Motorola Droid : Strength Magnet To Trigger Docks?
Nov 22, 2009Is there to small or to big of a magnet strength/size. I wouldn't want to go to big and end up damaging the device. or having issues with the screen.

View 2 RepliesI really dislike the car home mode. It constantly freezes when I take my phone off the car mount and/or will not deactivate and I find it completely useless. Does anyone know where the magnet is located in the car dock so I can remove it and keep it from activating car home?
View 16 Replies View RelatedSo where, other than eBay do I find a dock? Verizon won't even take orders online or in my local store.
View 28 Replies View RelatedAfter reading Engadget's article on how to make your own dock, I decided to make my own, and I wanted to see if anyone else has made their own custom docks as well. As for mine, I just used some Foam-core board, glue and extra magnets lying around, and came up with this:
I plan on adding a big ol' Droid logo to the face of it as well, but until then I think it looks pretty decent
The Iphone/touch seems to have a lot of third part support, do you think the droid will ever see anything like this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to find one in stores for about a week and a half now and can't find them anywhere.
Then two days ago they went on backorder online, and now they aren't even listed on Verizon's website, and on Motorola's they are both listed as "Coming Soon." Anyone have any info on these?
Also, does the car mount come with a charger? It states that it does on Motorola's website but it says it doesn't on Verizon's...
So it's no secret that the super-special-awesome multimedia and car docks use magnetics to get you into that mode. But I got curious just now, so here is what happens when you put 1/4" cube neodymium magnets on certain spots on the device. If you already figured that this is how it works, good for you.
These pictures are terrible, yes. You can click on them to see them in their full-sized horror. I didn't make a point of being artistic here, I just want to show you what happens. And yes, that is a box of Sensodyne. It was on my bathroom vanity, which is the best-lit area of my house at nighttime.
This is where you want to put the magnet to activate the sensor.
But the polarity is the key to choosing which "dock" gets activated. I don't have a polarity indicator to tell me which pole is which, but suffice it to say that one pole activates multimedia, and the other activates car.
I tried this with 5mm diameter, 1mm thick neodymium disks, but they didn't work. That's the only other size I have besides 1" cubes which I'd be afraid to put by my phone though.
You may want to look into something like 5mm by 2mm or 10mm by 2mm or something. 1/4" cubes aren't very compact if you're looking to be thrifty and make your own dock. You could just slip a thin disk into your design and it'd be totally discreet. Hey, making your own dock or buying an el cheapo one and slipping in a 10 cent magnet sure beats buying a $30 one, doesn't it?
This also shows us that there may not be any more special docks to come, and if there will be, they won't be based on this technology. After all, both poles of the magnetic sensor have already been used.
I keep seeing custom docks with text in them instead of icons. How is it done? I like the look.

I don't like using the dedicated camera button because my case is sort of thick and the button is so small, its hard to get it to snap the shot, I'd rather tap the screen like other android phones.

