Ive been deciding between the nexus one and captivate, but I have come to the conclusion that I like the captivate way more hardware wise. My question is, will the captivate work on Rogers wireless? And if so, how would I go about buying an unlocked version?

I've had the Captivate since it came out, and it is now unlocked so it can work on Rogers. I'm not sure how to get the 3g working though...and I've already added the data plan to my bill...

Was going to buy a AT&T Pay As You Go Sim card for America, and something similiar with a Canadian Cell provider.
Can anyone confirm this will work?
I'm expecting that I won't get 3G access to work, but hopefully get voice/text and a GPRS connection at least?
I have the HTC Magic phone from Rogers (Canada) and I just recently unlock the phone. I�m planning to go on a trip in Europe where I can buy one of those Prepaid SIM card for GSM and use it with my HTC Magic phone. Since my phone is unlocked it should work. However, I understand the phone might operate on different frequencies on Nord America vs. Europe; the big question is, can the phone support the European frequencies? I was wondering if anybody had successfully used their HTC Magic in Europe.
View 3 Replies View RelatedCanada is incredibly close, and I'm going to be visiting it again in a week but the first time since having a smartphone. I'd like to leave the phone on for voice calls and wifi (I've researched and understand the per-min rates), but I want to guarantee that not 1 byte of data will transfer and incur me some obscene surcharge.
Here's my plan:
- Turn off "data roaming"
- Uncheck "background data"
- Uncheck "auto-sync"
- Using QuickSettings, toggle "APN control" (seems to do the same thing as the APNDroid and Toggle Data apps)
Have I covered all my bases?
I own a Samsung Galaxy S SGH-i896 and I decided to try and put on Cognition for a test, but before that, I did a android backup using ROM Manager. Now I thought this would save me in any situation...
So I flashed it over to Cognition, and it refused to connect to Rogers (as I expected) however, when I went to restore back, I would still get the AT&T start up, and the video was replaced by text that said "Android" in a weird font. I managed to flash it back to a stock AT&T ROM which worked well, but still wouldn't connect to the Rogers network.
I had tried to get into the ClockworkMod Restore Screen which I did finally get. I wiped all user data and cache, and restored from my backup...
Only to find my AT&T boot screen still there instead of the i896 screen and Rogers screen which would usually show. What can I do about this issue? Is there some kind of firmware or ROM from Rogers I need? I have a Rogers Stock firmware but that didn't seem to work either
I'm on the Rogers network in Canada (with a voice and data plan) but I cannot seem to get Skype Beta (version 1.0.0.5) to work. Every time I try to login I get this error: "Skype couldn't connect over your phone connection" I can use the same login/password on Skype on my computer and it works fine. Maybe I'm entering my phone number incorrectly? Has anyone on the Rogers network been able to get Skype to work?

I have the captivate and the iPhone 4. Since I can't find a way that works correctly to tether my 3G from captivate as a hot stop, I'm using my iPhone with mywi which makes my iPhone a wifi hot spot. I'm able to connect iPods computers and other devices to the iPhone 4 hotspot. But the captivate cannot find the wifi network I create
It's WEP with a 10 digit password. Does anyone know why it cannot find the network or how I can get it to work?
Cant seem to get my wiimotes to connect to my new Cappy, i dl the free versions of the market place but none work. My BT does see them just wont connect via the program. any ideas?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWell, my GPS was working alright, but I just need to know what I need for a lock. Recently, I checked, and it wasn't locking on, so I turned on the GPS Test application. I was connected to 9-10 satellites, each with the number 30 next to it, yet I wasn't locking in for some reason. I just don't get what I need in order to get the actual "lock" so that it works properly.

My current issue is i am trying to use both gmail and my work email in one button(the email accounts stock app ALMOST does this but it will not allow me to use gmail labels which i must have!). Even if i could live without the labels functionality it seems the gmail app is not only my gmail email but myh contacts/calender sync and perhaps even my app ordering account? Does anyone have any ideas for combining my work email with my gmail app while not losing any gmail functionality as well as garenteeing i dont doubel download/sync with the current gmail stock app?
I also have the GPS issue that most people are haveing... are there really people who do NOT have this issue? or are those without the issue not checking? It would seem that if some people dont have this issue it must be a hardware issue? I am quite concerned with this issue... i ave tried the fixes and some work untill i reboot a couple times then i return to an unsable state(settings have not changed)
So I was about to pick up a Captivate today until I spoke with the sales rep about my data plan. I am still using the 1st gen iPhone with the unlimited edge plan. He told me that there was no way for me to use the Captivate with the old plan unless I upgrade to the new ones.
I remember reading online awhile back that used the upgrade path from the 1st iPhone to any of the 3g iPhones, which makes it sound like he is BS'ing. I don't know if it still holds true for the Captivate though.
I have digital copies of a couple movies on itunes... Is there a way to get them to work on the phone? Whenever I try it days unsupported format.

Has anyone encountered a "Camera Failed" message after opening the Camera application? I tried rebooting many times (at least 5-6 times) hoping it was a software glitch, but would not go away. I was testing the GPS navigation (using Google Maps) and my battery drained from 60% to 30% in 20 mins!! Does using navigation or low battery charge screw up the camera?I was sure it was a HW defect thinking I had to return the unit, but when I got home, and plugged into wall charger for a few minutes, I found that camera started working again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI decided to try Kies again. I set it up and hard set my USB connection on the phone to Samsung Kies. I plugged in my phone and didn't even get the notification from Windows that a USB device was plugged in.I unplugged the phone and plugged it back in, this time watching the phone. A very quick message popped up on the phone that said"PC connection available only in idle screen.Close running applications."I checked TasKiller and there wasn't anything running.I scratched my head for a minute and then on a hunch used Home Switcher to change my default and running home screen to TouchWiz. I plugged/unplugged my phone and it worked! It said "MTP application", gave the USB symbol and connected.I then switched my home screen/Launcher to LauncherPro and tried it. It failed like ADW did with the same error! I'm not sure what gives there, but it's something you may want to investigate if you're having trouble using an MTP application like Samsung Kies.

View 16 Replies View RelatedFor those still struggling with this, or those just getting this phone and encountering issues, I have a solution for you (that I have not seen posted thus far, and with 90% less black magic - just average, everyday Office blood, sweat, and tears).
If you are just trying to get your contacts, and you can't get Kies to work, try this:
Go to your contacts in Outlook, then selects the contacts you want (ctrl+click if you just want certain ones, shift+click to mass selects, etc), then right click and go to "send full contact" and then "in internet format", and then send the email to yourself. Go to the email, save the contacts you wanted someplace you can find them.
After this, make sure your Captivate is either in "Mass Storage" connect mode or in "ask me" mode. Plug your phone in with the USB and open up the phone in explorer. In another window go to where you saved all those .vcf files and then copy them all to your phone.
Unplug your phone when you are done, then go to your contacts app. Open the menu->more->import/export->import from sd card->phone-> and then whichever option you want (I'd go with all).
Spent 5+ hours trying all the different suggestions (and every different permutation of settings and procedures I could derive from the various programs and dark rituals suggested) before I finally figured this one out. Hope this helps others - it preserved my contacts, pictures I had assigned them, phone numbers, birthdays, etc, without manually entering them for a day or two, or being forced to sync them with gmail (preventing me from giving them custom ringtones...) and saving me any more headaches with 3rd party programs or Kies or any other ridiculous witchcraft.
Anyone else having issues with Wireless Tether just freezing now? I uninstalled it and am going to try and reboot and see what happens.
