Android :: Sync Blackberry To Google Contact W/o Outlook

Aug 26, 2010

I am just putting it out there because I have never used any type of sync to get contacts from one phone to another.I simply let my my providers use their CellBrite machine to move from my old device to the new one. I don't use outlook although I might start. Point is I was truly starting at ground zero and the following post was to the point and detailed enough not to assume you had done this.It will be common knowledge for a lot, but for the rest of us very helpful. Have a great day fellow Droidians.Sync from Blackberry to CSV to GMail / G1 without Outlook. Here's a procedure to export contacts from a Blackberry and import into the G1 / Android using a CSV file and GMail Import, without using Outlook or Google Sync (I don't use Outlook, and had read about limitations/problems with Google Sync for Blackberry). This initially works best when you have a GMail account with maybe some but not all of the same contacts as are in your Blackberry, and with your G1 phone contacts relatively empty (or cleared) to avoid duplicating contacts.

Basically, you create a CSV file using Blackberry Manager (free download from T-mobile, etc.,), edit it using Excel or other spreadsheet program to change the heading names, import the resulting CSV file into the Gmail, then sync it directly into the G1. There are a few tricks, but the result is your contacts will be displayed exactly as you want them. The Export to CSV from Blackberry Manager (BBM) and the import of CSVs into GMail were not intuitive (at least not to me ;-), nor well documented anywhere I found. Here is how I did it using a T-Mobile Blackberry Pearl 8120, BBM vers 4.6 for Win XP, GMail as of 17-Nov-09, and T-Mobile G1 (Android 1.6)

HTC 4G :: Contact Sync Double And Disaster With Solution From Blackberry To Evo

Aug 23, 2010

If any of you have a google contact that is totally unorganized and chaotic like mines and don't want it to sync to your phone's contact but still wanted Gmail or Google Calender to sync than .... KEEP READING!!!

Problem:
Purchased Evo and wanted my contacts from Blackberry to go to Evo. Simple and done, but the process for activation required me to log onto my gmail account and I was like,"oh hell no!!!" but it was required. All contacts now sync with doubles of old and new numbers, total disaster I have all these email accounts and old phone numbers I don't want from previous syncs that I couldn't get rid of on my google account unless I weed them out one by one. I now have 2500+ contacts. Screw that, so onward!

Solution:
Spoke to Sprint tech support (free):

1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Accounts and Sync
3. Ensure Auto-sync is checked
4. Under Managed Accounts go to Google youraccount@gmail.com
5. Uncheck Sync Contact
6. Go to your local Sprint Store and then have them resync your Blackberry with your Evo
7. Stop reading and start enjoying...jeez!

Android :: Outlook Contact Sync - Non Exchange

Jun 9, 2009

I'm a developer writing an application to sync Outlook 2007 contacts with GMail. These are regular local-PST contacts, not Exchange, and yes, for now I'm exclusively focused on Outlook 2007 since that's what I have available. I may look at older versions (which I own) if this one works out. Anyway, I've tried most (all?) of the sync apps and didn't enjoy the experience. I've done the export/import thing and consider that a temporary fix. So I decided to do something about it myself.

The application I have today runs in the background and periodically pulls contact data from both systems. It can identify matches using a variety of prioritized criteria, and it has a way to systematically decide what data needs to be updated in each contact list. It can write changes to both sides. So it's largely done -- except for some decisions about that sync methodology.

The tricky thing about sync is that the GMail and Outlook contact data fields are totally different.

For example, GMail allows unlimited e-mail contacts which are tagged as Home, Work, and Other. By contrast, Outlook only supports three e-mail addresses, and they're not tagged at all. What should a sync app do if the GMail account has four addresses, but only three Outlook slots to store them?

A different example: GMail also supports unlimited phone numbers, also tagged with about six categories. On the other hand, Outlook can handle sixteen phone numbers, each with a fixed category. Some are a bit odd, like Radio Telephone. What should the sync app do if the GMail account has three Work numbers? Outlook only has Business 1 and Business 2...

Granted, these are what programmers call "edge cases" -- they won't apply to most users. But I'm hoping to find some people with large, complex Outlook address books who will weigh in with opinions about how they'd like problem cases handled.

