When I select the power button to bring the phone out of sleep the phone screen will turn off within a second or two. Is there a way to keep the screen on longer? If I press power and look away for a second the screen goes black again. Its liek I have to hit power and jump right on it to enter my swipe code.

I am new to smartphones and thought that this might be good for others who are new and don't have the unlimited data plan grandfathered in to know.

By default the wi-fi setting is set to go to sleep (and use cellular data instead) when the screen is off, which will most likely happen while you are streaming music as well as other things. To change it so the wi-fi never turns off, to into the phone's menu -> wireless and network -> wi-fi settings -> tap the menu button and select advanced which has an option for wi-fi sleep policy that had been defaulted to sleep "when screen turns off". There you have the option to change it to "never" or "never when plugged in".
Anything you guys can think that could help? I've searched around, and found that holding down VOLUME DOWN and Power lets you hard reset the phone, but this doesn't work for me. I hold them down, and the phone just boots up like normal and then shuts off.I rooted it, and it was working fine. Rebooted a few times and then it quit working.

This is my second Captivate as my last one would shut itself off randomly and that phone also had this problem.Yes, I make sure I pressed the power button and waited a couple seconds to make sure it just wasn't lag but I can guarantee you it is not. Like I said, it doesn't happen all the time but maybe once every 2 days. I'm guessing it's a slight problem with other users as it happened on my last phone but I'm not sure. Hopefully it's a software issue.
View 11 Replies View RelatedTried rooting so I started off flashing r8 of bh_man's 1.6 rom. Went through the setup, odin turned blue to pass and I let the phone run past the android system and then the screen turned off.
Thing about it is that the phone is still being detected by the computer and odin. It's like my phone is on a screen lock but not responding to when I push unlock.
Ive tried every custom rom and each one does the same. I try to go back to stock and most of the time the program closes, when it doesn't I try to flash it and it goes through the process but goes on forever. One time I let the timer go on for 2 hours and it was still on 5/9 completed.
Is there an LED light on the Captivate to notify of email, missed calls, texts when the screen is locked or in sleep?

The power button will not turn it on. any help anyone can give me its reallllly annoying update. 1) Wifi worked great for a while, but now it says unable to scan for networks and turns the wifi off...this wouldn't be too bad if I had a big data plan but I do not.
2) Battery Life...fml
3) I cannot find ANYWHERE any supporting software to sync media files with my PC
4) The drivers will not install on my computer
5) Way too many apps are using data without me even opening them (navigation, yahoo mail etc...) I have AdvAppKiller but that gets old
It is wonderful having such a wonderful, fast device with 16 gb of memory, but these shortcomings are making me realize why I enjoyed a flip phone for so long.

I'm assuming I can't get any notifications (i.e. Instant Messenger clients, Google Voice, etc.) while the 3G is off, but not sure. I killed all tasks with advanced task killer as I do throughout the day as well. I don't use the email program on my phone nor do I get any notifications for any other programs. My Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to never because I have Wi-Fi at home. Brightness is at a low setting too. What is your take on the WiFi sleep policy. I do like the fact that Wi-Fi can remain on all the time, but will it be a drain on my battery? Is it better to keep the Wi-Fi to sleep on screen shut off? I am near a Wi-Fi connection for most of the day and always at home.

During a call, when I put the phone by my left ear, my ear and/or my cheek touch the screen, and though one would expect the buttons on the touch screen to be disabled during a call, when held against the ear and the face, I keep accidentally hanging up calls or in some other occasions, muting, having frustrated monologues to myself, thinking that the other person is ignoring me...
I mentioned using the left ear, because, it seems to have always happened when I held the phone by my left ear and not when I held it by my right ear.
I'm trying to find a more elegant solution, as dropping numerous calls is not an option. (today I dropped more than 15 calls). Any suggestions?
I am new to this forum, I came looking for help with the barnacle app and found a great forum for everything android, I am sure it will come handy.My problem is that my barnacle app disconnects when the phone screen turns off. I stay connected to the barnacle wifi signal but no Internet, in the barnacle app I get connection errors, I just need to stop the service and restart for the problem to be fixed, this only happens when the screen turns off so now I have the screen always on when tethering but that is not good form the battery.I have auto killer installed, I tought that it was the problem, and that auto killer was turning off the service but I uninstalled auto killer and problem persists, I have no other task manager installed.

This problem only started after I bought JuiceDefender and I think I have all the settings set up properly so I'm not sure why this is happening. In the Android settings I have it set for a 30 second timeout, but for some reason my screen will fade brightness, but never go off completely.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter noticing my battery was draining quickly, and then after reading this thread, I installed Android System Info to see what was draining my battery so fast. I notice that whenever I would turn on WiFi, the phone will never go to sleep , regardless of what I set the WiFi sleep policy to. After turning off WiFi, the battery still drains heavily.
The WiFi will shut off after 15mins (if you set it to "When screen turns off" or "never when plugged in"). However it seems to keep the CPU on causing it to drain down the battery.
It would seem that whenever WiFi is enabled, the Android system process creates a partial wakelock that does not go away even if you turn off WiFi. The only way to resolve this is by powering off or rebooting the phone.
You can verify this in Android System Info by going into Battery-History-Other Usage-Partial Wake usage to see how much time the "Android System" process holding a partial wake.
I even did a factory reset on the device; and it is still happening so it doesn't appear to be any app that caused the issue. As I said, it works fine as long as I don't enable WiFi.
I already know of two users having this issue, but I'm wondering if folks having battery problems are going through this as well. Is anyone else having similar issues after using WiFi? I'm hoping someone will be able to identify what exactly is putting the wakelock on and we'll be able to find a fix for it. Other than not using WiFi at all or rebooting the phone after using Wifi.
Is this possible? Many times my phone is in a holding frame of some kind (cars) and the button on the side isnt easily accessed. Is there an app or a way that a simple tap on the screen can activate the phone instead of requiring pushing the button on the side?
