Motorola Droid X :: Native 3G Tether Hack
Oct 4, 2010
My dad (64 yo) lives out in the boonies and doesn't have access to high speed wireless internet. I have a rooted Droid Incredible and I have WiFi Tether and also have done this --> http://androidforums.com/1697630-post20.html to allow for native Wifi 3G with my phone. My question is can you do the same hack or one like it for the Droid X?If so is it possible w/o root?

Still debating on which phone to buy. With the droid x the major concern is soft volume (some phones seem softer than others); rumors of over heating and wifi issues.
Is there a known hack to fix the volume issue; or has Motorola ack the issue and have publically indicated a fix is in the works? Next weekend is no-tax weekend (in Ma) so I might try to pick a phone up then...
I'm pretty sure the wifi issue is a firmware problem (shame on moto for using an encrypted boot loader and having bugs like this one); not sure if overheating is limited to a few phones or is a design issue.
Anyways please add comments (negative and positive) relative to alternatives (samsung s and evo are major contenders). With the samsung the major negative is it pauses now and then and also have soft volume (there is a fix for the gps issue); for evo the major negative is +$10 and poor battery life (this phone is nice and loud) also the display is a bit dimmer than the droid x (an issue for outdoor usage).

I've got a Droid 1 and am rooted w/BB rom. I was under the impression that I could go to my file manager and delete any apps, including native apps. However, the core or native apps list isn't available to me. How do I access and edit this list?

I was playing with my friend's G1 when I noticed a native, Android IM app. So I searched around my DROID and found nothing. What I want to know is where did it go? Why don't I have it? Where can I get it, and what would be the best solution without it?
Note: I would primarily use AIM.

Is there a setting, as with voice calls, to have all SMS commands directed through Google Voice? I've canceled my Verizon texting plan and want to send all of my texts through Google Voice. Obviously I can do this by composing messages through the GV app, but I would like to click on a contact's page and have GV automatically open to send the text message. Much like Handcent opens when you select a contacts texting option, when you have Handcent installed. When I select the text message option from a contacts page (or press their contact picture and then select the text option), the Droid opens the standard text message application to send the text. Interestingly, if I go into the call log, select a recently called number and choose "send text message," it opens Google Voice to send the text message. How do I get the same functionality as above, so that selecting text message from a contact's page or shortcut uses Google Voice to send the message?

with Bugless Beast's 2.1 build? I'm running BB0.7, and downloaded the pre8.apk from Google. But it said that I don't have the right kernel to support it. It's experimental, I know, and based on Android 2.0. What .apk are you using with 2.1 and do you get any kernel errors with it?

I haven't rooted my X, but I'm considering it. I like the idea of wireless tethering. I have a question tho. After you root, do you use the wireless hotspot app already on your phone, or do you need to download another app to use. I'm not quite brave enough to try this yet, but as a previous BB Storm user I tried nearly every upgraded OS that was leaked and never had an issue. The universal androot app looks pretty fool proof.

Is there anyway to force Barnacle or Wifi-Tether to not utilize ad-hoc for its network sharing ability? The 3G mobile hotspot app does not create an ad-hoc network and I have a system that I use on the road for business that will NOT connect to ad-hoc networks and there is no forseen capability for this system to connect to an ad-hoc network.

I have a Moto Droid that will be deactivated shortly. Since I am too cheap to pay the $100/month for voice+data, I was wondering if there's a way I can tether the Droid to my current phone via Bluetooth. Obviously I can't use the Droid to make calls this way, but ideally, all the other data apps and services would work... or at least all of the data services not requiring an active Verizon account. How many of the Droid's data services just need "network connection" versus "a Verizon account"? I would simply swap phones and start using the Droid, but until the Droid can safely shoot underwater video without dying this is a non-starter.

I'm a light internet user and have cancelled my home high speed internet. All I use it for is Ebay, news and the weather occasionally. Anyway, I just tether my phone to my desktop/laptop when I want to get on the net and it works awesome. My question - is there any way to tether my Droid to my PS3? I want to be able to go online with my PS3 for updates. If not, is there anyway I can basically "reverse" the effects of a wireless router and let my Droid give the net to my PC, and then maybe connect an ethernet cable from my PC to the "Internet" port on a wireless router and have WIFI??
