HTC EVO 4G :: Android WiFi Tether / Hotspot (for Root Users)
Jun 6, 2010
The best WiFi/BT tether/hotspot app out there has just added support for the EVO 4G about half an hour ago. Of course, root is required but it's just one click away with unrevoked. Forget Sprint's $30 a month tether - this one is free and supported by the community. This is why I love Android. All info here:
Rooted EVO 4G Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Free WiFi/Bluetooth Tether (Hotspot) As Android-wifi-tether App Adds Support For EVO

WPA2 + infrastructure = strong security and access for your Android devices and other devices that didn't support ad-hoc mode (WiFi, etc). Written by Andrew himself - the guy who developed most of the code for this to work on the EVO. Props Andrew! I have a droid X I just got not very long ago at all and a friend told me how to use the rooted version to play xbox live and things like MW2 online using the tether...so I think I rooted my phone it says it is.
I used androot and it seems to have rooted my phone however it does not ask me permission(yet i literally just downloaded it) now my question is this:
I have downloaded wireless tether for root users version 2.0.1(I am running 2.1 update1) I am not sure if that was the correct version...but I am online so I assume so.
How do I open the NAT settings on the wifi however? that is the whole point of me doing this charade and I cannot figure it out. I try to play MW2 online and it says they are strict.

i've been using the hotspot feature to deliver my carrier internet connection to my other devices at times when i'm not at home with the normal internet (often) sometimes i wish some of devices to not be able to temporarily connect, so i move them into the blacklist for a while; and while the feature to whitelist, blacklist and set user connection limit is cool, it has one major problem with it- there's only mac address labeling
it is not a problem if you fiddle with one device, but once you get more than 2 in the whitelist it's really impossible to remember all the mac addresses of all the devices... is there a way to label these devices?
or is there some app that could replace this native whitelist functionality but introduce labels? i am running 4.0.3 atm

I'm trying to tether using my Mac and Android Wifi Tether app but it has been unsuccessful so far.
It looks like there's an incompatibility between OSX and Android Wifi Tether.
Are there any alternatives for root users to tether using a Mac?

I am able to detect and connect to my phone with my computer. The problem is I cant get on the internet with it. It acts like its crunching away when I open the browser and then I get a "limited connectivity" pop up on the computer. The phone only shows like 3kb downloaded and 30k uploaded. Any ideas or is my connection just that slow? I am using bugles 0.8.6. on the droid.

I have rooted my hero and am currently running fresh 1.1 ROM, and I got the wireless tether for root users and its been working great until last night. I was having extremely slow speeds and was going to try disconnecting and reconnecting but as soon as I disconnected, my phone rebooted. Now, every time I go into the wireless tether for root users app, it force closes. What the Hell am I supposed to do? I need this to work.

Let me preface I love this app and am not really complaining, just have something that has come up. Anyone else experience it dropping the internet connection or wifi after about an hour? It works great up to that point and doesn't show an error or anything but it just stops communicating. I have to stop tethering and start tethering and its back up again. Its not a huge issue, just something that I would resolve if I could. It was happening on pre9 but I upgraded to pre13 and it still happens. Im on Myns RLS3 with Netarchy 4191bfs kernel but it was doing it on the stock HTC #10 kernel that came with Myns.

I successfully installed Unrevoked3. It was a breeze on a MAC.The main reason I did this install was to run Wireless Tether for Root Users. This is my first Android based device. What else will having Unrevoked3 installed allow me to do?

I've been trying to use Wireless Tether with my laptop and have noticed that it is extremely finicky. It usually works for a minute or two but then I can't load anything at all on my laptop. I'm not doing any heavy activity or anything, just browsing some websites, but it does this consistently. I have to toggle it off and on and reconnect my laptop before I can use the internet again. No error messages or anything, it just gets stuck at 0.0 kbps on my phone as if my computer isn't communicating with it anymore.
Does anyone have this problem or is this just a common limitation with ad hoc networks? Is there another solution out there? I'm using the leaked Froyo rom but noticed this with the official 2.1 rom too. Doesn't 2.2 come with built-in hotspot capabilities? I wouldn't mind using wired tethering either, but it looks like that won't happen until we can get a custom kernel?

I want to do is set up my HTC Incredible (currently running official HTC Sense/Froyo) as a wifi hotspot (not paying verizon $20 for 2GB/month, and not usb tethering.. need wifi).
Unfortunately, even though stock Froyo 2.2 supports free wifi hotspot, the official (un-rooted) froyo for the incredible forces you to pay $20/month to verizon to use as a wifi hotspot.
I'm assuming this is correct, but I just wanted to make sure: If I root my phone, then I will be able to install a rom and use it's built-in free wifi hotspot capabilities using my data connection, right?
Also, is there a rom that has HTC Sense, as well as free wifi hotspot capability? I would like to keep using HTC Sense over "stock" Froyo, and still be able to use free wifi hotspot capability if possible.

I"ve heard that you can root the Droid 2 to enable to use it as a WiFi hot spot. What steps I have to take in order to do this? I'm somewhat computer savvy, have written software in Visual Basic, C++ and a few other languages.

This is for all of you who are having troubles getting your application "Wireless Tether for Root Users" to work. I personally kept getting an error on which would say "Initializing WiFi Interface: Failed." I have since been able to get it to work. Here's how.
Disclaimer: Obviously you need a rooted phone for this to work, We're in Root forums for a reason. You will also need the Amon Recovery Partition.
Steps:
1. Boot phone into Recovery by holding Volume Up + Power (End Button).
2. Wipe phone of all data.
3. Flash to the 0_3 rom, install Astro File Manager from the Market
4. Download and install file from below and place into phones SD card.
5. Install from Astro by opening it in App Manger, Open up application and enjoy!
Wireless Tether!

I just want to know if I use the rooted final version of the OTA 2.2 blah.blah.6 does this kill wifi tether for root? This will help me decide if I want to do a rooted update, or flash back to stock and do the Sprint OTA. and wait for the rooting process to star anew.

I've got a Sprint Hero with Android 2.1 (.6 and not .5 as required for unrevoked). All I want is root access (no custom roms) for some applications (mainly WiFi tether). I'm a complete noob to rooting and what I gathered from the guides is that all data is erased. Is there any way (regardless of how complicated) such taht I don't lose any data/apps and just gain root access?

I am having issues getting the 2 wifi tethering programs to work correctly. I just rooted for the firstt time today. Both programs start up correctly and allow me to enable to wifi tethering but I can't get any device to see the wifi connection they are creating. I have tried both scanning for the network and trying to manually connect to it by typing in the SSID but I can't get any device to see the network. I am using a Droid X with the official 2.2 update rooted.

I recently rooted my EVO. I tried Barnacle Wifi Tether, which was connecting me at 11 mbps but was not able to view any web pages. I then tried Wireless Tether and was able to connect at only 11-24 mbps. I have had the Sprint Mobile Hotspot up until now, but was getting 54 mbps out of that.

I mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?

I feel like I have done enough reading on knowing how to preform the root on my phone, but I am just curious as to how I get different features like wireless tether, or any tether for that matter, without having to download easytether or PDAnet. Is hot spot even available on our phones?
Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?
I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit.

What are the differences and/or advantages to using Wireless Tether vs. "hacked" 3G Hotspot, which I've been seeing people talk about recently? I was under the impression that Wireless Tether is a free option for wireless hotspot capability - is using the hacked 3G hotspot less detectible or something?
