Motorola Droid X :: Tether / Hotspot Via 3rd Party / Bandwidth Limits?

When you use tether or hotspot via 3rd party or rooting are you still bound by the 2gb or 5gb limitation?

Motorola Droid :: Wireless Tether - Mobile Hotspot

Sep 9, 2010

I feel like I have done enough reading on knowing how to preform the root on my phone, but I am just curious as to how I get different features like wireless tether, or any tether for that matter, without having to download easytether or PDAnet. Is hot spot even available on our phones?

Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?

I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit.

Motorola Droid X :: Advantage To Using Hacked 3G Hotspot Vs Wireless Tether

Nov 9, 2010

What are the differences and/or advantages to using Wireless Tether vs. "hacked" 3G Hotspot, which I've been seeing people talk about recently? I was under the impression that Wireless Tether is a free option for wireless hotspot capability - is using the hacked 3G hotspot less detectible or something?

Motorola Droid : Using Bandwidth Through A Tethered Device / High Speed Connections?

Jan 29, 2010

I just recently started using pdanet when my high speed internet connection at home was having issues. Oddly i found it to be very fast and work pretty flawlessly from my droid. My question is during the summer i have a 2nd home which has no option for high speed connections, but does get 3g Verizon. I mostly would use my laptop for reading emails and teaching online classes through my college. Has anyone on Verizon ever had issues using bandwidth through a tethered device as i described? I know there is this on going battle of whether our unlimited plans are truly unlimited or not. I would not use massive loads of data but i do not want to incur problems with my service either. Love to hear your opinions.

HTC EVO 4G :: Thinking Of Rooting / Difference Between Wireless Tether And Hotspot?

Nov 9, 2010

I mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?

Motorola Milestone :: Google Maps - How Much Bandwidth Does It Actually Use

Mar 23, 2010

Here in Canada we don't have unlimited data plans ($25 for 500MB on Telus), so obviously of big importance is how much bandwidth a GPS system like Google Maps actually uses, when it streams it's content.

Right now my option is to stick with Motonav, but I won't be buying it - it's 99EU, PER AREA, *EVERY 2 YEARS!* The funny part about Motonav is their site says the 99Euro is for the 'lifetime of the product' and then further down they define 'lifetime' to be 2 yrs. Haha.

Anyway... has anyone done a test with Google Maps from start to finish on say a 1hr trip and recorded how much data it uses? (maybe use an app like NetSentry which records used 3G and WiFi bandwidth) I'm not sure if Google Maps uses like megs per minute, or just a few kb per minute. I only get 500MB/month on my plan so if anyone knows if this is feasible, for a few trips per month using it...

Motorola Droid :: Charging With 3rd Party Cables?

Nov 8, 2009

I purchased some additional microUSB cables for use with my Droid at work and home so I'm not carrying one around all the time. I've found that the third party cables will not charge the Droid when plugged into the AC plug. The cable supplied by Motorola works fine, so I know it's not the AC plug. The cables do work as data connections when plugged into my laptop. Did I just buy crappy cables, or is there something special about the Moto cable?

Motorola Droid :: What 3rd Party Programs Do I Need To Root?

Oct 6, 2010

i am seriously considering joining the root party, but the number of 3rd party programs needed seems daunting. can anyone compile a list of all the software/download links you need to do it correctly? i have already read the following threads and am pretty set on using BuglessBeast 0.5 as my new ROM.The Official One-Click Rooting Solution for Droid Thread LATEST: V2.0.4.Painless and Thorough ROM Switching in Under an Hour.i know those threads mention Motorola Drivers, Soup or Root, ROM Manager, Nandroid, CW Recovery, and a few other programs. which ones do i absolutely need, and is there possibly an easier way than the one posted above to load BuglessBeast after i am done with the root? when i first started looking up info, i figured rooting would be the hard part; now it appears that loading the new ROM is much more complicated. i know there is alot of info already posted here, but sifting through it all for the useful bits is an arduous task. please be nice to the newb!

Motorola Droid :: Charging Droid With 3rd Party Chargers / Screen Wierdness

Nov 27, 2009

I've noticed some odd behavior when using a wall charger for an Amazon Kindle 2. The moment I plug in the charger it's as if there are fifty phantom fingers touching the screen repeatedly. I've heard others report similar behavior with various other non-moto chargers.the Kindle charger charges the Droid just fine, as does my Blackberry charger that I use at work. I just plug them in and immediately turn the screen off. I've been using those for 2 weeks and haven't noticed any ill effects as long as I turn the screen off immediately after plugging in the charger. At first I thought that any standard USB micro charger with the proper voltage should work without any issues. That is obviously not the case, but it leaves me wondering what causes the odd screen behavior. Are some chargers just not shielded properly? Is it EM interference activating the touchscreen? Or is the moto charger just special somehow? Maybe some EE type out there can figure out or explain what the deal is with this.

Android :: Bandwidth Hogging Applications For Droid?

Sep 30, 2010

I have a Droid X, and I got a nasty surprise after using it for a couple of weeks: I had gone through over 10 GB (not a typo) of bandwidth already, and earned a friendly call from Verizon telling me to shape up or they'd terminate my contract. Since then I've been running with background data turned off (settings -> data manager -> data delivery -> unchecked background data.) This works nicely and keeps my bandwidth down to usually a megabyte or so per day, preserves the battery, etc, but it seems like overkill. What I really want to find out is what was using so much bandwidth to begin with, and find a way to let my well-behaved apps run and update themselves, etc while preventing these bad ones from running. Anyone know of a way to track bandwidth usage on an app by app basis? Is that even possible? Or, has anyone else run into a similar problem and found a way to solve it?

Motorola Droid :: WiFi Hotspot In 2.2 - App To Upgrade

I was under the impression that when Android 2.2 was released and upgraded the Droid there would be an included WiFi Tether app to create a mobile hotspot on the device. However, since I received the update, I've yet to be able to find the app.

Was there not an included app in the upgrade?

Is there an app in the Market that will suffice that will not require the Droid to be rooted?

Is a rooted Droid with Android 2.2 the only way to have a WiFi Tether app run successfully on the Droid?
