I've got a Sprint Hero with Android 2.1 (.6 and not .5 as required for unrevoked). All I want is root access (no custom roms) for some applications (mainly WiFi tether). I'm a complete noob to rooting and what I gathered from the guides is that all data is erased. Is there any way (regardless of how complicated) such taht I don't lose any data/apps and just gain root access?

I went from a stock 1.5 to 2.1 using the Sprint 2.1 RUU and all is well. I understand it's a dev build and as such is already root but when I trying installing android-wifi-tether (both 2.0 and 1.6) it all looks well except when I touch the icon to start and it fails. The 1.6 version did report I didn't have root.
What do I need to do in ADB/shell to ensure the proper permissions are there for AWT? This is the last thing I want to get working and I'm happy.
Do I need to remount the filesystem as rw? Add superuser? Not sure what's needed.
i have searched, for list of decent roms for sprint hero w google cdma, ive found older posts but not very informative, want something to speed it up, function a little better mainly just wanna mess with my phone till i find something better. if there is a list of good ones out at the moment, pics would be helpfull also, and links to were to get them.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have rooted my hero and am currently running fresh 1.1 ROM, and I got the wireless tether for root users and its been working great until last night. I was having extremely slow speeds and was going to try disconnecting and reconnecting but as soon as I disconnected, my phone rebooted. Now, every time I go into the wireless tether for root users app, it force closes. What the Hell am I supposed to do? I need this to work.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling several times, tried changing encryption status but nothing seemed to make a difference. If anyone has any thoughts that may help I'd be glad to hear them.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running basic Sprint 2.1 rooted. I've removed all the bloatware, and wireless tether is working great. Pretty much everything is working great, actually, aside from the standard dialer and contact lag many people have reported, plus occasional lag in other areas.
So here's my question: Is there a custom ROM out there that solves the lagginess problem while leaving everything else basically functional and intact? I've been reading the threads around all the various ROMs, and while it seems that some offer real advantages in various areas, it also appears that each introduces its own new set of problems and dysfunctions. While I'd love a snappier phone, I don't want a bunch of new bugs, worse battery life, whatever. I mean, based on the threads here, the average custom ROM user's experience would seem to be slightly worse than my experience with the standard Sprint release.
1. Are there any other roms for lg ally besides velocity and stock roms?
2. I read somewhere that you can install a different phone stock rom on the lg ally to make it look like that phone? ( Ex. Droid stock rom on lg ally; can you do that)
3. Are there any wireless tethers for Velocity 0.3 that work?
4. Are there any 2.2 froyo roms for ally?
Finally going to make the root leap on my D1 today.
I have some pretty specific and limited needs and I have been reading EVERYTHING on rooting for the last two weeks and still don't have a clear idea on a few tidbits.
Here is what I hope to achieve by rooting:
1. Wireless wifi tether
2. Improved battery life
3. Eliminate my wifi problems that came with FRG01B OTA
4. Be AT LEAST as smooth and fast as my current setup
5. Be AT LEAST as reliable/bug-free as my current stock Froyo
I am entirely satisfied with the look and feel of my device so I don't NEED to have any themes etc...
I know through research that some ROM's provide easy wifi tethering and some do not. I need one that does since that is my prime requirement.
I am also concerned about the new OTA this week screwing up my root access before or after I root the device.
In reading a bazillion threads everyone keeps saying that each phone is unique in what ROMS/Kernels the phone will "like" which I find quite baffling honestly...but I guess you all know what you are talking about.
I would not even change ROM or kernel if I can achieve my 5 requirements, but from what I see, I do need to change my ROM at the least.
Any recommendations on which ROM's to try? Please note any ROM that does not allow easy wifi tethering is a waste of my time.
I already have ROM Manager, SetCPU and Titanium Backup all queued up on APPBrain for me and I will be pulling the trigger on this today.
I have read all the instructions on rooting the "hard way" and the "easy way" and my time is very valuable so I will use easyroot or the other one...Universal Androot.
Sprint Hero rooted phone on stock ROM. Is there a simple way to move applications to the sd card without using a custom ROM? As the phone memory is junk. Also, is there a custom ROM out there for froyo 2.2 w/ sense?

What is the best way to tell if you lost your root access? I updated my from darch 2.7 to 2.8, and just wanna make sure all is still good. I did it from the Darch updater via my phone. The adjust brightness program that that requires root access works but wireless tether doesn't seem to work. Does my have to be a certain level for the tether to work? It was at 14 percent or some thing like that.

For example, when I open setCPU, it says "No root access detected. Are applications allowed access to root? Operating in read-only mode." How do I fix this?

1. How do I know If there is an update for the specific root I used? and to update will I lose everything?
2. I can't seem to get usb tether to work. pdanet works but I want all access. the wired-tether-root program. It runs on my Eris, but doesn't access the net. xp x86 and 7 x64. I have two root required wireless applications installed that work perfectly, I just want a usb app too.
3. If the rooted ROM I used isn't the best, can I get some opinions as to what to try?r making this possible for us all!

View 6 Replies View RelatedPlease read this before you assume I'm an idiot Anyways, so my thinking is, we can root our Droid X. This gives us access to every system file. amirite? If that's the case, shouldn't it be possible to literally replace everything using some super user priviledged apk? I know linux well, and I know some android development stuff, but I don't know anything about custom roms (on android at least) and how efuse works, so I obviously could be completely off base here.The only hitch I see would be that while the phone is running, many many many of these files are likely in use. It just seems there would be some way to close everything (and I mean EVERYTHING), with the phone still running, and replace all system files with a new set.Now I'm not entirely savvy on how efuse works, and I'm even less sure on how changing the system this way would, from efuse's eyes, differ from a full custom rom flashing, and if, if it did work, you'd still be bricked on the next reboot.Thoughts? I mean it at least seems that we could find a way to replace motoBlur.
