I just got the Captivate this weekend and I'm noticing at my house i am getting poor signal strength. It runs anywhere from around -100 to no service what so ever. I have been on AT&T for years and have had no trouble with my blackberry that gets around -75 to -80.
I bought the nexus one and had the same issue with that phone so i sent it back thinking it was a hardware issue.

I just traded in my Captivate earlier today, and maybe its my imagination, but I think my signal strength is weaker than the last phone. Maybe It just needs to warm up, or maybe I've elevated the last phone in my memory, but I seem to be getting less bars, even in open areas.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had 1.25hrs of talk time use 60% of my battery. Not a good sign. Also, the reception has been very unstable, wavering between 1 and 3 bars all over town. My cheap Nokia go phone I was using had 4-5 bars everywhere. The wi-fi signal appears to show less bars than my other phones.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from a Moto Droid due to its dropping call constantly. I have a Dinc now but my Bluetooth skips a lot when I have the phone in my pocket while running. I am using Moto S305 headphones.
There were never any problems with the Moto Droid but I cannot use the same headphones without skipping unless I hold the Dinc in my hand.
If your download fully cancels in the middle, do not resume the download. When you try to resume - the phone will think you want to resume installation [it thinks the download is complete] and will update the phone with the partial firmware download. For those phones that were bricked, that is what was said happened to them - myself included. Now, why would the update not realize the firmware isn't complete and just abort the update is beyond me. Many of us ended up with paperweights from that. Had to go to AT&T to replace the phone last night.

View 25 Replies View RelatedA few minutes ago my signal just showed no service for the second time. It was totally random, just like the last time and I don't think it's an AT&T problem because I was stationary in my house, where I've never seen this happen on my past devices. (Happened a few times on the iphone, but it only showed searching for about a second, then it came right back). On the Captivate it will show no service and won't come back until I reboot the phone. I'm not in a fringe service area (usually have 3 bars of 3g). Has anyone seen this happen on theirs? I'm trying really hard not to return it, but some of the bugs are getting pretty annoying.
I'm going to install CT Scheduler and run a reboot every morning. If it happens again, it may be going back...
I couldn't help but notice that the signal strength of my new Captivate was kinda weak. Holding it side by side to my brother's iPhone 4 I had three bars (usually 2), while my brother has a full five bars. I know it can be any number of things, but I feel that it's probably something like the GPS, where it needs some sort of fix.I was just wondering if anyone had a similar problem, or have any ideas of how to fix it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just rec'd my captivate. Now, I've lived here all my life but still get confused going downtown. anyway, I voiced searched the hotel and the google found it on the first try. It navigated me all the way there with 100% accuracy.
The only issue is that when I took it away from the windshield area, to make a call, it lost signal. I didn't have a good place to put it, at the time, other than the dashboard - but it worked great.
I'll try it out again today & update.
I mostly use wifi at home and office so I usually turn the 3G off using APNdroid and Smartbar. When I needed to use 3G on the street, I used APNdroid and Smartbar too. But there is just a grey 3G signal on the notification bar. I have to turn the phone off and turn it on to have 3G signal.

My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.
It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.
At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.
So, the my questions are...
Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?
Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?
Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?
Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?
I haven't been lurking the forums enough to know if such a thread exists, so I'm sorry if it's a repeath, but I would like to know whether you guys like or dislike TouchWiz 3.0 on the Galaxy S phones, why, and whether it's worth it to use ADW.Launcher or LauncherPro.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm at my wits end with my 2nd Captivate. I returned the first one 2 weeks after purchase when it started to randomly shutdown. Then all was well for 2+ months and now my 2nd phone is starting to shut down randomly. To add insult to injury, after the latest OTA the phone is locking up, crashing the email app and freezing the messaging app. Sometimes I have to reboot just get email to start syncing again. Worse still, with Exchange PIN security enabled, the phone doesnt always accept the Enter/OK keypress after putting in the PIN so i'm stuck at the unlock screen. 100% stock never-rooted phone and no funky apps. I can't rely on this phone anymore, plus Exchange support is still mediocre. What do I do at this point? Exchange it for another unit? Wait for Froyo? Wait for WP7 phones? ATT has nothing that comes even close in terms of HW features. I came from a Samsung Blackjack 1, then 2, then Jack and all were great phones. This is such a letdown from Samsung.

