So after getting frustrated with the lag on my new blackberry torch, I've decided that I might get the captivate. The one thing holding me back is the messaging features (e-mail/texting). How do they compare to the blackberry? Also, does the captivate suffer from the same legginess issues with simple menu functions/app changes?

So, I'm currently a BlackBerry (9700, for the record) user, seriously considering switching to an android device. I'm sure everyone here can account for the various ways an android phone is superior to a BlackBerry, and I'm pretty familiar with them. What's been holding me back though, are the minor productivity tweaks a BlackBerry provides that seemingly don't have a match on android devices. Am I wrong on these? Have others made the jump and found no difference? Specifically: Dedicated hotkeys of sorts -- I'm a pretty heavy business user, so I make ridiculously extensive use of my calendar/scheduler. No matter what I'm doing at the moment, I'm able to jump to my calendar with a single button press and see my entire week's worth of appointments. If I need to add something, I can schedule an appointment in under 5 seconds all the way through. To be honest, that's probably the only hotkey I use, but the ability to do this in an instant no matter what's in my way is rather important for me -- are there any equivalents on android phones? Through my research I've noticed a lack of hardware hotkeys. Is there any software solution that could at least compare?.....
View 16 Replies View RelatedI will be purchasing the Samsung Captivate tmrw from the AT&T store after work. Planning to pay $379 for the no commitment since I'm not eligible for an upgrade right now. This will be my very FIRST Android phone. I have no experience what so ever. With that being said, I'm a big Blackberry user, and will be coming from the Blackberry Bold 9000. Is anyone here also an ex-blackberry user? How will the transition be? anything I'll be missing from the bb that wont be on the captivate? I love my blackberry, its a great phone, it does what I need with emails in a heart beat. It's just lacking a lot in multimedia and web browsing, and I'm sure I'm probably missing out on a lot of other cool stuff too especially since I'm paying $30 a month for data plan. Emails & Calendars are very important for me. How will the push email be on the Captivate / Android? I handle 4 email accounts with a mix of Gmail and non gmail. As far as calendars go, I have really bad memory so all my dates and important daily task needs to be in my phone. My brother has an iphone 4, it seems great and all, but not to offend anyone, the OS seems kinda "dumbed down" for kids. It seems to lack a lot of options and customization compared to all the options and choices I had on my blackberry. I've read a lot about how the android lets you customize a lot, so hopefully I'll be going in the right path.

It is used to run applets and applications written with Java technology on mobile devices. KVM must be installed by the manufacturer. It is NOT available for download or installation by consumers". Now Android has a customized virtual machine called DVM (Dalvik Virtual Machine). Can we compare it with KVM? Wonder if we can further reprogram DVM to incorporate features of KVM to run applets on Android? Same goes for Blacberry, is there a possibility?

What I really need is DateTimeUtilities.copyCal(source, dest), and I can write it myself, but I really hate writing functions like this only to find it already exists but I just didn't know. I am aware of clone(), but what I really need is to be able to easily change the timezone of a date without having to worry about DST etc myself.

On paper I feel that except for the Evo's slightly bigger screen the Galaxy S has better features including better screen technology, but as we've heard with some peoples' Evos there can be hidden issues. Any thoughts? I guess it's not really possible to do a side by side comparison yet unless someone has one of the handsets and travels to a country where they're selling the other one, or has had a chance to use a prototype.

I recently came over from using a Blackberry (and using the Blackberry Messenger app), and I am wondering what you all might suggest as an easy way to briefly send quick messages (not using SMS or email) that would be easy to set up on my end and for my Blackberry friends.Currently I do not have any chat systems or instant messaging systems set up (as never used any of that before), so I am hoping you can make your suggestions very simple to understand and set up. I'm somewhat new to all this technology, but I am anxious to learn.

However, I've never owned an iPhone, in fact, I never even used an iPhone. So I am curious as to how the Galaxy compares with Apple's product. View 15 Replies View RelatedI am starting to regret my purchase of the Samsung Moment, I dont know if its with the Lacking OS of 1.5 as I see 2.0 on the website the interface is different with the phonebook, the way the screen looks. I still have yet to figure out how really this phone is the "same" or compares to the IPhone ... in simple ways of application use, I still see my friends on their I Phones talking to millions of people with in a 5 mile range to a 100 mile range on all these social applications.With also that in talk of Applications why is it when i try to get a NEW! or POPULAR! application I have the wrong OS I am starting to think I should of held out for the Nexus unlocked cause I think that is the only one you can get that does everything. I was really hoping for a socialized phone not a traveling phone. I will say it is handy ,when you go into the store to compare prices or when you go on a long trip finding restaurants,gas stations and such but the I phone helps everyone connect and thats what I really would like to see a SOCIAL app for ALL android USERS together!

This values are normal for the I7500 ?
A big reason for getting the i7500 is for the 5MP camera, something the iphone/HTC is lacking but looking at the video from the i7500 (at the end of this review) Im rather concerned! Do you think this is the fault of Android? How does the video quality compare to the Magic for example?

I have been trawling around these forums for a long time, and firstly wanted to say thanks to all of those veterans around here passing on their knowledge - its guys like you that make this place work.I wanted to start an official screenshot thread - in part to compare, show off, and get ideas, but also in order to allow newer members to ask questions about certain home screen widgets, what does what, and how things can be made so pretty! It took me a long time and lots of research to get mine how it is, and it would be great if we can help others achieve this a little more easily. In particular, i want to thank Drakaz for his amazing work on Galaxo 1.6.3 - anyone who is using his firmware and has the means should seriously consider a small show of gratitude; he saved me oodles of cash by improving the galaxy to the point that when i was about to give up on it and buy a new phone i didnt have to as he make it usable. So without further ado, here is my overclocked Galaxo 1.6.3.1 Samsung i7500; any q's at all, feel free to shoot Btw, one last thing - i just thought it would be interesting to note that uploading these screenshots has mate me realise how truly awesome the Galaxy OLED screen is. My PC has an excellent high resolution LED backlit screen, but has no where near the contrast or vibrancy of my galaxy screen. On my PC the background and general theme does not look anywhere near as good as it does on my phone.

It was very simple, and I would keep info in it like a grocery lists and even passwords (for low-risk things such as forum passwords), etc. I'm sure there's something for Android that does the same thing, but has anyone else made the switch and found something similar?

Or will I need to mount the card in my computer and copy all of the photos and stuff she wants to save, let Android reformat the card, mount it in the computer and transfer the stuff back onto the card? I did have google sync for my calender installed and working; but since I mainly work on office 2010 beta, gsync doesnt work. So, i hadent noticed the gsync wasnt syncing with my calender. That being said is there a known way to get the data over? Phone service is terminated so it has to be done tehtering to the PC somehow..I was able to get contacts no problems there as I had them in many locations, but would like the notes also.
