled" onto a possible solution to compressed/panelized contact images. I have owned the Hero, Droid and now the EVO. I have tried everything imaginable through exchange and gmail accounts by sending, receiving and downloading images to contacts with no luck....until today!!
I first start with an email with a photo attached from a computer and sent to my gmail account on my EVO. I click the download button the image downloads and then the image comes up on the screen after it completes the fetch of the attachment. Now with that image on the screen click the phone's menu button to share this image via text message as a mms to yourself. I use the Handcent app from the Market and when that image is RECEIVED press and hold on the image to copy it to the SD card. Now you should be able to see two thumbnails of this image in the gallery and the RECEIVED mms image that was saved to the SD card will be noticeably sharper. The lower res one is the first one from the first download from the gmail email. Your mms should show two images the one you SENT and the one you RECEIVED. You need to use the RECEIVED image. For some reason this one is not affected and compressed. The SENT image can not be used, I tried that. It is the RECEIVED mms.*
Then in contacts choose the person you want, click the edit button, tap the square where the image shows in contacts, choose gallery and pick the sharper of the two that were saved. It has worked for me on the EVO today and my daughter's Hero. I have not tried this on the Droid yet. Multiple test calls show a nice, sharp contact image!

I need to list the 'Display name' of all the contacts belonging to a single account.I am planning to use a cursor adapter for populating the list and hence would require the corresponding fields (Display name, Account info) to be fetched in a single content provider querry.Looking at the Contacts Database Structure a single table amoung Raw Contacts, Contacts and Data wont be able to provide these two parameters and hence a join is necessary. As far as i know join wont be possible to fetch the data from the content provider.

I'm on my third Android phone, and the last two are still "active" (?) in Google Play, on the website. With my first phone, I didn't have to "Choose which device to install on". Now I do, and I want to know how to get rid of the other two devices. I don't have access to them and never will again. I sent the first one to a dev on SDX, across the country. The other one I only had for six days, and traded for my current device. So, there's no reason for them to be up there. (Both were wiped before I got rid of them, so neither of them can even get into my Google account.)
P.S. Is there any way to get Google to forget I ever had an app? I've tried a bunch of apps that didn't work and I really don't like them in my "All" column under My Apps, in the phone app. But that's not as big a deal.

Gonna be getting a new EVO Friday, and I already have a Hero. Wondering if I can have both devices using the same master Gmail account at the same time. What happens with the pay-fer apps in that case? I understand the apps are tied to the Gmail account so I will be able to get them back on the new device, just not sure if there is a sequence issue for what order I do things in. Do I have to delete the old Android from the master Gmail account before I link the new EVO to that Gmail account?

Every time I try to add a contact icon (from a saved image on my phone), my Magic saves a low-resolution version of the crop I make.
When I dial the contact, the picture looks HORRIBLE (it seems like the resolution is about 50x50px or something). I tried making contact icons from photos made with the phone or from high-res images that I transferred from my PC, but the outcome is always the same: the resolution of the icon is too small.
Is there a way to solve this problem? There's no point having a low-res image in a high-resolution image placeholder.

I'm wondering if anyone has figured out yet what the best resolution and/or aspect ratio is for custom contact photos? Most of my contact photos come from Facebook, but some I will edit on my PC and load onto the phone's SD card. I know there are issues with decent photos becoming low-res pixelated, so I'm wondering if I start with the best size and/or aspect ratio, maybe the phone won't have to resample the photos itself.

Droid X - Configured with a Google Apps Premiere, working great. Attempting to add a personal GMail account. Go to the GMail app, select add account, fill in the metrics and then...... "Needs to communicate" message for ~ 3 minutes, then bombs out with - "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server". 3G is fine, on a wifi connection that is fine, web browser works fine..... Google Apps account works fine.

Got a company Droid... Interesting to see how different ICS is on AT&T versus my Verizon phone. Anyhow, I am reluctant to set up my personal Google account info on the company phone. Only real issue with this is that I can't get to the Playstore.
How do others handle this?
