Android :: Apps Installed To Card Won't Allow To Update
Jul 6, 2010
I put a few apps on my micro sd card (via phone mounted to pc over usb) then I opened astro and installed them on the phone. Apps work fine; but I can't update them? All it will let me do is buy them...? WTC?
The apps are 1)Beautiful Widgets 2)Office Suite 3)Switch Pro Widget
Phone: VZW HTC Incredible
Anyone know what the problem is? These apps all show update available but when I go into the market to let the apps get updated it won't let me; all it will let me do is buy...?

I have alot (and I mean ALOT) of apps on my Xperia, so I get around 5 app updates a day, which is now starting to agitate me because most of them are the same apps everyday needing updates.
Today I heard about an update for the market that includes an auto update feature for installed apps. But I, like many others, do not see this option on the market.
Does anyone have any idea how to get it? or if I can't get it, when can I?

I am working on an app that will be shipped on some phones. I have been thinking about how to update them once a new version is ready. How that would work for a pre-installed app? As an initial thought I think I could pop up a message letting the user know there is a new version ready, but if I could avoid unnecessary request to the server it would be better. If a google engineer comes across this please give me a hint as you do this for Google Maps.

When you install an app to the SD card, what is the name of the folder or directory it goes to? I have Astro file manager and when I use it to look at all the folders on the SD card, I don't see any folder that remotely looks like it would be the one. I have opened up all folders that I don't know what's in them and I don't see the apps. Unless I'm missing something. Has anyone figured the name of the folder containing these SD card installed apps?

Not sure if this is an issue with the ROM I'm using (Sapphire 1.0), ADW Launcher, or just an issue with Android. Any app I have installed on SD doesn't show its icon. Example, I had a shortcut to Vignette on my home screen. Once I moved it to SD it no longer showed the little Camera icon, just a generic Android icon. This happened with every app I moved.

My original phone kept shutting off and then wouldn't boot into the Android OS, so I took it back to Verizon today and they replaced. They swapped out the SD card from the original phone and put it into the new phone. Here is the interesting part, two of my apps were on the new phone without me having to go to the market and download them again. Shopsavy and Robo defense free were both on the new phone right at the start up of the new phone, leading me to believe that full apps can be installed to the SD card? The only thing I could think of to explain them being back on my phone but not on the SD card would be that part of the program was on the SD card and when it booted up it say the .exe for the program wasn't there so it went out automatically and downloaded them again without me giving the phone permission to do so. I don't think I'll hit the 256 max anyways but considering the concensus is that you can't save the entire app to the SD card I found this interesting.

Once I download an apk and place it on sd, and install it with astro file manager, does the apk have to stay on sd card or is it permanently installed to system until deletion?
For example my SuperUser.apk, wireless tether.apk and swype.apk were installed from sd through astro. I also have these apk's backed up with titanium backup. If i delete them from sd will they be removed and uninstalled from my system?
Also... I did a nandroid backup with the great clockwork recovery. This only backs up ROM and not apps/apks....right?

So I did a hard reset of my Vibrant a few days ago (delete user data). I was able to reinstall most of my apps very easily because the market still had them listed in the downloads section. The only problem is, the preinstalled apps were all reset to their original versions, and I can't update them. The two that I'm concerned with in particular are Google Maps and T-Mobile My Account. If I look at them in the market, the only control available is "Open". "Uninstall" is greyed out and disabled. Basically, the market thinks that I already have the latest version installed, even though I don't, so it doesn't give me the option to update. The My Account app is completely broken. If I try to run it, it just sends me to the market saying that I need to update it. Then of course, the market doesn't give me that option, so I can't use the app at all.

On the ROM update details, its states
Warning!
* Please note that this upgrade will erase any data stored on the phone. We recommend that you back up all your data before performing this upgrade.
what will be lost, contacts? photos? apps installed? im guessing SD card data will be unaffected.

Does anyone have trouble with getting updates for Apps you have moved to the SD Card? I seem to have to move the Apps from SD to phone, update, and then move phone to SD. Is there a way to get updates for the Apps that are on the SDCard automatically?

I've noticed this since I've updated to Froyo (many weeks ago) but I don't know if it's related to Froyo or just some random coincidence. Whenever I update an app that's stored on my SD card I get the "Failed to install application" error. It's easy to fix just move the app to the phone, but it's kind of a pain in the backside. Is there an easier fix? Or should I just keep all apps on the phone and use the SD for photos and music or something?I have a non-rooted HTC Incredible.