Here is a comparison of the contact data in each system (exlcuding largely similar fields, and excluding the vast array of Outlook fields that simply have no GMail equivalent)--

E-mail Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 3, not tagged at all

Phone Numbers:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Mobile, Work Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other
Outlook: 16, one each of Primary, Mobile, Car, Home, Home 2, Business, Business 2, Assistant, Callback, Company, Business Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other, Radio Telephone, TTY/TDD

Postal Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 4, one each of Home, Mailing, Business, Other

IM Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo, Skype, QQ, MSN, ICQ, Jabber
Outlook: 1, untagged (probably should equate to MSN, but...?)

Generic "Other" Field:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: No direct equivalent

Web Address:
GMail: No direct equivalent
Outlook: 1, not tagged

The contact name is a special case. GMail does a poor job importing Outlook contacts since it leaves the name blank on business-only contacts. I guess Google devs only talk to their friends. The app I've written will fix your imported list in GMail by substituting the company name if the name is missing. Lots of little stuff like that is easy to do. It's the "unlimited" lists in GMail and the many places where there isn't a direct correlation that are creating questions in my mind.

When something doesn't quite match up should the app simply not do anything? Or would you prefer a partially successful sync? What about some sort of manual conflict resolution? What other options would you like to see in a sync app? (Limited to sync activity and contacts -- I don't plan to mess with ToDo lists, calendars or anything outside of contacts.)

General :: Google Sync For Blackberry

Jul 8, 2012

I put the app on my 9900 and tried to sync the phone's calendar to a gmail account I created. Everything looked like it worked ok, but the gmail calendar still contains no entries. In the Blackberry, the calendar entries are under ("send using") a non-gmail email account. Is there a better way to transition contacts and calendar entries for a move to android?

If I add a new entry in my calendar using the gmail account as the "send using" email account, it will load the entry into the gmail account. Then if I turn off "wireless synchronization" for the gmail account in the calendar options, it stops sending it twice and duplicating the entry in both the gmail and handheld calendars. woohoo.

So it does sync, but I suspect I need to access the calendar entries for the non-gmail accounts from gmail on the PC side for future transfer to new android device.

I tried to sync my Outlook contacts to the new HTC Desire, using HTC sync, (running Android 2.2) and it copied over the contact but only with their primary numbers and not all the numbers, emails or addresses.

I haven't tried anything else yet but surely I won't be the only one with this teething issue, can some of you guys give me an updates on this?

Android :: Google Calendar To Sync With Outlook

Sep 17, 2010

I am currently using Google Calendar on my desktop to sync with Outlook, strictly as a "backup" for my Outlook calendar, in case something were to happen and I needed a backup of my Outlook Calendar. I tried using Google Sync/Calendar on my Droid Incredible but had some problems and decided to go back to using HTC sync. Since that time, I have hard reset my phone but am now having problems with some appts showing up in duplicate on my Outlook calendar, My Google calendar and on my phone.

Even though I am only using HTC Sync on my phone and only using Google Calendar/Sync on my desktop, could this be the reason for these duplicates in all 3 places? Do I need to stop using Google calendar/Google sync with my Outlook to prevent this from happening further? Also, the only reason I stopped using Google Calendar for my Droid was that it seems you cannot keep more than a month or so worth of past appt's in your calendar and I need to go back at least a year for work. Does anyone else find this limitation or anything else about Google Calendar annoying and limiting?

Android :: What Outlook Sync Options For HTC Evo BESIDES Google?

Jun 4, 2010

I finally got my Evo today. I have to sync it with Outlook to keep this phone and I DESPERATELY want to keep this phone over my Blackberry. Syncing over the air via Google is out of the question because Google taints my work data is several ways. Not to mention that notes and tasks aren't supported by the Google OTA sync.I tried CompanionLink but it does not work with my Outlook system. It hangs up halfway through, and the troubleshooting says that it is likely a "corrupt" record in my calendar. "Calendar Record 22" whatever the f*ck that is referencing in Outlook.SO. Do I have any other options for syncing my memos, contacts, and notes from Outlook to the phone? Please say yes.

