Android :: Get Permission To Install Droid SDK On University Computers?
Feb 2, 2010
I'm teaching an Android course at Hawaii Pacific University, and I want to install the Android SDK and ADT on university computers, but the University policy requires explicit permission from Google.
Does anyone know who I could contact at Google to get an official statement that it was okay to install the software on University computers?

I am sure that the permission is granted as I declare this in my manifest. Hence the app wouldn't be installed if the user didn't grant the permission.
(a) My guess is that it's a rooted phone where the app is started from an SD card (or similar) whereby the original user id has changed after the install. (b) This could be a Cupcake "feature". Acquiring wake locks has gone down a similar path as turning GPS on?
I am trying to track down (a) with my users, but this takes some time. I meanwhile now that at least one user uses a JF image. Anybody else has experience with that issue? if (b) might be valid? The app works on my 1.5 emulator and on > 400 phones with Cupcake, at least it is installed on them and users don't submit bug reports. So I guess (b) is not the case, but who knows?

I am adding an option to my app (Executive Assistant) to integrate with the Astrid TODO list app. Astrid defines the permissions necessary for doing this. My app uses those permissions. Everything works fine if Astrid is installed before my app. However, many users will use my app first, then decide to use Astrid later (e.g., in at least some cases, because its now supported by my app). However, in this case, I will get a SecurityException if I try to read from the Astrid ContentProvider since that permission didn't exist when my app was installed.
One easy solution would be to simply uninstall, then re-install my app after Astrid has been installed. However, this would require the user to reconfigure my app, which would understandably be quite annoying for the user. (1) is there any way for my app to "re-request" the permission after Astrid has been installed? And, (2) if not, is there any easy way to save & restore my applications data (database & shared preferences) between an uninstall/reinstall so that the user does not have to reconfigure?

I plan to get a Droid X here sometime in the coming month, and I'm terribly excited about it. One thing I'd really like to be able to do is check my university email on my phone, without having to go through a browser. Is it possible that I'll be able to do so? When I go to log in to the website where I check my email, it says "Microsoft Exchange" at the top. I've heard others mention "exchange" email accounts. Is this what it's referring to? Will I be able to check my universal inbox and get my school email?

I am a beginner for android development. I found my application always get "Not granting permission" warning when I install it by adb and AppsInstaller as following.
CODE:.............
And my application cannot inject DTMF tone and mute the micphone on call, I doubt it is related with the permission not granted issue, is correct? Could any one can tell me how to get the permission granted? I used the debug.keystore, is that related?

I tried following the directions posted on my university's website and also contacted IT department but they haven't gotten back to me yet. Here are the directions I tried to follow:
GroupWise IMAP
Configure Your IMAP Client
Configure your IMAP client using these specifications:
imaps.luc.edu is your "Inbound Mail," "INBOX server" or "Incoming E-mail server"
993 is your "Port", for INBOX server Port," or "Incoming E-mail server Port"
SSL is your security setting.
mail.luc.edu is your "Outbound Mail," "SMTP gateway," or
"Outgoing E-mail server" if Loyola is your Internet provider (see note below)
your Loyola Computer ID is your username
the client should check for new e-mail every 10 (or more) minutes
Note: If you do not connect to the Internet through Loyola, your "Outbound Mail" or "Outgoing E-mail server" specification will NOT be mail.luc.edu. Check with your Internet service provider for the correct specification. The outgoing email settings must be incorrect. After fooling around, I managed to make it work so that I can read my university email with email app but responses to said emails will end up going through my gmail account. I want to be able to send outgoing messages through my university address as well. It should be possible seeing as my university is offering IMAP functionality, plus my girlfriend goes to the same school and her Blackberry is synced up with the email server perfectly.

Next year there will be Android programming classes on Wroclaw University (Poland) but handsets for excersises needs to be choosen now. I was thinking about HTC Hero because:
As HTC device it is a reference model for Android ecosystem; it will run system version 2.0; it has fair features/price ratio.
Are there any arguments against Hero? Or maybe there is another handset more suitable for programming classes?

I use "Palm VNC" to control my computers via my Palm TX; this is most useful for one particular pc as I can use the Palm's touch screen to activate commands rather than the mouse on the pc. A quick point with a finger and the command fires rather than picking up the mouse, moving to the required spot on the screen then clicking. Even more useful when I am at the other end of the room and need to fire the command. I see that there are many VNC apps for Android/Desire. What is the forum's experience of the various VNC apps?

Computers and laptops won't exist, only smartphones. We will have desktop and laptop DOCKING stations that we can plug our phones into. Those stations will have no computing or storage or networking capabilities. They will only contain a keyboard, a mouse or touch pad, and a viewing monitor. They will simply receive input from the user and send it to the phone, and display or sound the output.Such docking stations will exist at home, school, work, airports and other public places.

I'm developing on multiple computers. If I deploy to my phone directly from Eclipse on one computer, I can't deploy from the other without uninstalling first. I'm assuming this is because there is a debug certificate being used to sign the app, and they're not the same across the two machines. Is it possible to copy one over to the other so that Eclipse is using the same one on both machines?

I was unable to find much information regarding compatibility of the Samsung Galaxy with MAC computers. On behalf of the small number of MAC users in this forum, I made a call to Samsung tech support re: how to do the Frodo update with a MAC computer. I was told that the Galaxy phone is PC based and, at present, Samsung does not have a plan to port Kies to OS X. In order to install the Frodo update when it is available, if we don't have an application such as Parallels or Virtual PC, we will have to borrow a PC to do the job.

When I connect my phone to my computers (Win 7 or 2 XP machines) it always connects as A/C and not as USB. I downloaded the Samsung USB drivers and this worked on the Win 7 machine for a while but then started connected as A/C again. Un-installed and installed the drivers again but they do now work now. The Samsung drivers did not work on either of the XP machines. So, as of now I think it is the phone? I do have the Power Manager app installed and the phone still connects as A/C with it running or not.

I just ordered a Lenovo S2110 Android tablet with keyboard dock. The idea was to use this 20 hour machine on road trips to do work related activities. For my job, I need to connect via VPN to get access to my work's intranet. I can do that fine in Windows on my pc or my work laptop. I was hoping to do this via Android and the Cisco AnyConnect program. Unfortunately my company doesnt have the license for Cisco AnyConnect mobile so I cannot connect directly via android.
Is it at all possible to connect and share the connection via my home pc that is connected via VPN via the internet somehow? Meaning, can I have VPN running at home and if I am away, connect through the internet and get the VPN tunnel to my android so I can connect to the work websites through the Android browser? Or access my shared network drive?
Only other option I see is using Team Viewer of Splash Desktop to connect as a remote session, but that is not preferable .
