I know this is usually done the other way round. My uni halls doesn't have wifi, instead it has an ethernet cable for every room. The problem with this is I'm using up my 3g internet on my phone a lot more and i'd like to do things like update my apps and check twitter more but i'm scared i'll run out. By plugging my phone into my laptop, is there a way to borrow the internet from my laptop for my phone?

I know Verizon doesn't offer this officially but will we be able to use PDAnet with the droid to tether to my laptop, and is this something Verizon can detect and will charge you for?

I emailed myself a video from my phone. Downloaded it to my laptop. its a 3gp extension file. What do I play it with? I suppose that if I manually take it off the SD card, it will be the same extension. How do I deal with these files? VLC, QuickTime did not play it. Windows Movie Maker did not open it either. On a Mac it worked fine and flawlessly.

I'm trying to get a subset of my music from my laptop onto my Eris. Can't use iTunes (obviously). iTunes Agent sets up just fine, but then when I hit the "sync" button, says "no connected devices" or words to that effect. (Even though it saw the Eris just fine when going through setup!) Doubletwist doesn't see all my playlists (and it DOES see playlists that were deleted). I have it syncing a couple of playlists, just to see how it goes. Salling Media Sync seemed like a great idea (it saw all the right playlists) but it crashes every time on the first song. And if I take that song out of the sync, it crashes on the "new" first song.
I've looked at MediaMonkey and TuneWiki and (for various reasons) didn't like them. I'd be fine with DoubleTwist if only it saw the real playlists... (and yes, I've searched the forums, apologies in advance if I missed the answer)

I am using the wireless tether function in the new setup that I have since I flashed the new rom. Is there a fee that is charged for that? I don't pay for PDA net and would rather use that if wireless tether is not fee.

When connecting my Evo to a computer, there is an "Internet Sharing" option. I am curious to know, does this cost extra monthly? I know the wifi tether is the extra $30 a month, but will this charge me the same?
I only have interest in rooting my phone if it's the only way to share internet with my Netbook. Wifi isn't all that important to me, and seeing as I've completely and utterly failed at doing the Unrevoked method for rooting... I'm hoping I won't actually have to root my phone after all.

I have a Moto Droid that will be deactivated shortly. Since I am too cheap to pay the $100/month for voice+data, I was wondering if there's a way I can tether the Droid to my current phone via Bluetooth. Obviously I can't use the Droid to make calls this way, but ideally, all the other data apps and services would work... or at least all of the data services not requiring an active Verizon account. How many of the Droid's data services just need "network connection" versus "a Verizon account"? I would simply swap phones and start using the Droid, but until the Droid can safely shoot underwater video without dying this is a non-starter.

I have not looked at Chrome OS yet so I am looking for some feedback on how to tether with it.
Using a non-rooted Droid, is it possible to tether with Chrome OS?
I know there are ways to tether your non-rooted Droid with Linux/Windows/Mac, but the software required will not run under Chrome OS (for example, one of the Linux solutions requires you have the SDK installed).

I tried to test my application on my android phone, but the it can't be able to detect the device compatibility. The debug mode on phone is enabled.
My phone: Motorola.
My ubuntu: 10.04.
IDE: Eclipse.
I even tried to add the following line:
SUBSYSTEMS==husbh, ATTRS{idVendor}==h22b8, ATTRS{idProduct} ==h41dbh, MODE=h0600"
to my /etc/udev/rules.d/90-android.rules.
But every time I tried to run the application, the device can't be detectable.

Do you enable WiFi and then begin tethering or do you just open the tether app? The reason I ask is because I enabled WiFi and then opened the tethering app and my phone froze.

I rooted this week, and my first two roms were alyousis (probably wrong spelling) and Evil Eris, both of which had wired tether built into the OS, and it would appear as an option in the usb selection screen. I was having problems with EE, so I went to the the rooted stock version of 2.1, which is very stable and is running well. I'm having problems with the wired tether in my current rom (I can't remember the dev who makes the stock ROM, I think it's ECLIPS3), but this ROM also doesn't have the dropdown tether option. In EE, tether worked pefectly with my mac and once I installed the drivers it worked perfectly on my XP thinkpad. In the stock ROM, it's the complete opposite. My mac doesn't recognize the eris as a new NIC and nor does XP or 7. Is there a better, more compatible version of wired tether for my ROM, and is there a way to get the same drop-down options that was in EE? Also, is there a fix for the 50% bug present in the eris official ROM?