View 19 Replies View RelatedEdit: Well, it looks like I found what the problem was. Apparently the time without signal being stuck at 50% is a known android bug that a lot of phones have. Tried the fix posted at the bottom of this thread FWIW: New LG Ally has 50% Time Without Signal Bug
and it seems to be working for me, phones been on for 10 minutes and my time without signal is reporting at 0%
Original Post. Am I just not understanding what it means? I looked at the cell standby information about an hour ago, and I panicked when I saw that it said the phone had been on for 1d 5 hours since I turned it on, and the time without signal was 50%.
I rebooted the phone to get a fresh reading tomorrow before running back to the at&t store to get my money back, and after the phone had been on for a few minutes I went to check the info again, and saw that the phone had been on for 8 minutes, and the time without signal was 50%. Now service isn't amazing in my house but I generally get 3 bars at my desk, with it fluctuating between 2-4. If I pick it up and hold it, it'll drop to 1-2, sometimes losing signal completely very briefly (thank you antenna design). But, the phone had been sitting on my desk untouched, so it seemed really strange to me that it would have been without service 4 minutes out of the 8 it had been on.
Went into my display settings and set the display to stay on for 30 minutes, and have been sitting in the phone status screen now watching the bars (going between 3-4 now for the time I've been watching it) and the signal strength (going between -97 dBm 8 asu to -81 dBm 16 asu). I haven't been sitting here staring at it, but I've been glancing at it often enough that I feel confident in saying that the phone has not lost signal in the last hour. However I can go into the cell standby details screen right now, and it's reporting the Time on as 1 hour 9 minutes, and time without signal.....50%. Am I missing something, is it trying to say that it's been without signal for 30 minutes of the last hour, or am I misunderstanding what "time without signal" means (though it seems pretty straightforward).
Anyone else noticing this on their phone?
I updated my phone 2 days ago and like all the changes. Everything is good except my battery. Before the upgrade I was fine with my battery. Everything was good. Since I upgraded to 2.2 my battery has been horrible. Just horrible. I thought this was supposed to improve battery life. Is this just a glitch or something? Someone told me that some people were having problems and there should be a change within 3 or 4 days to fix the problem. Is this correct or is my phone the only one that got worse battery life since the upgrade?
View 17 Replies View RelatedI installed LauncherPro and loooove it. However, I noticed my battery life is even more pathetic than it was on sense. Since unplugging at 8:30, I'm down to 80% already. I even disabled live backgrounds because I thought that might be the culprit. Has anyone else found that battery performance with LauncherPro is weaker than Sense? Or am I just being sensitive?

I use the default Samsung media player, Isyncr and Itunes. Although I have also used the Doubletwist Player (not the desktop software) and had the same issue, I just prefer the Samsung default player mainly because of the lock screen app.
Here is the issue.
First, I sync my playlists with Itunes using Isyncr, all of the songs come over great, art and tags, everything is perfect. It also creates M3U playlists on my phone. I double checked that everything is there.
Then when I unmount, media scanner scans my SD card (which takes way longer than it should) and it deletes all of my playlists. Now a little research on XDA forums tells me that this is because anytime the media scanner scans a playlist and can't find all of the songs from that playlist, it assumes it is an old playlist and deletes it. The problem is that when I look through the M3U files, every song referenced in the list is on the card...they are all there, yet it keeps deleting them.
Does anyone know of a solution to make it stop deleting my playlists?
Is there any place where all the cell phones are listed with what version of Android they support and how far they can be upgraded? I'm 50 years old and getting confused by all this techo stuff. I am getting rid of my Behold II this week and getting a phone that can play XM RADIO, MLB games and allow me to text easily. THAT IS ALL I CARE THAT MY PHONE DOES!

I developed a timer application but some people noticed that the notification never stops on their Samsung Galaxy or Spica.I have these flags attached to my notification :
notification.flags = Notification.FLAG_AUTO_CANCEL | Notification.FLAG_INSISTENT;
I'm not really sure this is the issue but I can't think of any other thing to cause this (and I don't have any samsung phone to test it).Do you have any idea why would it bug especially on Samsung phones?How could I make the notification sound to loop without using this Notification.FLAG_INSISTENT?

However I have had reports of devices on SDK 3 (1.5) having problems starting the application, with the following stack trace: If i change the build target back to version 4 as it was previously this issue goes away, also if i remove any graphical resources from my XML files this issue goes away.
