Samsung Captivate :: Facebook Authentication Only In Android / Blackberry?
May 31, 2010
I have a mobile application and will like to have the authentication implemented either through the Application itself or through Facebook username and password. For example, if I have username and password of Facebook then one can login into the Application. I don't want to integrate the facebook completely only the authentication part. Is this possible?

I will be purchasing the Samsung Captivate tmrw from the AT&T store after work. Planning to pay $379 for the no commitment since I'm not eligible for an upgrade right now. This will be my very FIRST Android phone. I have no experience what so ever. With that being said, I'm a big Blackberry user, and will be coming from the Blackberry Bold 9000. Is anyone here also an ex-blackberry user? How will the transition be? anything I'll be missing from the bb that wont be on the captivate? I love my blackberry, its a great phone, it does what I need with emails in a heart beat. It's just lacking a lot in multimedia and web browsing, and I'm sure I'm probably missing out on a lot of other cool stuff too especially since I'm paying $30 a month for data plan. Emails & Calendars are very important for me. How will the push email be on the Captivate / Android? I handle 4 email accounts with a mix of Gmail and non gmail. As far as calendars go, I have really bad memory so all my dates and important daily task needs to be in my phone. My brother has an iphone 4, it seems great and all, but not to offend anyone, the OS seems kinda "dumbed down" for kids. It seems to lack a lot of options and customization compared to all the options and choices I had on my blackberry. I've read a lot about how the android lets you customize a lot, so hopefully I'll be going in the right path.

This is what the Java site www.java.com says: "KVM, the virtual machine for mobile devices, is the counterpart of JVM (Java virtual machine). It is used to run applets and applications written with Java technology on mobile devices. KVM must be installed by the manufacturer. It is NOT available for download or installation by consumers". Now Android has a customized virtual machine called DVM (Dalvik Virtual Machine). Can we compare it with KVM? Wonder if we can further reprogram DVM to incorporate features of KVM to run applets on Android? Same goes for Blacberry, is there a possibility?

Most of the questions on SO has been too generic, comparing iPhone, Android and Blackberry all at once. I want to ask your experience between developing on Android and Blackberry. From your experience as Java programmer: Android or Blackberry? Any other noteworthy checklists to share to Java programmers that want to choose whether to develop on Android or Blackberry?

Is there an equivalent Android class to the BlackBerry's DateTimeUtilities? What I really need is DateTimeUtilities.copyCal(source, dest), and I can write it myself, but I really hate writing functions like this only to find it already exists but I just didn't know. I am aware of clone(), but what I really need is to be able to easily change the timezone of a date without having to worry about DST etc myself.

I want to build an XMPP client on android, I've got it running perfect with authentication using Digest-MD-5, however when I try to convert it to X-FACEBOOK-PLATFORM it keeps failing. Could someone tell me why? I've attached the source code. I know it's something really small but I can't seem to figure it out. The source can be downloaded from.

So after getting frustrated with the lag on my new blackberry torch, I've decided that I might get the captivate. The one thing holding me back is the messaging features (e-mail/texting). How do they compare to the blackberry? Also, does the captivate suffer from the same legginess issues with simple menu functions/app changes?

My website uses Facebook Connect for authentication on the desktop and mobile sites. When a user clicks the Facebook button, the browser opens a popup window where the user can login to Facebook. When the user logs in, the window closes and messages the main window to go on.This works great on iPhone. A new window opens and is brought to the foreground. After logging in, brings the original window to the foreground. Everything is happy. On Android, the user experience sucks. Trying to be clever, Android opens a popup window on top of the current window. However, the login popup is completely zoomed out and the input boxes are tiny. Predictably, many users just close the popup and give up.How can I use the Connect JS library to force a real window to open, or at least force Android to make the login box presentable?

Sorry if this post is redundant but I've searched and couldn't realy find anything. My question is, is there a Facebook app that is more like the blackberry version? One that actually alerts you when there are new comments, notifications, messages, etc... It really sucks you have to go in manually and refresh to see what notifications you have rather than it just telling you when you do like the blackberry version does.

I just got the captivate (had the backflip) and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to upload photos to facebook. With the backflip it was so simple, take the pic, tap share, tap facebook.I tried that on this phone but when I do share my options are picasa, bluetooth, gmail, email, allshare, messaging and online locker. And when I log onto facebook through the website or app there is no option for uploading photos.I have googled this topic to death and find absolutely nothing.

I've had the phone going on two weeks this Sunday and I still can't get Facebook to sync the contacts. It always says: "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." I was wondering if anyone else had this problem but was finally able to get a sync to occur by doing some tricky steps or something?

I am using Facebook app on my new samsung captivate. I have set the refresh interval at 30 minutes. and notifications checked (active). i have chosen messages, Pokes, Friend Requests and event invites all checked green under notification settings. For some reason, whenever i receive a friend request, i dont get notified under my notification bar. I always see that when i open the application. I was hoping to get notification without opening the app. do i need to do something to fix this? Or am i missing something very basic here.

I've had the Captivate for about 2 months now and during that time, I've never once got the contacts to sync up with my Facebook contacts. I've been to AT&T and they've told me that the phone is so new that they don't even know how to fix it.
What it's doing is taking at least two minutes to try and "sync" and them I'm getting a notification telling me that the sync is down at this current time and should be up shortly. I'm thinking two months is a little longer than shortly.

I just got the Samsung Captivate 3 days ago and I love it. I have been doing research trying to figure out all the little ins and outs to this phone. There are a few things that im stop not 100% clear about and would like for you guys to shed some light on this situation for me.
1. What is Launcher Pro and how exactly is it used.
2. Is there anyway to get push notifications with emails and facebook. Im always having to check my email to see if I have any.
3. What happens when I fill up all 7 pages with apps? Will I not be able to download anymore?

I have my Google contacts linked to their applicable Facebook contacts. I don't like that, when the names are different, it defaults to listing the contact under Facebook name. That means that it is no longer possible to search by Google contact name from within the phone application.
Anyone know if there is some way to override this?