I've had my HTC Desire for about 2 weeks. I have searched through the forums for info...but between threads getting off track or just not understanding anything, I thought it would be easier to ask basic questions about my particular issues.
1) What is root? I have the 2.2 update, I am happy enough with HTC and my carrier (Telus) and I don't need tonnes of room right now.
2) Speaking of room, I try to put my apps on my SD card with the 2.2 update but only Google Earth and Night Sky are able to do it. All of my icon packs etc. wont go to SD. I'm pretty sure I have lots of room left so I dont think this is a huge issue.
3) Battery issues. I didn't do the first full charge as I had to use the phone asap when I bought it. I don't have much going on with my phone, no active wallpapers, just weather toggle and clock, text and a few phone calls, check a couple websites, maybe a video here and there, and sometime use GPS for maps. I keep my screen on zero percent and I soft touch the power button to go black screen when i'm idle. I turn off gps and wifi when not using them. With that said, I cant keep the phone idle and off charge overnight without it going to zero. After a charge I lose 10-20% in the first hour. I have never lasted a day on a full charge.
4) After playing around with customizing my phone with icons and widgets I am done. All I need this phone to do is make phones calls, text and check my favorite websites. I use my tracks when I go running and listen to music when I run. Thats all I want it to do. Its a phone so I would love if it could keep a charge in case of an emergency. I was late for dinner the other night because my battery died and I couldn't even call to say I was late! so....
5) What do you recommend I do with my phone to keep it as basic as possible and powered up?
6) What are the key apps to make this the best user experience?
7) When in my pocket I lock screen but once I found that I had 23 unsuccessful attempts to open screen from jiggling around in my pocket lol. Is there anything to help me with that?

I updated the phone to 2.1 earlier, but it's still at 1.6... when I connected to PC Companion prior to the 'update' it said my phone was up-to date so I'm convinced I didn't actually update anything?
When should I be prompted that an update is available via PC Companion? because when I look in the phone settings and check for updates it says there's one available, but not on PCC?

I have recently purchased an unlocked HTC Desire. As you may or may not know, here in Australia the only carrier of the Desire is Telstra. However I use 3 mobile so that's the reason I purchased an unlocked device.
My problem is that my phone has about a dozen or more apps which are installed by Telstra and uninstallable. Most of them are 100% useless because I'm not even on their network and I'd like them out of my applications list.
I've had a read around and I saw something about being able to remove them by deleting the file and then uninstalling them using a command prompt program.
Would anyone please be able to give me detailed instructions on how to do this because I'm not sure how to find the system/apps folder and I'm also not sure on how to get the command prompt thing to work.

I did a dumb thing. First, I installed Angry Birds (this was not the dumb thing, by the way, unless you count how much of my life it has consumed) and then moved the app to the SD card. The dumb thing was that a while later I was charging my phone via my computer (and I was in Disk Drive mode) and I went to play the game. Well, the icon was wrong and the game wouldn't play, so I panicked thinking that I might have lost all my progress. I went out to the market and re-downloaded the game. Whew! All my progress was still there.Later the whole you-just-couldn't-access-your-SD-card-at-the-moment-you-idiot thing sank in and I realized I had the app on both the card and in phone storage. So I went into Applications and tried to move it to the SD card, but I got an error (presumably because it's already there). So now it's taking up room in phone storage and I don't want it to. I'm afraid if I uninstall the app completely that I really will lose my progress. Any suggestions?

I have big files to integrate into my application (videos), and thus for not not that my application occupies all the internal memory of the telephones, I saw that it was possible with Froyo to install the applications on the SD card.
I thus have to test this solution and my application settles down well on the SD card, the only problem it is that the system installs all the same my files videos (which are placed in the file /raw) on the internal memory of the telephone. Thus my question it is where to place my videos or where to make so that these also settle down on the SD carde ?

I did an app called "Hello Yahoo" and today I made an update. But users said it can't be installed because the package is not signed correctly. And after that the old version can't even be uninstalled because the device thinks it is uninstalled already. I never experience that, but it is reported by many users. I do use a different keystore to sign it with the update. Is this the case? How can I fix this?

How can I get the version information of the current installed apps on my phone. if I do : Package Manager packageManager = getPackageManager(); List<PackageInfo> packs = package Manager. getInstalledPackages(0); int size = packs.size(); apps += " Total apps = "+ size+" "; for (int i = 0; i < size; i++) { PackageInfo p = packs.get(i); apps += "App name: " + p.applicationInfo.loadLabel(packageManager).toString(); apps += "Package name: " + p.packageName; apps += "Version name: " + p.versionName; apps += ""; } tv.setText ("Installed apps:"+apps); I get all the apps currently installed. I wasn't able to figure out how to extract their correspondent version information.
