Android :: How To Show Search Bar?
Jul 21, 2009
I want to add the search function in my application just as the example given in ApiDemos. But I can't find out how the example add the search bar in the top of the view. Could anyone tell me how to add a search bar to my application by some code?

I have a little question, perhaps it's quite easy, but I've been looking for it for over a week now.
When I search on the market for a specific application, say "shazam", I get a message;
Suggestion
- Make sure all words are spelled correctly
- Try other keywords
- Try less specific keywords
However in the top bar it says
"1 result for Shazam"
But the result isn't showed. I have this problem with up to 9 search results.
I'm using a HTC Hero. Any suggestions on this one?

I have a debranded Desire, originally sold by Telus in Canada, which I updated to Froyo using the instructions on this site. Everything works fine except that all google search results post UK based urls, rather than US and local search results. I have Google settings to remember my location but I cannot figure out to stop this from happening. It happens using the google search button or when using a bookmarked google web page.

I would like to create a search in my app which acts like the map search in the Google Maps app. I have creates an an auto complete text view which updates dynamically based on the results of the Geocoder.GetLocationByName() Method. However the results retrieved from this function are really bad and not at all consistent with the text I pass to it. Is there a better method of doing this to achieve accurate results?

When implementing search in my application, I'm including some search context info depending on the activity where search is invoked. In one of those, I'd like to implement type-to-search as well, but the standard method of adding search context info doesn't work in that case... the onSearchRequested() method in the activity is never called. Is there any way to include search context info in a type-to-search invocation, or am I stuck with only the Search key and menu option?

I wanted to put this in the droid X section because the default way of searching contacts is horrible. I installed gesture search last night and now one of my few gripes with the phone is solved. I hated having to having to hold the options button to bring up a keyboard and then having to clear my last entry to start another search.

I know I'm not the only person that gets emails with embedded html or inlined images via google mail. When I get emails like this, I have to click on "Show HTML" or "Show Picture" every single time an email comes in if I actually want to see the email the way it was intended to be shown. I know for a fact that iphones and other email readers dont have any issues with this. Is there a setting to automatically display the email the way it was meant to be shown instead of having to click these buttons each time I want to view the email correctly? Or, perhaps there's already a market app that forces the android email client to display emails correctly?

I am developing an application that needs to extend the functionality of the android search bar. Basically I need to show a bitmap image for each suggestion. The current implementation of the search bar enables to show resource icons (with Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_1 and Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_2). I don't see the way to customize the native search dialog. I think it is not a good idea to create my search component. I found an old entry in this group, but it doesn't have any answer (HTTP:// www.mail-archive.com/android-developers@googlegroups.com/msg31090.html). Basically the question is the same: "is the search UI customizable at all"?

I'm new to Android, and it kind of frustrates me that there's no "advanced search" option in the app marketplace. If I want to search for "keyboard", for example, I have to search through an assload of skins to find an actual program. Same when I tried to search for Open Home--again, an assload of skins. Am I missing something, or is there a better way to search/sort searches rather than having to sort through, for example, the 464 results for Open Home?

I have searched the forum and found other people in the past looking to do local searches but I didn't see an answer. I also found the documentation for the AJAX api but I'm not sure if that is what I need. I'm a little lost and I'm not sure exactly where to begin. An example would be great. I have a List View and I need to show business names in it. The names will come from a Google search based off of category and locale Ideally the results will come back in XML, but I can handle anything else if necessary.

I have to search in an almost-static table with two fields, both strings, SHORT_NAME and LONG_NAME. I have to search for the short name and the program will show me the long one. What's the better way to do it in android? I've thought to distribute an XML file with the application, and to search in it. Is this a good idea or could I do better? If it's a good idea, do you have a sample or a link to a page that explains how to do it?

I recently installed LauncherPro on my Droid and am trying to make use of the additional home screen space. One thing I would like to do is create a on-click shortcut to search for nearby hardware stores (I'm a contractor and sometimes need to pickup task-specific materials). I could swear there used to be a shortcut available called "Direct Search" or something like that, that would do just what I'm looking for, but I don't see it when I try to add a shortcut to the home screen. Did this used to exist, or was it just my imagination? Is there anything like it now? I know I could make a bookmark in the browser and place a shortcut to the bookmark on the home screen, but I was hoping for the results to come up in Google Maps.

In my application, we allow users to add locations. So far, we have been using the Geocoder class to let users search for different locations. For the most part, this works quite well. However, there are some issues we have been running into and I'm not sure what we can do to fix them.
Some searches (such as "moscow") return nothing when I feel you should definitely be getting a result for this. Other searches (such as "que") give very poor results and not the ones you would expect. However, if I use the Google maps application and run these same searches, I get results as I would expect.
I would really like my app to give search results like the maps application! My guess is that since the maps application is developed by Google, they are using some search functionality not available to the rest of us developers. Unless I'm missing something?
How to get better search results?