View 8 Replies View RelatedSo far this thing is blowing my dinc out of the water in the signal strength department. I live where I basically have no service (rarely below -100 db) and I am doing side by side comparisons and it isn't even close. The dx is loading pages snappy when my dinc isn't even getting 3g.
View 12 Replies View Relatedanyone seen an app that simply reports yours signal strength? the built in one (settings > about phone > status) seems to report, but in a way that makes some sense. for example, anyone know what -90 dBm 0 asu really means?
I have a cool app called GPS test that shows the GPS strength - bar chart and number and color - of GPS signals.
I have another app called No Signal Alert that tells you when you have lost your signal. I emailed them to incorporate a signal strength meter, as it seems a logical app to have it.
Some professional reviews (engadget and phonescoop) have noted signal strength issues with the Droid 2. For example, see:
Review: Motorola Droid 2 : The Three S's (Phone Scoop)
Particularly for those who have/had other Verizon phones, have you noticed any signal strength problems, trouble with calls, or slow data?
The tricorder app is supposed to be able to but it doesn't show it on my droid. Same thing goes for the "Antennas" app.
Anyone have any suggestions?
since the update i seem to have a much weaker signal and calls are getting dropped. quite often it seems that i bounce between 3g and 1x. anyone else?
View 7 Replies View RelatedIs anyone else seeing this behavior?right before I make a voice call the droid will show 4 bars, when I place a voice call it will drop to 0 bars and the voice quality is pretty bad.In the phone settings you can see the DBm signal strengh and before I make a call it will show -96 and when I make a call it will go to -104.I have noticed this even when right on top of a cell tower. You actually don't notice it when the signal is very strong, but on my droid it does appear that the signal degraded significantly when doing a voice call.It also does the same thing when the Wifi is turned on, it's almost like it's switching to another antenna for the voice when wifi is on or you make a call.So far I have not been impressed with the phones voice quaility at all.
View 32 Replies View RelatedI really am trying to order my Eris today. I have been waiting for the Passion, though I am not even sure I would choose it over the Eris. Also considered the Moto many times, but just can't get over how large it feels in my pocket (also concerned I am too rough on things to have a sliding mechanism on my phone). As Eris owners, am I crazy not to wait it out another 4 weeks or so to see if the Passion's speed and screen resolution are worth an extra $100+?? By the way, I am not worried about the battery.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have a requirement wherein I need a list of all the contacts that are edited/changed.
As per the Android documentation,
_SYNC_DIRTY
will be set every time a contact is edited. But, there seems to be a bug in this, which makes this always set to 1 (no matter what), even is we explicitly set it to 0.
So, I was wondering if I can create a SQLite TRIGGER on the contacts database. Such that, everytime a contact is edited, the edited contact id is populated into a different table which I can read later from my application.
I tried this...
CREATE TRIGGER IF NOT EXISTS updated_contacts UPDATE ON 'contacts.db'.phones
BEGIN
INSERT INTO updated_table SET updated_id=old.person;
END;
But a few problems here...
1) 'phones' is a table in the contacts database. but, I am not sure about the name of the contacts database (here I have assumed it to be 'contacts.db').
2) updated_table is a table on a different database 'mydatabase.db' that I have created from my application. and, I am not sure if I can set TRIGGERS across different databases.
All this in Android 1.6 Also, I am not sure about the permission to access native contacts database on Android.
Is there any other way of achieving this.
I have a website designed for the android browser using jquery/jqtouch. As a part of it, i have a map page that loads. In the process of displaying my data, I found that some of my customer's addresses, when clicked kick of the google app map, with the data sent to it. It also seems to load and run a ton faster (as well as having all the benefits of navigation, etc).
So I've searched and searched, but am unable to "emulate" that built in function of kicking off the address. I've tried links with geo: and maps:, etc, but to none will open the installed app. Yet, just having a <li></li> item with an address, the browser will detect a "proper" address and open the app.
I don't care if i have to kick it off with javascript, or a href, it just has to be embedded in the html.
I want to trigger an application after the arrival of the sms. I using android based mobile phone.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWith a lot of apps eg, camera, pictures appears in the gallery immediately, but some apps like Dropbox or blackmoon Attachsave, if you put a picture or MP3 or whatever on the card, they can not appear for ages.
One way on my Galaxy Apollo is to plug in USB and go into storage mode, it then scans the disk (A little icon in the status bar) and the media is now there.
A more extreme way is to unmount the card and then physically remove it and re-insert (I dont have to remove the battery) and it sets off a scan.
Is there anyway to trigger a media scan from within android to make it quicker for stuff to appear?
there have been a couple of posts asking about car docks for the galar xy S vibrant - someone showed up on ebay today offering 3 different types priced pretty cheap - $11 to 13 shipped they don't have built in charge connectors, but for the money don't look bad as well as someone else offering Invisible Shield screen protectors for $14 shipped and Morgan Fields protectors for $16 nice to see some accessories already hitting the market.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a launcher/app that allows multiple horizontal scrollable docks. Does something like this exist? Or even a dock that can be placed in the middle of the home screen rather than the top or bottom. I guess I just assumed something like this existed.
You could have a 5x1 " games" row that would allow you to scroll through all your games. I would imaging it could hold approximately 7 apps total. And a "social" row that you could scroll through to access all social apps.
I found this dock that is almost what I'm looking for, but I don't like FM transmitters. I prefer just to use a cable for the sound since it's clearer and I don't have to keep fiddling with stations when I get feedback. All the other docks that I've found are window mounted suction cup deals. Does anyone know of a dock that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but doesn't have the FM transmitter?
