Motorola Droid X :: Way To Use Different Keyboards Based On Orientation?
Aug 17, 2010
So I love typing on this huge screen, but here is my question: Is there a way to use different keyboards based on orientation? I like SWYPE in portrait, but multi-touch in landscape.
Also, with the after market keyboards available on the market (ie better keyboard), who has tried them, who likes them, and most importantly why (layout, skins, auto correct, etc)?

I need to have my view resize itself based on the orientation. After extensive googling (maybe i was using the wrong terms) I could find nothing telling me how to detect when the orientation was changed. Here is my layout file: how do I have it automatically resize itself? I want each item (the EditText and the WebView) to fill half the screen (not counting the title/notification bars). I set the height to absolute and not wrap_content because wrap_content defaults to 1 line for EditText and nothing for WebView. and fill_parent has the EditText on top of the WebView.

Is it possible for my android application to dynamically adjust the no of column and no of row of my TableLayout based on orientation?
For example, when in landscape mode, the TableLayout is 3x2 and when
in portrait mode, the TableLayout is 2x3?

I am trying to find more information on the available soft keyboards for the Droid. The standard one that comes with the phone is simply awful, I only used the pull out keyboard. A few weeks ago I discovered the HTC IME keyboard and fell in love with it. Unfortunately with the new update it appears that that keyboard no longer works (force closes). Was hoping to pull together a list of available keyboards and what all of you think of them. Currently I am trying SwiftKey which is alright but not perfect. I miss HTC's prediction capabilities. But for now anything is better than the basic one.

I tried better keyboard but it isn't multi touch i was wondering if there is a 3rd party keyboard similar to the stock keyboard that supports multi touch. Coming from iphone it would greatly help my on screen keyboard usage, as the hardware keyboard is awful IMHO.

For all you guys out there who like taking themes to the max, I was tipped to this website by Android Forums - View Profile: incrediblenotinstock
http://www.gimpsta.com/themer/
You will want to jump over to Xda here : [url] nd pick up the high res v27 for froyo if your on froyo the other if you are not and pick up that zip. You will need the clicker hi apk from that zip if you want to adjust the settings for the keyboard.
I didn't create this website or any of the themes there All credit goes to those that did. I just wanted to share with the community. Its very easy and a straight forward process and it creates a QR code (which I never got to work) and a download link to dl the apk and side load it like you would any other app. If you already have the htc.ime keyboard installed, you will want to uninstall it first. It does hold a lot of memory (around 11mb in running processes for me) but it doesn't lag. It also isn't multi touch, but I have found typing very fluid for me.

Any body else with BB7.5 not able to install the updates to Better Keyboard and 'Talk to Me' keyboard?I bought both of them before I rooted don't use either for swype and the 2.1 keyboard.Ever since I installed BB7.5, I've noticed I cannot install the update. It downloads, tries to install and then gives me an error message saying that Installation failed. When I click on the notification it tells me "Insufficient storage available" This seems to only happen with these two keyboards and other apps install fine. The directory in question is data/apps and I have 136 MB free in ROM.Any ideas anyone? Am I the only one?

Is it stable? Gimme the scoop. How is it compared to the last 2.1 or even the last 2.01.I am itching to try it, but I have had minor stability issues in the past.

It would be sweet if the Droid (or OS 2.0.1 as the case may be), when switching orientation from portrait to landscape, would keep the keyboard showing if it was already showing in the prior orientation.Often, I'll be typing a text in portrait mode and then realize that I'd prefer to type faster and more accurately. However, when I switch to landscape orientation, I have to click/highlight the text box in order for the virtual keyboard to show again. It's a bit of a hassle.Oh yeah, for the hardware keyboard lovers out there that suggest I use it instead.I hate the hardware keyboard.though curiously, the keypad is pretty nice for moving the cursor.

Anyone else really missing swype after going to ESE53 based ROM? Really loving the rom, but kinda dying without swype. I hate manually typing in letter by letter when using the phone in normal position. Use to be able to fly through text and not have to go horizontal to type. Anyway, any idea when Swype for 2.1 is coming out?

I'm sure there is no easy answer to this question.. but is there a way to remove the "HTC"-type settings in the CM-based ROMS(Koush/JRummy remix/ UD 10, etc.)? By these settings I mean the Trackball/Breathing light and similar. These ROMS would seem overall more Droid-oriented without these settings that are basically useless to us Deleting the HTC Copyright .apk seems easy enough..

I get a text, pull my phone out of the belt holster.....and read it in normal orientation. With the phone unlocked, I read the text(s) and decide to respond. About 75% of the time, it either takes 5-10 seconds to change orientation when I go to horizontal mode......or it won't even switch at all. It gets so frustrating I feel like throwing the phone.
Fwiw, a quick slide to expose the hardware keyboard will quickly change to horizontal orientation, but sliding it closed brings it back to default orientation, and doesn't seem to affect the speed of orienting back to horizontal.

Can one of the few of you who has a Droid X let me know the orientation of the Micro USB port? I'm thinking of getting a right angle (or left angle) micro usb cable and I want to make sure I get one where the cable runs down towards the bottom of the device. I'm pretty sure that the Moto Droid and the HTC Incredible are oriented differently.

I am about to embark on the ROOTING journey for my new Droid-X, and wanted to know if there was a way to backup the phone so that I could get it back EXACTLY to where it is before the rooting. If not, is there a way to get it 100% back to factory default settings? I haven't really customized it yet, so if I break it during rooting or BRICK it, I know there are UNBRICKING steps posted already, but I want to make sure I don't end up with a FUBAR phone during this process, or afterwards.

It seems like my droid will only go to horizontal orientation if I turn it counter-clockwise. When I turn it clockwise, the video plays in landscape by upside down. I'd like to play it landscape turned clockwise and be able to access the charging port while watching television. has anyone found a video player that is capable of this?

Is there a way to make the home screen change orientation with the accelerometer? On my phone, it will only change when I pull out the physical keyboard, which is not really what I'm looking to do most of the time.It changes just fine in all other applications, but the home screen doesn't. Is this a flaw with my phone or a design decision?

First post here. First Android phone as well. Picked up the X yesterday and am enjoying it. One quick question though, can I not turn the phone to the right (bottom keys to the left) to change the orientation? Things only turn when I turn the phone left or straight up, not right or upside down.

I have Swype installed on my Eris, which I love for texting, but I would rather use the stock HTC keyboard when using the browser. Is there any way to set it so that the browser automatically defaults to the HTC keyboard, and text messages default to Swype? I looked around in all the settings and didn't find anything.