Android : Sync MS Exchange Outlook Calendar To Nexus One WITHOUT Google Pc App?

Jan 6, 2010

So I am a proud owner of a brand new Nexus One. I love it, but have hit a small hitch.

I am previously an iphone user and got quite a lot of use out of syncing my work (exchange) calendar onto my iphone and using it on the go to keep track of meetings and such.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like this is native functionality in Android 2.1? I was able to set up my work email account with active sync, and that works fine... but when I look in the Accounts area of settings and select my work email, there is no option to sync Calendar.

I have read that you can use the google calendar desktop application to sync your outlook (via plugin) to your google calendar, which the Android device could then pull down... unfortunately, like many users in a professional environment, the IT group here refuses to give me admin privileges on my work computer. I tried installing the google calendar app into a non-protected directory, but when it tries to activate the Outlook plugin it simply fails with an error listed as 1008. Upon looking that up, it of course says it is user privileges related.

In addition, if my work PC is off, I wouldn't get those new meetings pushed to my device anyway... so that is a big hassle as well.

Is there a free way to get this done WITHOUT the google calendar desktop app? I have all the account info I need (hell, I already set this up many times on my iphone over the years)...

EDIT: Also I would like to state that I don't want a separate calendar app... I want to use the base Android one. I'm fine with getting an app to enable that, but I don't really want to have 2 different calendar apps to go through...

HTC Wildfire :: Sync HTC Device With Outlook AND Google Calendar

Oct 12, 2010

Does anyone know how to sync a calendar of a HTC Android device with Outlook AND Google Calendar? I explicitly mention "a calendar" and "a HTC Android device" since this seems to be a general problem.I installed HTC Sync 3.0 and managed to get Outlook Calendar items from Outlook to the HTC Wildfire. Frustratingly HTC Sync creates a new Calendar on my phone called "PC Sync". So all the items go there. Since this is a new calendar not a single calendar item from my phone goes to Outlook. When I move or create appointments in this new category, they also appear in Outlook. Though this category issue is annoying, the most annoying is that these appointments do not appear in Google Calendar. The new category is simply not there. I suspect "HTC Sync" is a special local category like "My Calendar" is.HTC obviously doesn't quite understand what "synchronization" means and what customers want. Unbelievable that HTC creates its own category where by default there is only one-way synchronization. Not to speak from synchronization from the phone and Google Calendar. Does anyone have an idea how to get Outlook and Google Calendar synchronized via my HTC device?

Motorola Droid :: Sync Outlook Contacts And Calendar To Google

Nov 10, 2009

For people who want a fully automatic way to keep both Calendar & Contacts sync'd both ways between Outlook and Google Gmail / Calendar.

I've already done a lot of research on this topic as it is currently the most important item I've got to have working in order to keep the Droid. It seems like nobody really has a great solution yet, but there are some in the works. This thread can serve as a master list for Outlook sync software.

Here is what I've found so far:

CompanionLink $40 (released, sounds like the best currently available): Sync Microsoft Outlook with your Google account and your phone | CompanionLink

Missing-Sync $40(update: Released. Calendar syncing is now supported, but requires additional app installed on phone.): Keep your life in sync with The Missing Sync for Android from Mark/Space Appears to be the best all-in-one solution for syncing Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Docs, Media and more. Includes 'Proximity Sync' - syncs wirelessly & automatically w/ your computer.

gSyncit $15 (released, but lots of problems reported by users. EDIT: Some favorable reviews in this thread, may have improved reliability): http://www.daveswebsite.com/software/gsync/

SyncMyCal $25 (released): Share Outlook Calendar Free, Google Calendar Sync, Pocket Outlook Google Sync - SyncMyCal

Anybody using this?

OGG Sync $30/yr (Not yet released): OggSync - Sync Google Calendar and Contacts with Outlook and Windows Mobile Device Sync (including Microsoft Office) Blog Archive Real... Native... Google Contact Sync — OggSync 4.0

Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook $50/yr (Requires Google Apps Premier or EDU Edition):[url]

Are there any good free apps out there that can sync Contacts? Tell me and I'll add them to the list.
