I am considering getting the fascinate (Verizon's version of the Galaxy S) but had been hearing that Samsung has weak radios and the reception is bad.Any truth to this? How has your signal/reception been?

Leaning more towards the desire, but the only thing holding me back is the poor reception problems people have been experiencing. I'm on orange, and based in the east midlands, UK. Not had bad reception in my area with other phones in the past, so if got the desire and did have problems, it would annoy me to say the least
View 2 Replies View RelatedI work in a location where the phone is without a signal about 35%-40% of the time. Naturally, my battery suffers terribly and I often need to charge it sometime during the work day to ensure it makes it until bedtime. Due to firewall/security issues, my phone is my only way to get to my Gmail. I also spend a lot of time on the move, from meeting to meeting, so it's advantageous to leverage my Exchange sync. Typically, I'm able to get emails right away, as the signal drops in and out frequently as opposed to being completely unavailable for long stretches of time.
I guess what I'm looking for is a way to reduce consumption without reducing connectivity. I'm already shutting off GPS. I'm leaving Wifi on for now, as I've got rules on things like Tasker and Setting Profiles that rely on finding specific access points. What I've really been thinking about is having a Tasker setup that turns the Mobile Data Network on and off periodically (say, 1 minute on and 10 minutes off). Does that sound like a viable option? I've heard folks say turning the data network off can cause sync issues, but I'm hoping that turning it back on periodically will solve/prevent all that. Anyone have experience with something like this? Any other ideas for power savings, especially as it may be relevant to a low-signal environment? I also make sure I'm on auto-brightness and am more aggressive about screen timeouts.
I've had this Eris since January and was surprised when I began reading in the Eris forums about various issues, ongoing bugs and problems with signal reception, etc.Mine exhibited nothing other than solid, reliable behavior on 1.5 and again after the OTA came to our devices.After rooting, that same reliability and concrete behavior continues, with one exception: on my now favorite ROM, XTR 2.1.1, the signal quality has dropped to near nothing, even to the point of truly nothing; zero bars and 1g rather than my usual 3g and two or three sometimes 4 bars.Recovering to Senseable 3.1 the signal quality returns to normal.Has anybody else seen any differences from ROM to ROM wrt signal strength?

It seems like the reception/signal is a little flaky. My buddy just bought a brand new droid yesterday and he has the same thing a lot of times with just one 3G bar where I' ve seen other google phones with 3 or 4 bars.

Even though it shows full signal I lose calls halfway through people try calling me only to get my answer phone but phone is next to me showing full signal. If I try and use the internet it won't upload pages unless I put wi-fi on. It's not where I live as husband on same network and his phone is fine. What should do.

View 12 Replies View RelatedA few minutes ago my signal just showed no service for the second time. It was totally random, just like the last time and I don't think it's an AT&T problem because I was stationary in my house, where I've never seen this happen on my past devices. (Happened a few times on the iphone, but it only showed searching for about a second, then it came right back). On the Captivate it will show no service and won't come back until I reboot the phone. I'm not in a fringe service area (usually have 3 bars of 3g). Has anyone seen this happen on theirs? I'm trying really hard not to return it, but some of the bugs are getting pretty annoying.
I'm going to install CT Scheduler and run a reboot every morning. If it happens again, it may be going back...
I couldn't help but notice that the signal strength of my new Captivate was kinda weak. Holding it side by side to my brother's iPhone 4 I had three bars (usually 2), while my brother has a full five bars. I know it can be any number of things, but I feel that it's probably something like the GPS, where it needs some sort of fix.I was just wondering if anyone had a similar problem, or have any ideas of how to fix it.

Maybe It just needs to warm up, or maybe I've elevated the last phone in my memory, but I seem to be getting less bars, even in open areas.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just rec'd my captivate. Now, I've lived here all my life but still get confused going downtown. anyway, I voiced searched the hotel and the google found it on the first try. It navigated me all the way there with 100% accuracy.
The only issue is that when I took it away from the windshield area, to make a call, it lost signal. I didn't have a good place to put it, at the time, other than the dashboard - but it worked great.
I'll try it out again today & update.
I mostly use wifi at home and office so I usually turn the 3G off using APNdroid and Smartbar. When I needed to use 3G on the street, I used APNdroid and Smartbar too. But there is just a grey 3G signal on the notification bar. I have to turn the phone off and turn it on to have 3G signal.

My signal strength fluctuates wildly just sitting in the same spot. With the Hero I got a constant 5 of 6 bars, but the Moment will vary between 0 and 5 of 6 bars. But it's more complicated than that.
It seems that whenever the EVDO data kicks in, it causes the signal strength to drop to 0 or 1 bar. Once the data is idle, the EVDO indicator turns grey and then changes from EV(^v) to EV(D). At that point the single strength will return to 3 or 4 bars.
At times, though not as consistently or often, the EVDO connection will fall back to 1xRTT and will switch between them every few minutes. This will occur even when the signal strength bars are in the 3 to 4 range.
So, the my questions are...
Does the signal strength apply to the data signal or just the voice signal?
Is there any legitimate reason for the signal strength to vary wildly like I've described, even when sitting in the same recliner where the Hero had a constant 5 bar connection and data service that never wavered?
Is anyone else having signal strength and/or data service issues?
Should I exchange the Moment for another Moment or will I likely experience the same issue?
I noticed I was getting barely any reception after flashing cognition 2.2 so I used Odin to change back to stock. I still get barely any reception no matter where I go, and I'm not sure what the problem is. Any help would be much appreciated.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got the Captivate this weekend and I'm noticing at my house i am getting poor signal strength. It runs anywhere from around -100 to no service what so ever. I have been on AT&T for years and have had no trouble with my blackberry that gets around -75 to -80.
I bought the nexus one and had the same issue with that phone so i sent it back thinking it was a hardware issue.
I had 1.25hrs of talk time use 60% of my battery. Not a good sign. Also, the reception has been very unstable, wavering between 1 and 3 bars all over town. My cheap Nokia go phone I was using had 4-5 bars everywhere. The wi-fi signal appears to show less bars than my other phones.

