Android :: Search Context With Type To Search?

May 1, 2009

When implementing search in my application, I'm including some search context info depending on the activity where search is invoked. In one of those, I'd like to implement type-to-search as well, but the standard method of adding search context info doesn't work in that case... the onSearchRequested() method in the activity is never called. Is there any way to include search context info in a type-to-search invocation, or am I stuck with only the Search key and menu option?

Android :: Best Yellow Pages Search Type App?

Nov 19, 2009

I have tried yellow pages search app and app and both apparently need gps or location because when I search it put me in Germany and doesn't find what I need, when I go to find myself ie: location, it finds me in the last location I was or in Germany or London or omthing and again doesn't work. It is a well known fact the samsung rumor has gps issues (for now anyways) until a hopeful update fixes it. Yes I have tried the wifi trick and some other things and still no luck....its a crap shoot, you may or may not find yourself.
So until such time as the patch/update is out is there a recommended app that works like Yellow Pages Local Directory - YELLOWPAGES.COM does with no location needed, you just use a zip code or city and state.

Android :: Method Undefined For Type SmsReciever - Context

Nov 13, 2010

I am developing an app that upon receiving an SMS message with a unique string of text, the GPS is enabled and starts tracking the location of the phone. The issue I'm having is with the getSystemService() method.
I receive the error "The method getSystemService(String) is undefined for the type SmsReceiver", I believe this is because it does not have a context. I have tried to add in a context with in my code with 'ctx', and that removes the error but my application crashes every time I run it on my phone. The code for recieving the SMS works fine, and the GPS location tracking code works fine if it's in my main class.
I still don't fully understand contexts.

Android :: Customize Search Bar UI

Aug 27, 2009

I am developing an application that needs to extend the functionality of the android search bar. Basically I need to show a bitmap image for each suggestion. The current implementation of the search bar enables to show resource icons (with Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_1 and Search Manager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_ICON_2). I don't see the way to customize the native search dialog. I think it is not a good idea to create my search component. I found an old entry in this group, but it doesn't have any answer (HTTP:// Basically the question is the same: "is the search UI customizable at all"?

Android :: Better Way To Search For Applications?

Nov 11, 2009

I'm new to Android, and it kind of frustrates me that there's no "advanced search" option in the app marketplace. If I want to search for "keyboard", for example, I have to search through an assload of skins to find an actual program. Same when I tried to search for Open Home--again, an assload of skins. Am I missing something, or is there a better way to search/sort searches rather than having to sort through, for example, the 464 results for Open Home?

Android :: Need Google Search

I also found the documentation for the AJAX api but I'm not sure if that is what I need. I'm a little lost and I'm not sure exactly where to begin. An example would be great. I have a List View and I need to show business names in it. The names will come from a Google search based off of category and locale Ideally the results will come back in XML, but I can handle anything else if necessary.

Android :: Direct Search Shortcut?

May 31, 2010

I recently installed LauncherPro on my Droid and am trying to make use of the additional home screen space. One thing I would like to do is create a on-click shortcut to search for nearby hardware stores (I'm a contractor and sometimes need to pickup task-specific materials). I could swear there used to be a shortcut available called "Direct Search" or something like that, that would do just what I'm looking for, but I don't see it when I try to add a shortcut to the home screen. Did this used to exist, or was it just my imagination? Is there anything like it now? I know I could make a bookmark in the browser and place a shortcut to the bookmark on the home screen, but I was hoping for the results to come up in Google Maps.

Android :: Geocoder And Location Search

Jul 8, 2010

In my application, we allow users to add locations. So far, we have been using the Geocoder class to let users search for different locations. For the most part, this works quite well. However, there are some issues we have been running into and I'm not sure what we can do to fix them.

Some searches (such as "moscow") return nothing when I feel you should definitely be getting a result for this. Other searches (such as "que") give very poor results and not the ones you would expect. However, if I use the Google maps application and run these same searches, I get results as I would expect.

I would really like my app to give search results like the maps application! My guess is that since the maps application is developed by Google, they are using some search functionality not available to the rest of us developers. Unless I'm missing something?

How to get better search results?

Android :: Odd Behavior With A Search Activity

Oct 24, 2009

I have a package with two activities

1. A main activity 2. A search activity

The search activity is invoked by a search suggestion provider in two possible ways

1. By clicking directly on a suggestion invoking the search activity through a VIEW action 2. By clicking on the explicit search icon invoking the activity through SEARCH action

If it is invoked through SEARCH I stay on the search activity and show some text to the user. Now when I click the back button I go back CORRECTLY to the home page.

ODD Behaviour: However if I came to the search activity through the VIEW, I invoke a browser activity and call finish() on the search activity. Now I have the browser in my view. If I now go back I would expect to go back to teh device home page. But from now where the "main activity" is showing up.

I see in the logcat a message from ActivityManager indicating

moveTaskToBack: 8

I have tried various flags to invoke the browser activity the tried flags include new task previous is top and I have also tried both a singleTop and otherwise with the SearchActivity as well. Same end result.

Android :: Market Search Box Complaint

Nov 19, 2009

using Droid the market search box will bring up previous search list and it drives me nuts that I can't click on one and EDIT it before it just launches.I would prefer it would put it in the box and wait for me to hit search button, giving me a chance to correct or expand on or otherwise edit the chosen previous search text.I really wish it would act like google on the computer where the results page has your search text in a box on the page allowing you to tweak it EASILY. It is hard enough to type on this thing and ANYTHING that would eliminate retyping would be GREAT.I don't see a topic for android suggestions for general improvement (as opposed to app suggestions), so I put this in here.
