Android :: IPhone - Creating Good Interfaces?
Jan 8, 2010I'm porting an iPhone app to Android and I'm having trouble designing an interface that looks and feels "Android." I've read all of the design documents in the Android Dev Guide and looked through all the Google-designed apps, but I feel like the layout of activities is largely undefined. Are there any resources that could help me transition my iPhone design to the Android platform? Here's a quick example of one of my issues. On the iPhone, every view that presents user generated content gives the user a "+" button in the upper right hand corner of the screen to add an item. It's consistent across the built in apps, and it's *mostly* standard among third-party apps.
I don't know what to do with the "+" button on Android. The guidelines say important actions should be present on the screen and not hidden within a menu, so let's say I put it on the screen. It shouldn't go at the bottom of a long list of items, because the user shouldn't have to scroll down every time they want to create a new item. That leaves me with a static button. But there are no standard toolbars, so I'm going to design my own iPhone-esque bar at the top of the screen with a "+" button? I know this probably sounds like a rant, and I'm sorry. I feel it would be worthwhile for someone to sit down and document how common iPhone UI practices should be transitioned to Android apps. I care a lot about UI design - I think it's one of the most important factors in app development -- and I'd hate to see every transitioning developer approach this differently. At any rate, does anyone know of existing resources that might help me out? What's the best designed app you've used for Android? A few examples of great "Android" interfaces would go a long way.
Sprint HTC Hero :: Second Half Of Battery Drains Faster Than First Half - No Music Playing - No Wi-fi - No Internet Browsing
Oct 15, 2009I used my Hero this morning/afternoon with music, wi-fi, internet browsing, and I used up the first half of the battery. And after that, I have been mostly studying and not using my phone... but the second half of the batter drains, it seems like, FASTER than the first half did! No music playing, no wi-fi, no internet browsing? Is this normal? Is it just the nature of these batteries?

It has the best facebook app on its homepage and IMO it is way superior to any out there.The browsing is super fast and you have the ability to download videos from your favorite sites to your sd card. Jun 14, 2010I dropped my phone yesterday for the second story of my apartment complex. It hit the ground really hard, but landed on it's back. Everything seems to work perfect, except that one of the sliders (top keyboard slider) that connects the keyboard to the screen, bracket came off. A small piece broke off but it still looks like it can go back in the sliding area. Right now the keyboard is only sliding open from the bottom bracket.
I can't seem to figure out how to slide this bracket that's on the keyboard back inside the sliding area on the back of the screen. I have had this phone since it came out and I don't have the protection plan. Not sure if sprint will fix this for me and how much it will cost, or if I can fix it on my own or if I will need to buy a new phone. But this thing isn't going to last much longer with the phone only being held in place and sliding with 1 slider.

Nov 14, 2010With a free sunday at my disposal, i thought i would try and sort my hero out as it has become super-laggy after the OTA 2.1 update (HTC hero locked to 3UK network, previously had 1.5).
So i've been trying to read as much as i can on this and other forums and got as far as installing Universal Androot, which reported success in rooting the phone.
However have now installed (and bought PRO ver) of Titanium Backup which refuses to recognize the root. It returns:
ERROR: Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.
Yet, TB is listed as 'allowed' under SuperUser Permissions. And even weirder when the error dialogue box comes up sometimes a strapline flashes briefly across the screen 'Titanium backup has been granted .. permissions'. I take it that this is Superuser informing me.
So why doesn't Titanium recognize the root? Have tried re-starting and rerunning Androot (which reports that phone is already rooted, do you still wish to proceed). It's almost as if superuser isn't giving the OK fast enough or something.
Obviously don't want to start messing around with ROMs if i can't first backup my data!
HTC Desire :: Factory Reset - Phone Showing Half Directories As Empty
Oct 6, 2010Got a desire last night which was unlocked and rooted, got home and was getting an error about com.android.mms has stopped working so did a factory reset, not solved the problem but now have another one. Will the factory reset have unrooted my phone as cant work out how to install apps to my sd card, downloaded ES file explorer which does let me explore my phone but shows half directories as empty.

Feb 23, 2010I am starting to regret my purchase of the Samsung Moment, I dont know if its with the Lacking OS of 1.5 as I see 2.0 on the website the interface is different with the phonebook, the way the screen looks. I still have yet to figure out how really this phone is the "same" or compares to the IPhone ... in simple ways of application use, I still see my friends on their I Phones talking to millions of people with in a 5 mile range to a 100 mile range on all these social applications.With also that in talk of Applications why is it when i try to get a NEW! or POPULAR! application I have the wrong OS I am starting to think I should of held out for the Nexus unlocked cause I think that is the only one you can get that does everything. I was really hoping for a socialized phone not a traveling phone. I will say it is handy ,when you go into the store to compare prices or when you go on a long trip finding restaurants,gas stations and such but the I phone helps everyone connect and thats what I really would like to see a SOCIAL app for ALL android USERS together!
