Motorola Droid :: Tethering Support - Able To Use PDAnet To Tether To Laptop
Nov 5, 2009
I know Verizon doesn't offer this officially but will we be able to use PDAnet with the droid to tether to my laptop, and is this something Verizon can detect and will charge you for?

With much headache I've gotten PdaNet to work with DroidX via Bluetooth, despite some part of the Bluetooth driver not installing correctly/missing driver component.I've got the thing to what seemed to be the connected state on my dad's laptop, because he wants to browse at work, anyway.. I think the Bluetooth connection is working, but Verizon seems to be able to tell that its a tether because it pops up that Verizon page asking me to get a payed subscription for the tethering service (the site that shows the pretty chart where they say they want $30 more) no matter what site URL I type in.Any ideas why this happens? suggestions? Is there another solution that people have confirmed working for DroidX or am I doing something wrong? Also, I read that to use the USB connection to PdaNet I had to install the PdaNet Desktop app, which I tried to but kept failing install using the Motorola and Generic driver options, but I think despite this, PdaNet seems to not work right because of that page keeps popping up asking me to purchase the HotSpot plan addon. What do you all think? Thanks for help beforehand.

Why does it seem to me that using my 54mbps wireless adapter with WIFI tether on my fascinate seems faster (and gets better speed tests) over connecting to USB2.0 over PDAnet? shouldn't USB connection be faster?

Before the update from 1.5, I had no issues tethering my MacBook through my Droid Eris with PDANet. The phone function of the handset was the only operation that would interrupt the signal.
Since the update, my Eris interrupts my internet frequently, without apparent reason. It begins the annoying cycle of kicking me off the web, alerting me that the phone was not ejected properly, mounting, launching iPhoto (which I cannot prevent from happening), and then I have to exit PDANet and relaunch so I can reconnect. It's a juggling act! Sometimes this cycle will repeat five or six times before the phone and computer settle down.

I'm curious if anybody has tried tethering with PDANet? I'll be new to Android and not sure if PDANet works on the EVO but I thought I'd ask.

I know this is a noobtastic question, but I have to ask. I was at a crappy hotel the other night and I used PDAnet to check email and what not. If I use the VZW tethering do I have to pay for it? Is it a one time fee like PDAnet or is it a monthly fee? If I use PDAnet am I going to pay out the wazoo on my next bill?

I need some help with tethering. I downloaded PDANET and not really sure how to use it. What I really want to do is use it for my XBOX 360. Also if I use tethering on my phone I know verizon wants you to pay for it. If I use this 3rd party application will it do anything to my account.

I was at the airport this morn. New incredible, new HP laptop. Pdanet worked the night before when installed. But while working my computer shut down randomly restarted and said it was installing updates. When it came back to life and I tried to restart the tether pdanet said the android device does not have a connection. Indeed. Whenever Ian tendering is plugged in even the browser on the phone doesn't work and 3g icon goes away.

Ok, first of all I am using one program right now called "easy tether" but i had pdanet and it worked fine on the trial part, that expired and I tired to connect to it and kept getting an error code "633" so I thought it was just because it was the trial program and not the real thing so I purchased the damn thing and I still can't get it up and running. I didn't mind paying for it as I said it ran pretty good before and just thought I would stick with it but I can't seem to get it up and running. I downloaded the easy tether and it runs good too but since I paid for pdanet I would like to at least try and see if I can get it up and running so can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong by getting that code? If I can't get it going I need to request a refund and I am out of town right now and that is why I need it so I can access the internet while I am gone, I can't go a month without internet!!! So can someone try and explain if they can what might be going on for pdanet not to run. Like I said I am using the easy-tether right now as we speak but it is a trial version too so don't want to have to pay for another one to avoid not being able to access secure sites.

PdaNet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! Unlike other tethering software that only supports Proxy connections, PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes on the computer. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.
You can follow the latest update of PdaNet for Android at

Having given it much thought I decided against rooting until the updates are out and XDA have sorted out a new 2.1 root for us which meant Barnacle was out for me at present so I have just installed PdaNet on my phone and netbook.
OMG I'm so over excited by it. I am typing this on my netbook using my phone. Yeah so I need to get a life, but I am in de-mob happy mode and the thought that I may be able to use my phone for wifi whilst away has really pleased me. It couldn't have been more simple. Download on my netbook, (had already downloaded it from market on my phone) and follow the on screen instructions.
Anyway it seems to be working pretty well, so just wondered if anyone had had any negative effect using it other than it maybe using up battery power and eating into my 3 gig of data for the month?

I've never expiremented with ad hoc networks, nor do I have an EVO yet, so this might be completely far-fetched, but is it possible? What I'm saying is:
1. Use one of the free/one time fee tethering apps
2. You now have internet on your Windows laptop
3. Set up an ad hoc network to share your internet
4. Connect other devices to that network

I am trying to go wireless and get rid of my DSL I have tried US Cellular tethered, abysmally slow. I tried Verizon, fast enough, very expensive for what you get. Now I am trying Sprint with a Hero and a Samsung Moment to use as phones etc, plus tether to our laptop and desk top to use as a modem. The Sprint store personnel tell me that it can be done, just not something that Sprint will tell me how to do. One of the young ladies tell me that there is an AP that I can download to do it. She uses her Hero as a modem all the time. What would I need to do?
