Ok, so I've been hearing alot about these custom roms and was wondring what it was. What can you do with a custom rom? And how do you create one? I am wanting this Sprint HTC Hero to run so much quicker then 528mhz I want something more snappy and less lagging. I don't know how to root my phone.

How to - create custom icons for folders or add shortcuts into App Organizer Groups
I've been playing around with the App Organizer, and been putting things into folders. However, I am trying to do a few things.
Add shortcuts into the groups App Organizer creates, and/or create custom icons for Folders I put on the Home pages.
For example, I have 6 mail accounts (don't ask) and want to put them in a group called mail. Using AppOrganizer, I can only organizer the main mail icon into the group, I want to add the 5 other shortcuts I created for each account. OR I group them into a folder, but I want to change the folder icon to an envelope.
Also, anyone know any good apps that puts email notifications on the top taskbar?
I've got a Sprint Hero with Android 2.1 (.6 and not .5 as required for unrevoked). All I want is root access (no custom roms) for some applications (mainly WiFi tether). I'm a complete noob to rooting and what I gathered from the guides is that all data is erased. Is there any way (regardless of how complicated) such taht I don't lose any data/apps and just gain root access?

My question is this, once I flash the custom rom and it boots up, does the phone work automatically just as when I updated from 1.5 to 2.1? I mean the phone functions, not the android operating system. As I said, this may be a silly question but I haven't seen it actually addressed in the forums.

Finally I figured out that the main problem was that I need to revert to the stock software (1.5). So I ran the HTC ROM Update Utility but for the past two times I got ERROR {140}: BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Yes, I've searched but came up with nothing.

I recently rooted my phone and was wondering how to install custom themes and lock screens for my hero. I am new to this as the title implies, so a link/instructions on how to install/create these would be what I'm looking for. I also am looking for solutions that do not need to install a new ROM as I just want to mod the current one that I have since i haven't found one I like. So I thought it would be good for all the information to reside in one thread and if people are still having problems then they should make a new thread. I understand that it is sometimes difficult to find the right instructions as there are conflicting posts / thread everywhere.

And also, some things to think about: remember that the Hero only runs class 2 speeds, even if the card is class 6. Do you think this will change once we receive Android 2.1? Because if not, I would imagine that the phone would be slow opening apps (assuming apps to SD will be available).I know that if they do program the Hero to allow class 6 speeds, and allow apps to SD (without root) then the Hero could run MUCH faster than it does now.