I was sitting next to my friend who just got a droid and is unrooted. I was explaining how great everything was, but he was skeptical to root as most of us have been.
I wanted to make a phone call so I picked up my droid, but I went between 0 bars to half a bar and had a weak to no signal. I dialed the number, but the call wasn't going through. He, on the other hand had 3-4 bars consistently. I was pretty embarrassed when I had to ask him to use unrooted droid. I even tried *228 but my reception was still poor.
How can you explain this? More importantly how can I get "more bars" and a stronger signal.
I just got the droid incredible a few days ago and have had be reception since where I only get like one or two bars while in town and barely one at my house. I took it to the verizon store in town and they said this county area has the best 3G coverage you can get and can not figure out why I am getting such low bars. They need a roaming update thing twice on my phone but it did nothing. They said I would have to take it into a service station. I was hoping I could find a fix for it on here before doing so since my phone is rooted. also I notice that the antenna is at the bottom of the phone and when holding it there, the reception drops even more.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEdit: Well, it looks like I found what the problem was. Apparently the time without signal being stuck at 50% is a known android bug that a lot of phones have. Tried the fix posted at the bottom of this thread FWIW: New LG Ally has 50% Time Without Signal Bug
and it seems to be working for me, phones been on for 10 minutes and my time without signal is reporting at 0%
Original Post. Am I just not understanding what it means? I looked at the cell standby information about an hour ago, and I panicked when I saw that it said the phone had been on for 1d 5 hours since I turned it on, and the time without signal was 50%.
I rebooted the phone to get a fresh reading tomorrow before running back to the at&t store to get my money back, and after the phone had been on for a few minutes I went to check the info again, and saw that the phone had been on for 8 minutes, and the time without signal was 50%. Now service isn't amazing in my house but I generally get 3 bars at my desk, with it fluctuating between 2-4. If I pick it up and hold it, it'll drop to 1-2, sometimes losing signal completely very briefly (thank you antenna design). But, the phone had been sitting on my desk untouched, so it seemed really strange to me that it would have been without service 4 minutes out of the 8 it had been on.
Went into my display settings and set the display to stay on for 30 minutes, and have been sitting in the phone status screen now watching the bars (going between 3-4 now for the time I've been watching it) and the signal strength (going between -97 dBm 8 asu to -81 dBm 16 asu). I haven't been sitting here staring at it, but I've been glancing at it often enough that I feel confident in saying that the phone has not lost signal in the last hour. However I can go into the cell standby details screen right now, and it's reporting the Time on as 1 hour 9 minutes, and time without signal.....50%. Am I missing something, is it trying to say that it's been without signal for 30 minutes of the last hour, or am I misunderstanding what "time without signal" means (though it seems pretty straightforward).
Anyone else noticing this on their phone?
I know Im probubly in the wrong place, but my girlfriend says her samsung epic has baaad reception compared to her old phone on the same carrier.

My wife also has an epic and she got the update this morning too. We put our phones next to each other and she has full bars. I am lucky if I get one. It looses service constantly and is looking for service. Could the update have done this, maybe I just never notcied. Could I have a bad radio?

In my bed room I used to get full 3g signal on my old phone, I am lucky if I get 3 bars now. At my dad's house he had 5 bars signal, and he usually is worse signal than me. I at that point had 0 bars, and my phone reported no service. Is this a hardware problem or a software one. I am not sure whether to return the phone or keep it, I really like everything about it, and some lag has been sorted in the custom rom at modaco, however I am not sure whether to try it, cause If I need to return it, I'll have voided my warranty.

My issue is that I get NO bars at work near DFW Airport. Iv updated the PRL and the latest maint release but the thing still doesn't connect while at work. Any idea for fixing the sensitivity so I can make calls at work? I am sooo tied of hearing the ?Lack of Signal beeps? all day long. Vz droid my co-worker has is solid 4-3 and he laughs at me as he says it must be his coverage map blocking my signal.
I though Sprint could connect on VZ s network?
G1 and my Behold 2 her phone had good reception and the behold had nearly none. Half the time I don't get phone calls. They go straight to VM. My roommate's BB pearl gets double the reception mine does. My other roommate's Nokia gets even better reception. All on the T-mo network. Another friend who has a G1 same thing, he has reception I don't. Not to mention the other problems I have had. This is my 3rd Behold II by the way. Been replaced twice and back to Samsung for 3 weeks once.
