Android :: Application Doesn't See High Density's Images / Fix This?
Sep 3, 2010
My project contains three drawable's folders: drawable-hdpi, drawable-mdpi and drawable. I build it with android:minSdkVersion="3". When it runs on Andriod 1.6 or higher it always uses images from drawable-mdpi on high density screens.
How to fix this?

I read the official document about supporting multiple screens http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
According to that document, I should just create different directories for different resolultion.
Now the question. How to support devices with normal screen and high density or low density?
I ask it because, there are two posibilities (WVGA800 (480x800) and WVGA854 (480x854)) and (WQVGA400 (240x400) and WQVGA432 (240x432)) and I don't know where to store some background images for them.
I would take drawable-normal-hdpi or drawable-normal-ldpi, but how to make difference between 480x800 and 480x854 or between 240x400 and 240x432?!

I am running my application in the emulator using a high density skin (like WVGA800). However the ressources in my application are loaded from the drawable- mdpi folder instead of drawable-hdpi ... what else should I do so that android use the correct folder ?

There are a few G1 users reporting that my app won't display images. I can only imagine this is because they don't have an SD card. My app is heavy on images. Is it appropriate to store images on the internal memory? I don't even know if there'd be enough space.

The Android documentation says that best practices are to make two drawable directories - one for HDPI and one for MDPI. It also says that if the MDPI directory doesn't exist and a MDPI device is running the app, it will scale down the HDPI ones so everything looks good. Is there any reason not to just make one high resolution set of graphics? One con that I can think of is performance issues and one pro I can think of is only having one set of images for your app.

I'm building a game with graphic assets in hdpi resolutions (hence I put the files in drawable-hdpi directory). I don't want to have a corresponding mdpi resolution of the images, and I will code everything in 240-dpi based pixel coordinates.
Is it possible to still allow mdpi and ldpi devices to run the application, by automatically scaling the graphics from the hdpi version? Optimize for high-dpi devices only but still support (small- and) medium-dpi screens.

I am a big fan of mythbusters and i'll bet that many of your are too. I like all those high speed camera shoots and i was thinking if would it be possible to make an app to use the camera to shoot high speed videos. I am not thinking like professional high speed video (those go up to millions of fps) but more like up to 1000 or 500. The desire should be able to shoot hd 720p video (lets hope with the next update) and may be would be possible to to make lower resolution high speed videos. I think the cpu is enough, but would the camera be able?

My speaker buzzes all the time on my phone (not the speaker phone - it works fine). It's not a network buzz, it's a vibration buzz of the metal or speaker. The center camera is also off-center a little bit, which makes me think something up there is off-center, misglued or loose.
We have two other evos and neither of them buzz on the same call. I called the Sprint Nav Voice Address thing from all 3 phones since that would be the exact same voice and words every time. Only mine buzzes. The other two don't have the camera problem either.

I'm just looking for some insight into what would be the best way for me to store images as part of my app. I have an activity that represents a 'Job' which has a couple of edittext's and underneath was planning on using the Gallery component to show images relevant to this job. The job data is stored in a database (on the sdcard) so was also thinking of creating a table to store 'JobImages' and having each image stored as a byte array.
But I'm not sure if it would be better to store the images directly on sdcard under a folder structure specific to my application and the job. E.g. using the job ID number as a folder name. Depending on which method I use will greatly determine the code that goes into an 'adapter' that allows me to bind to the gallery component so before I begin I was wondering if anyone has had the same design problem and what option they chose.

The press the screen and the images switch randomly. I purchased the ebook "Professional Android Application Development" and have torn though it. I am stumped. I'm thoroughly confused at this point. Any ideas on where I can go or how I can accomplish this?

I'm using Eclipse on Windows to develop Android application. So when I'm trying to run the app, the system outputs to console
CODE:............
starts the emulator, but doesn't upload the .apk and doesn't start the activity. So, app is not started anyway.
I found a "solution" here, but it's unclear and seems to not work. For example, I don't know, which "emulator processed" are meant to be killed. I found adb.exe only. And that's the main point: sometimes I'm lucky enough to kill all that they wanted and start the app. But it's undetermined.

I'm basically using the same method of loading bitmaps in OpenGL that the SpriteMethodTest example uses and have been unable to get rid of an annoying outline that appears around all of my images.
For example, If I were to load an image of a white circle on a white background, I would expect to see nothing. Instead, I would see my circle because its edge would be gray. In SpriteMethodTest, I replaced the background image with white and was able to see that the edges of the android images flying around also don't seem to be rendered correctly.
Does anyone know how to load images in OpenGL without having a thin outline appear around the images?

How can I make it so that my application is seen on the Android Market only by devices with mdpi and hdpi densities. There is the <supports-screens> tag and there is the anyDensity parameter but I don't see how I can say what I want. If I set anyDensity to false, what does that mean? Where do I specify which densities I do support?

I'm working to convert some background images to nine patch so they scale better on different phones.
The problem is that if I have the following resource structure: drawable-hdpi/background.png drawable-hdpi/button.png drawable-mdpi/background.png drawable-mdpi/button.png drawable-ldpi/background.png drawable-ldpi/button.png and then I drop a new drawable-hdpi/background.9.png file into the mix, it breaks button.png during the pre-compile. The error is "No resource found that matches the given name (at 'background' with value '@drawable/button').Simply removing that one nine patch file fixes the build. Should I be able to have some nine patch images and some normal ones, or to have nine patch only in hdpi but not mdpi or ldpi? This is Eclipse 3.5.1 with the latest ADT.

Just switching to the Eris Droid phone and like it for the most part...what I don't like is it's email client. The GMail one works nicely, however, the Mail that comes on the phone doesn't allow you to select multiple messages and delete them..like outlook or the versamail client on a Palm device.
