I need to have my view resize itself based on the orientation. After extensive googling (maybe i was using the wrong terms) I could find nothing telling me how to detect when the orientation was changed. Here is my layout file: how do I have it automatically resize itself? I want each item (the EditText and the WebView) to fill half the screen (not counting the title/notification bars). I set the height to absolute and not wrap_content because wrap_content defaults to 1 line for EditText and nothing for WebView. and fill_parent has the EditText on top of the WebView.

So I love typing on this huge screen, but here is my question: Is there a way to use different keyboards based on orientation? I like SWYPE in portrait, but multi-touch in landscape.
Also, with the after market keyboards available on the market (ie better keyboard), who has tried them, who likes them, and most importantly why (layout, skins, auto correct, etc)?
It would be sweet if the Droid (or OS 2.0.1 as the case may be), when switching orientation from portrait to landscape, would keep the keyboard showing if it was already showing in the prior orientation.Often, I'll be typing a text in portrait mode and then realize that I'd prefer to type faster and more accurately.However, when I switch to landscape orientation, I have to click/highlight the text box in order for the virtual keyboard to show again.It's a bit of a hassle.Oh yeah, for the hardware keyboard lovers out there that suggest I use it instead.I hate the hardware keyboard.though curiously,the keypad is pretty nice for moving the cursor.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got my Droid Eris. It was working fine to go back and forth between landscape and upright, until I calibrated the G-sensor. Now I'm not sure what's going on. I'm not sure if I've done the calibration correctly (I assume you just sit it upright on a flat surface?) or what. It will randomly go into landscape mode, but then I can't get it back upright unless I go to the home screen.

However, after choosing Automatic Rotation in settings, I found that anything with primarily text input defaults to and locks in landscape orientation. This includes google search, email, gtalk and text messaging. I prefer reading my email in portrait, so I can see more than 3 of the emails at a time. And since my text input is calibrated in portrait, landscape is just annoying me.

View 2 Replies View Relatedis it possible to manually rotate the screen or fix the current screen orientation (with a key/button)? because it really annoys me having taken portrait pictures that cannot be viewed (with the media gallery application) in a portrait fashion on the milestone. this is because it always rotates the portrait picture back to landscape when rotating the milestone from landscape to portrait. right now there is no way of properly viewing portrait pictures on the milestone other than tilting your head (holding the milestone landscape and tilting your head along).this cannot be the way it was intended to be, right? or do I have to get a different viewing software which allows you to choose screen orientation? is there such an app?

I mean i wanna move left, right, up and down in the on-screen keyboard's UI (keys) with pressing arrow keys from my external(hardware) keyboard. The key that cursor is on should be focused, when i press an arrow key from my external keyboard the focused key should change and when i press "enter" from my external keyboard it should be operated.(written to the screen etc.) How can i make this? Is there any idea? How can i make virtual keyboard's keys visitable? It doesn't look like moving around a matrix of buttons.

I already tried inserting android:screenOrientation="portrait" into both my android manifest and into every single XML file I had but unfortunately only some stayed in portrait and others still flipped to landscape.

How can I catch this in the code? I want to know whenever the orientation changes. I assume I have to set a listener, but I can't find an example anywhere.
I am making an Android app which is currently coming along nicely - I've hit upon a couple of stumbling blocks.
1) How do I stop the screen from going dim/off and the phone locking while the application is running?
2) Can I force the phone to enter landscape mode on running my application?

1. Start a new thread (as a result of a button click - or similar).
2. User changes the screen orientation (causing the Activity that started the thread to be destroyed).
3. Thread finishes, and wants to do some dialog (or any UI) work. However, doing a showDialog, dismissDialog, ... will crash, as the thread it still referring to the old Activity.
This can be solved by updating the data in the thread to refer to the new Activity upon a screen orientation change.
However, couldn't the Android framework just forward any requests from a destroyed activity, to the newly created Activity, saving us developers of handling it ourselves?
I know on screen orientation changes activity restarted, but suppose i don't want to restart the activity then what should I do? I had tried it by adding in manifest.xml. android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"
and override public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) { super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig); }
But still activity restarted each time when I change screen orientation.

The Activitie's view consists of an ImageView, two Buttons and a Spinner. I don't have static variables and can't imagine where i could leak a context.
Most of the times, the exception is thrown at setContentView (R.layout.upload); sometimes it goes fine until imgUpload.setImageURI(imageURI);

And when I am assigning value to this array, application is stopped.

I snap a photo, and it gets placed onto an ImageView. When the user sees the page where the Image View is, and I turn the phone sideways where the orientation is horizontal, the app immediately returns to the app's main screen.
