I'm new to Android. I recently was an iPhone fan but thought that Android was a better alternative to iPhone. So anyway, I have a few questions about the Captivate. Does Android have support for apps that you can use to password protect certain apps on the phone? Like messages, and photos for more private stuff. Another question I have: is the Captivates reception really bad? I currently have the iPhone 4 while it doesn't have the best of signal, its not too bad either. And my last question is if the captivate has support for 32gb cards. I'm sorry if someones already gone over these but I could find anything right away. Anyways, I look forward to Android and the Captivate.

Do the apps get stored on the internal SD card on the phone? Or on the section where it says Internal phone storage?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just rooted my phone and got carried away deleting apps. I am not the quickest when it comes to computers so I started deleting everything in red. Yes I really did do that. Now I cannot download. I cannot use my dialer. I think I deleted up to about C before I said uhoh I may be in trouble here. I rooted because I hate the phone. I liked my iphone better as it was quicker and had better email. Those are my main two things. Figured if I rooted I could get rid of the lag and set up a better email. Well here I am. I need help or this thing will be taking a jump out my truck window soon. Help me like this phone please.

But they don't mention whether or not they've disabled app sideloading and unsigned apps.
Im still learning a ton about the android OS and I have a dumb question. Are there apps the Android market that is made for a rooted phone only. Reason im asking is because I saw something on there but it looks like its made for a rooted phone only and I dont wanna risk screwing up my phone over it.

in about a month or so my cntract will be up and I was woondering bfore I buy the samsung captivate from att if it can download third party apps without havng to be rooted this will determine wether I get it or not because I nd wireless tether for my house I had it on my windows htc pure so.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe Captivate (and Galaxy S in general) all come with Swype, right? But Swype isn't a market app right now, right? As in, the HTC Aria can't get it unless it is rooted/worked around (not too hard, but a hassle)
So is the Captivate the only phone on AT&T that can officially have swype? We all know that Apple won't let Swype in their market

I herd of the side app loader wonder machine but I cant find the driver for my phone when I hook it up to my computer. Where can I download the driver for my phone and get the sideloader to work on my phone.

How can I get all of my apps onto her phone? If I put my sim card in hers and sync w/ Appbrain will it install all of the apps I have on mine? If I put her sim card in my old Captivate and sync her Appbrain account will that erase my old apps and install hers?

I downloaded a few apps on my first phone and everything showed up with an icon just like magic. Now I am trying to download a few free games for my kids to play and they will not download. I use the gmail app for my mail, and I am trying to minimize my data usage and everything so I've done the WiFi sleep policy setting, but after I went to bed, I woke up all of these running:

Email
Voice
Gmail
Twitter
Gallery
Music Player
Video Player
Granted, I don't think gallery/music/video uses data, but still. It seems weird that they just decide to start up. Is there any way to BLOCK applications from starting up unless I do it myself? Or at least a way to make sure they don't use the data network unless I say? I have ATK, but they still start on their own randomly.

I read the sideloading sticky, and came out more confused than ever.I am a current Tilt2 (Winmo) user, and am considering buying a Captivate.Are you only able to install apps that you download through Marketplace? If so, is there any simple way to get around that? My boyfriend has a Sprint Samsung moment, and all you have to do is use Astro file manager to install apps which you have saved to your SD card.Is this not true on the Captivate?I definitely would not want to purchase a phone that doesn't allow third party apps.

I had Pandora playing and then I clicked the headset button and got the music player going along with Pandora and dropped a call. I would consider that some serious software rule conflicts.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got a Captivate on the Rogers network here in Canada and I have some questions about some weird things I've noticed.
1. Some apps don't show updates when there are updates availableI use AppBrain and when I log in it says there are updates available for the following: Street View, Maps, Movies, Vlingo Voice, and Layar.I checked the version numbers of what is installed on my phone and what's in the market and sure enough the market versions are newer.However, when I open the Market application it doesn't show those applications in the list of downloads (and so no available updates).Also, if I go to the app page for Google Maps for example it shows an Install button, not an update button or "Installed".I use these apps so I know they're installed.What's going on?Is it because they came pre-installed?Can I safely update them through AppBrain even though the Market doesn't even show them as installed?
2. I can't find the Google Car Home app.I have searched via the Market and AppBrain and can't find this app anywhere.
3. Duplicate entries under Accounts and Sync.When I go to Accounts and Sync under settings I have two Facebook entries (both the same Facebook account though) and two Twitter entries (both the same Twitter account though).If I go in to each entry they have different settings. For example, one Facebook entry has just "Sync Contacts" while the other has "SNS setting", "Sync Contacts", and "Sync Calendar".Same with the Twitter entries. Why are these duplicates here?Also, when I go in to some contacts they have duplicate linked contacts from Facebook. So I have one contact who under linked contacts shows two linked contacts, one says it's from Facebook, the other says "Unknown" but I know it's also from Facebook since it has their Facebook picture (and they only have a Facebook profile and aren't in any other service like Google or Twitter).
If I use Titanium to back up apps to external sd, have my app list on appbrain and have my contacts in gmail, could I safely do a hard reset and get everything back to the way it was?
