Mar 28, 2010I have google voice and use it for every phone call I make. I heard that there were issues with several gvoice updates, so I haven't updated google voice since 0.2.8 and it is working just fine- every call connects, no problems. Is it worth updating to the newest version of google voice with push? For those of you with 2.1 on your Eris- does google voice work for you?

If you, like me, have your outbound Google Voice access number set as one of your "Family and Friends", you'll find that all outbound calls are currently free (since Verizon sees them as going through the outbound number, regardless of who you actually call). However, this new method assigns a personal number to EACH contact.
So if your girlfriend or brother already had Verizon, and you didn't use Google Voice, it would be free calling.
But if you called them with the old Google Voice application, they would both appear on your bill as calls to your Google Voice access number. (So if you had that one number on your Friends and Family line, you could call both of them -- and anyone else -- without using any minutes.)
HOWEVER, if you upgraded, your brother essentially has 1 non-Verizon number, and your girlfriend has another non-Verizon number, so even though they're both Verizon users, you're going to get screwed over with minute usage.
Keep an eye out for these things! Google either needs to work with Verizon (and AT&T, etc.) to fix this gap, or they need to keep it an option to use a single outbound access number. I know I won't be upgrading my Google Voice app until they fix this.

Oct 15, 2009Is anyone else interested in how Google voice will affect calling minutes? If you currently have your GV number set to call your Sprint cell and your incoming call is from another cell phone will you be charged for the minutes? If you setup your phone so GV is used to call all numbers that you dial will you be charged for calling other cellular number because GV masks the number? I have been through every level of support that Sprint offers and no one can answer me. Sadly tier 3 technical support told me "Google Voice is useless on a cell phone and you would not want to use this anyway". I had nothing more to say after that!

The only widget I can find is "voice search" but this seems to not be dialing specific and may choose to search the web for you etc. My question: Is there a dialing specific voice command widget, if not how do I do it properly?
I have a parrot bluetooth kit which usually prompts a phone to ask for a voice command. The desire although linked, doesn't seem to respond.

Nov 30, 2010I am joining the Captivate crowd. Currently browsing deals (frustratingly, most won't allow me to choose the small plan I require).
I read a few places that you can't use voice command/control when the phone is on bluetooth. Has there been any change to this since it was first released?
My car stereo is equipped to use a phone via bluetooth, with a microphone mounted by the rear view mirror. I live for this at times, but voice dialing would be 10x more helpful than scrolling through contacts on the stereo screen.
Also, I'd love to know if you can legitimately get visual voicemail without paying a monthly fee? At least for now, I want to keep the phone legit and not mess with warranty, etc.
I'm obviously asking for a brand new phone - as of right now, not "well, when it was released x, y, z" as I think sometimes things change quickly with phones.

Jul 29, 2010I finally changed the voicemail system on my Hero from Sprint's "visual voicemail" (which is misleading because it doesn't transcribe voicemails) to Google Voice. It's nice to see my transcribed voicemails now. However, when I actually want to hear them (if the transcription didn't work well), it only comes through the external speaker; the speaker on the back of the phone. I went into Google Voice settings and under "Voicemail Playback" I tried the only two options: "Play via Handset" and "Play via Speaker." Unfortunately, both play through the speaker phone speaker. How do I change it to the phone speaker? I also can't adjust the volume, so the whole world hears my voicemails through the external speaker.

Jan 23, 2010I changed the voice mail number from *86 (version default) to my Google voice number. This works when I am not answering the phone and I the caller gets connected to my GV account. But when my phone is not in coverage the caller gets my version voice mail. Appreciate if someone can correct my settings or suggest any app that does it. I am from Windows mobile world and missing those settings when you can define several settings for voice mail (unanswered, rejected, unavailable etc...)

Jun 11, 2010I know how to use google and search, but I still like personal feedback incase I missed something.Rooted with Unrevoked. Overclock Widget battery life tweak and the google talk/flickr/other battery tweaks. I'm going on 16 hours today with normal usage and the tweaks - Anyhow, yesterday and prior to that gmail and gvoice push was instant, but today and last night it's been slow and often never even comes unless I go to the app and update it manually. I do have ATK installed, but turned the auto kill to off and only use it when the bloat-sprint apps get running. So don't flame about that.Also, I changed the notification sound on each account and now I hear the set sound (quagmire app) and the android default after - when a push actually comes through.I can't find any settings that I unchecked that would make it not update as fast or at all (been back though all of them), but perhaps something else is screwy - I do have gmail and gvoice tabs open on 1 to 2 computers all day, if that would do it.And I guess I can't use data (unless it's wifi or 4G) while I'm in a phone call? Which really sucks because I like to do data related stuff while I'm talking to family and people who just blaber on and on. Miss that about my iPhone but other than that, I'm sold on android - 9 people I know got the evo already.

May 16, 2010I have searched around for an answer to these two issues, but haven't been able to find anything. After doing the manual upgrade to 2.1 OTA, most everything is fine. However, Google Voice and Google Listen are having issues. Google Voice is giving me a Force Close message every time I receive a text message in Hand cent SMS (to my non-GV number). I don't actually use GV on my voice all that often. Google Listen seems to have lost all trace of any of my pod casts, including new ones that have come in since the update. Every episode on every pod cast has, just under the title: "Error (sd card/com.goggle.android.apps.listen/downloads/e55bee71)" The string of letters and numbers on each one is different. I used Astor File Manager to look in this folder and each of those files is not there. Some of these folders were downloaded a month ago (I'm a little slow in getting to some pod casts) and some I have listened to already pre update but still getting the error now. Some that I have listened to are not giving the error. And any that were downloaded after the update are giving the error.

There's been apps like Groove IP that are already able to provide this feature. I'd just like to have this functionality without having to install any 3rd party apps that always have to be running in the background. Google Hangouts is already the primary sms app for Android & so it is already able to receive texts, mms, along with video and voice chats. Thus, it should be somewhat possible to receive call forwarding from Google voice.
Samsung Captivate :: Google Voice Without Google Numbers
Jul 26, 2010I am using Captivate on the AT&T network and looking into goggle voice. Since the main feature I am interested in (for now) is the visual voice mail, I was thinking of getting the option without the GV number and therefore, keeping my cell phone number. I have several questions:
1. Does this work well with the Captivate phone?
2. Is there any delay in getting the voice mails by going through GV?
3. Does this eat into my data plan at all? Currently, I am only on the 200 mb plan per month.
4. If I try to get text messages through GV, would that not use up my data plan and instead come through my Internet connection ( which could at times be free if I am in a WiFi zone)?

Nov 12, 2009So I have my Facebook account set to sync with my contact but I use Google voice all the time for text and phone. Is there a way to get the pictures that go with my contact to show up when they text or call my gvoice number?
All my pictures are from Facebook so if everything works right the pictures I see in gvoice should be the same as the profile pix in FB.

May 12, 2010I was wondering if anyone has been using Google Talk exclusively for SMS and ditched their texting w Verizon all together. I mainly ask as I am curious how reliable it is as a replacement for SMS. I'd love to cut my phone bill by $20 a month. My friend (5-6 months ago) said he was having issues w Gtalk in regards to some msgs not sending, or he never actually received them to his phone. He had issues with his N1 on Tmobile. Is anyone still experiencing similar problems? My SMS MUST function and be completely reliable as I use it constantly to communicate with my managers.

* It doesn't thread correctly. It will randomly create a new thread for messages with the same contact
* I can't send to multiple people simultaneously
* I'd like to see a popup when I get a text, even when the screen is locked
