Samsung Vibrant :: Manual Install Of Froyo
Aug 16, 2010
A buddy of mine just got the Vibrant and he was asking me if there is a way to do a manual install of Froyo rather than wait for the update. Could somebody direct me to step by step instructions if they are available? Would he have to root? I searched for a bit but didn't find anything specifically for the Vibrant.

This is the OTA JI6 not leaked, etc. It's super easy, don't be intimidated but DO read and follow the step by step instructions. rhcp 0112345 over at XDA has posted the OTA update JI6. Remember rhcp0112345 spent time and money to bring this update to us so it would be a nice gesture to donate $1 to his paypal if you avail yourself of his work. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?

Just got my new Vibrant delivered yesterday so now the questions start.
1. Is there a way to disable the automatic screen locking and allow me to just press the on/off switch to lock? There are many cases where I don't want the screen to lock automatically - eg. listening to music. But then when I put the phone in my pocket, case, whatever, I'd like to press a button to lock it.

I have a question for all you rooting mavens. How, if at all, will rooting my Vibrant effect the pending Froyo and TMO updates that are due out soon. Will the updates take place the same as if the phone was not rooted at all or must other steps be taken to take advantage of the pending updtates.

Given the success that most people are having using custom ROM's on their vibrant, I'd like to do so as well. I don't really see a benefit of waiting for and using T-Mobile's version if the current custom one's work just fine (and since I really don't care about having TouchWiz or not).
Having said that, which one would you all recommend? I hear great things about Bionix 1.5, Macnut R12, and TeamWhiskey's Onyx R4.2 (no TouchWiz, which I hear is a good thing especially if you have a decent alternative like LauncherPro). I really don't know the true differences between them all, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Ok I'm new to this rooting thing so bear with me. I want to root my vibrant but I have some questions. Does the one click root work? And how does it work? Also what does the lag fix do? And do I need a computer to use it? Will rooting and applying lag fix not allow me to get froyo? Again I'm sorry if these questions have been asked.

I just recently purchased a Samsung Vibrant and started to play with it. I downloaded all the necessary drivers and I rooted it using a method I found online here with success. After playing for a few days, I decided I'd take on the task of updating to Froyo.

I'm looking to buy a Samsung Galaxy S (the Vibrant from T-mobile) without a plan and just use it over wifi. I'm incredibly interested in the Froyo update coming "soon," but was wondering if I'll be able to install it via wifi, or if I'll need to activate a plan in order to get it. Anyone know?

The vibrant is advertised as 16gb internal memory, however after all of whatever is on the 16gb we're left with about 12.75 give or take of room left. Now i see that 2gb is apparently reserved for apps and the like, while the other is for music, movies, and so on. here is where my questions begin...
What if I have more than 2gb of apps and games to install? Will it not let me or will it partition more room? I think its kind of stupid to have a phone with this much internal memory and only let 2gb of it be for apps and games, that is absolutely stupid. I may consider activating my 14 day buyers remouse should this be the case. (and its not really 2gb, its 1.58gb)
I do plan on getting an 8gb+ class 4 or above microsd card, can i install apps to this WITHOUT rooting? or is rooting needed?I really, REALLY, hope im not screwed over with only 2gb of wiggle room for apps and games. that will definately put a halt on things.
I've just read this on android community.com.."When you say "only 2GB", this is plenty. Most apps are well under 5MB, so you can easily install 500 to 1000 apps on your phone.Android 2.2 is due out for these phones in September, which allows you to move apps onto the 14GB partition if you need/want to."Any truth to being able to move apps to the bigger partition? Becuase this would definately put my mind at ease.I also read that its not your choice if you can, the developer has to enable it in said application. so that it gives you a choice of where to save it, or you can move it at a later date.
I did notice, however, that Asphalt 5 was 8mb but required 103mb of additional data to be downloaded. i was worried it would save it to the whimpy 1.58gb of space but alas, it was smarter than that, and saved it on to the 12gb part. But if the option in all/certain apps is to save it to sd (or in the vibrants case, the 12gb partition sd space, or an external SD card) that would be HUGE.

Now the question I see it comes with avatar, having sold that p.o.s. tmobile htc hd2 winmo 6.5, is there a way of finding the transformer movies to install on vibrant, or is that unethical?

I promise i searched, but from my phone it's a bit limited. I manually updated to 2.2 at the end of August. However, earlier this week, I got the following message from Verizon. Should I pursue it, or will it brick my phone? If I don't do this, I'll likely hard reset my phone. I've been having a few hicups lately. Nothing to write home about, but still annoying. I've read that some suggest a hard reset after updating due to similar situations.

I did the manual upgrade to 2.2 Froyo last night and 2 applications have stopped working
-1) Ringo Lite is totally gone and will not install at all manually.
-2) Open Home is installed but cannot seem to make it stick as the default "home" application. Everytime I hit the Home button on my N1 it goes back to the 2.2 (froyo) default home screen.

I'm trying to install the leaked official 2.2 froyo update (I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low.exe) that I picked up from Cognition over on XDA but when I run the Odin one click downloader it hangs at <ID:0/006> Added!!
<ID:0/006> Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..
<ID:0/006> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/006> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
I removed the battery and restarted and flashed the factory ATT ROM and that worked fine. Why this is just hanging up on install. Seems everyone else who's downloaded it had no trouble. I've tried the file direct from design gears and also the mirror on multiupload.
