Motorola Droid X :: Calling Out Using Google Voice
Jul 19, 2010
I have google voice set up to make all calls. But whenever I call out, I call out using the phone's number, and not my google voice number. I've tried looking through all the settings on both the app and the desktop version and have not found anything that works. I still get my SMS through the app, so the service is working. I just can't get it to call out using my google voice number, and this was automatic on my incredible

Is it just me but I can no longer call out using GV - I set it - but it doesn't seem to actually work; the receiving party sees the call as coming from my regular cell #

I like how the Google Voice looks when making calls. Is there any way to make it look like this all of the time, not just using Google Voice?

I changed the voice mail number from *86 (version default) to my Google voice number. This works when I am not answering the phone and I the caller gets connected to my GV account. But when my phone is not in coverage the caller gets my version voice mail. Appreciate if someone can correct my settings or suggest any app that does it. I am from Windows mobile world and missing those settings when you can define several settings for voice mail (unanswered, rejected, unavailable etc...)

I'm running Cyanogenmod 6. I just noticed that I can't find Google voice or Google maps in the market. I do have the apps installed, but can't see them int he market to get updates. I tried out LFY1.7 and Ultimate Droid 1.0.0, and see the same issue.

Google Voice Blog: Faster dialing with Google Voice on Android and Blackberry devices
If you, like me, have your outbound Google Voice access number set as one of your "Family and Friends", you'll find that all outbound calls are currently free (since Verizon sees them as going through the outbound number, regardless of who you actually call). However, this new method assigns a personal number to EACH contact.
So if your girlfriend or brother already had Verizon, and you didn't use Google Voice, it would be free calling.
But if you called them with the old Google Voice application, they would both appear on your bill as calls to your Google Voice access number. (So if you had that one number on your Friends and Family line, you could call both of them -- and anyone else -- without using any minutes.)
HOWEVER, if you upgraded, your brother essentially has 1 non-Verizon number, and your girlfriend has another non-Verizon number, so even though they're both Verizon users, you're going to get screwed over with minute usage.
Keep an eye out for these things! Google either needs to work with Verizon (and AT&T, etc.) to fix this gap, or they need to keep it an option to use a single outbound access number. I know I won't be upgrading my Google Voice app until they fix this.

Is anyone else interested in how Google voice will affect calling minutes? If you currently have your GV number set to call your Sprint cell and your incoming call is from another cell phone will you be charged for the minutes? If you setup your phone so GV is used to call all numbers that you dial will you be charged for calling other cellular number because GV masks the number? I have been through every level of support that Sprint offers and no one can answer me. Sadly tier 3 technical support told me "Google Voice is useless on a cell phone and you would not want to use this anyway". I had nothing more to say after that!

I am in the process of purchasing my first android phone. I currently have a google voice number/account. I would like MMS and simple number support for messaging. From my understanding google voice does not support that. I did read about an application called iTim for the iphone which allows you to use MMS through google voice. Is there any such product for the Android? Having SMS/texting through google voice would save $30/month on my cell phone bill, so it's kind of a big deal.

I was notified today of a Google Voice Update, version 0.2.8. I installed it and don't see any changes, but hopefully they fixed the issue of it automatically sending "double text messages" in certain situations.

The second video posted that shows the droid running 2.1 shows what seems to be a google voice update. The icon looks nicer to fit the 2.0/2.1 icons and it now says "Voice" instead of "Google Voice." This would be a welcomed change if so!

Just got a Google Voice invite (Thanks DrDroid!) and have completed setting it up with my existing number. Went through the verification process and dialed the * number from my phone and everything went well. Got my welcome messages and all. Problem is though when I call myself and voicemail picks up, It just says "We are having trouble completing your call. Enter the phone number you are trying to reach".

I have two google voice accounts. On the first one, I did not choose a Google number, I ported my Verizon number instead. On the second one, I chose a Google number to get maximum benefits from it. So, the question is, if I give my Google number to some people (business associates), and give my Verizon number to others (family, friends, etc.), can I still receive calls and texts to both numbers on the same phone?

I just changed my google voice number to a google number today from the random number I had before. But now I can't call it from any 216 area code. This creates a problem because my phone is a 216 area code. So I can't call my own voicemail - It just says the number cannot be completed as dialed. When I call from a different area code it's fine. No contact groups or anything are blocked and I can call out. I'm stock and haven't rooted or anything.

I have a google voice number and I have the friends and family plan on verizon. I currently have my google voice number on my friends and family plan. Do all calls that go through my google voice number count as friends and family? Also, I currently do not have google voice set up to make calls. If I were to set it up that way, would that mean that all my outgoing calls would also be counted as friends and family?

I don't know if its coincidence but i just bought the motorola extended battery and my phone seems to be lagging alot with google voice and just seems a little unstable overall. Been loving my x but has been letting me down since the new battery, though i love the battery life with it. Guess i need to try the old battery again and see if it improves.

I'm looking for ways to reduce my phone bill, and ideally I would get rid of my unlimited text plan. Yet, I have heard that SMS messages sent through GV aren't as speedy or reliable as those sent through your carrier. I've read that it often takes up to 5 minutes to receive a text message after one is sent to you. If I'm in the middle of a "texting conversation" I don't want to have to wait 5 minutes to receive a reply to one of my texts.. Is this true? Or does Google Voice SMS work like a charm and I should just drop my $20 a month text plan?

Is there any way I can use Google Voice SMS through Handcent, the stock SMS client, or any other client? Also, I noticed that my Voice sms's are coming in much later than on my other device (iphone with textnow routing google voice messages). Is there any reason for that? I would think the Droid would be faster since it is integrated with voice.
