Nov 26, 2009After reading Engadget's article on how to make your own dock, I decided to make my own, and I wanted to see if anyone else has made their own custom docks as well. As for mine, I just used some Foam-core board, glue and extra magnets lying around, and came up with this:
I plan on adding a big ol' Droid logo to the face of it as well, but until then I think it looks pretty decent
Motorola Droid :: Need Car Mount And Multimedia Docks
Nov 25, 2009I have been trying to find one in stores for about a week and a half now and can't find them anywhere.
Then two days ago they went on backorder online, and now they aren't even listed on Verizon's website, and on Motorola's they are both listed as "Coming Soon." Anyone have any info on these?
Also, does the car mount come with a charger? It states that it does on Motorola's website but it says it doesn't on Verizon's...
Motorola Droid :: Pictures - Magnetic Docks Work
Nov 9, 2009So it's no secret that the super-special-awesome multimedia and car docks use magnetics to get you into that mode. But I got curious just now, so here is what happens when you put 1/4" cube neodymium magnets on certain spots on the device. If you already figured that this is how it works, good for you.
These pictures are terrible, yes. You can click on them to see them in their full-sized horror. I didn't make a point of being artistic here, I just want to show you what happens. And yes, that is a box of Sensodyne. It was on my bathroom vanity, which is the best-lit area of my house at nighttime.
This is where you want to put the magnet to activate the sensor.
But the polarity is the key to choosing which "dock" gets activated. I don't have a polarity indicator to tell me which pole is which, but suffice it to say that one pole activates multimedia, and the other activates car.
I tried this with 5mm diameter, 1mm thick neodymium disks, but they didn't work. That's the only other size I have besides 1" cubes which I'd be afraid to put by my phone though.
You may want to look into something like 5mm by 2mm or 10mm by 2mm or something. 1/4" cubes aren't very compact if you're looking to be thrifty and make your own dock. You could just slip a thin disk into your design and it'd be totally discreet. Hey, making your own dock or buying an el cheapo one and slipping in a 10 cent magnet sure beats buying a $30 one, doesn't it?
This also shows us that there may not be any more special docks to come, and if there will be, they won't be based on this technology. After all, both poles of the magnetic sensor have already been used.

Nov 6, 2009Picked my home dock and car mount along with screen protectors for $50.00 with my Corp discount.I played with the Droid and Eris.I know the Droid is the right decision for me.There may not be multitouch but the phone flies.The Eris is much better than the Sprint Hero however.I had that phone for almost 30 days so I should know.I pick up my phone at 10am from BB till then it's breakfast at ihop.

Oct 26, 2009I just came from my local Best Buy where I tried to social-engineer myself a Droid. I brought the Best Buy sku 9553501 and Motorola number A855 with me. The VERY helpful employee looked up the sku and it came up "Not avail at location". He realized it was the Droid and verified his belief by pulling out some accessories (Droid protective cover) marked A855. He told me that this Best Buy wasn't scheduled to have the Droid yet, and proceeded to tell me all about his hacked and rooted phone, how he ran Hero on some WinMo device. He told me that "IF" that Best Buy was going to be able to sell the phone, it won't be until November 9th. He also mentioned that Best Buy is having a training with Verizon on November 2nd. Next attempt will be at the Verizon business store.

I bought them on the VZW website and got both for around $22 bucks each. I've been happy with both even though I haven't been driving much. Has anyone seen a car dock that doesn't block the camera? Mine does. I wanted to launch Qik or Ustream Broadcaster while I drive around. Just thought it would make for some cool video.

Oct 30, 2009Since the Droid is a micro-USB connection, I am assuming that we do not have to purchase the over-priced Motorola/VZW accessories? All that is necessary is standard car/wall adapter that accepts USB input. Then, any micr-USB cable will suffice. A quick look at different sites has the chargers for ~$10 and a micro-USB cable is only ~$3.

Nov 26, 2009Why are accessories so scarce.Eris has been out since 11/6.You would figure at least batteries and charging docks would be available.Also with the eris just being a re-branded hero, you would think there would be abundance of accessories.I can understand the droid,because its a completely new device.I know I could just do my research and find out what batteries and docks are compatible, but i don't think i should have to.When i bought the samsung omnia i had no problem finding batteries and docks.It seems like it was a rushed launch, but they been talking about this since the beginning of the year.

Jul 3, 2010there have been a couple of posts asking about car docks for the galar xy S vibrant - someone showed up on ebay today offering 3 different types priced pretty cheap - $11 to 13 shipped they don't have built in charge connectors, but for the money don't look bad as well as someone else offering Invisible Shield screen protectors for $14 shipped and Morgan Fields protectors for $16 nice to see some accessories already hitting the market.

Feb 9, 2013I am looking for a launcher/app that allows multiple horizontal scrollable docks. Does something like this exist? Or even a dock that can be placed in the middle of the home screen rather than the top or bottom. I guess I just assumed something like this existed.
You could have a 5x1 " games" row that would allow you to scroll through all your games. I would imaging it could hold approximately 7 apps total. And a "social" row that you could scroll through to access all social apps.

Dec 5, 2009I found this dock that is almost what I'm looking for, but I don't like FM transmitters. I prefer just to use a cable for the sound since it's clearer and I don't have to keep fiddling with stations when I get feedback. All the other docks that I've found are window mounted suction cup deals. Does anyone know of a dock that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but doesn't have the FM transmitter?
