First off let me say that I was wrong about this issue. Its not an issue with Easy root it is just something built into android. So I apologize to anyone I argued this subject with but specifically Patch. Its also not an issue with rom manager. This applys to users that after flashing a custom recovery they can boot into it once but the next time you try to boot into recovery it has reverted to stock.
This mostly happens to users of easy root or users that use my guide for rooting using Linux
So for the fix.
Download this file and place it in the root of your sd card.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/install-recovery.sh
Download Terminal Emulator from the market. The one by the dev Jack Palevich.
Open it and type the following commands.
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
dd if=/sdcard/install-recovery.sh of=/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
chmod 550 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
sync
after that just flash the custom recovery of your choice and you should be good to go.
I tested this on my phone and another user tested it for me and it worked for both of us. If anyone has an issue let me know. This issue is so sporadic that its hard to have people test the fix.

I used DroidMod to root when I had 2.01. When 2.1 became available, I "un-rooted" then forced update to 2.1. Well to be honest, it is really slow and laggy. I now want to go back to DroidMod, but nothing I have tried seems to work.

Not saying I want to do this, but can you revert back to 2.0 if you rooted your phone and went to 2.0.1? Just curious if anyone has tried this yet or not.

I just rooted and will soon install a new ROM and kernel which I understand requires a factory reset. There are certain things I want to backup before doing and know of Titanium Backup and MyBackup but wasn't sure if one or the other could do everything I needed. This what I'd like backed up I think that covers everything. Can anyone tell me if either Titanium or MyBackup can do all of this? Anything else I should want backed up (that isn't already by Google) but not thinking of?

some people are saying that a factory reset can help with the lagging after the 2.2 update.. is it ok to do the factory reset with my phone being rooted??? is there any steps i should take before i do the reset?? i get that i should prolly back up the phone settings and what not which i will also have to figure out.. but lets just start with the first question... will factory resetting my phone that is rooted screw anything up?

I've had my Moto Droid since it basically came out last Nov and I have never ever run into a problem with the phone until last night. I had a phone call and after I got off the phone, I noticed my droid reseted itself and it wasn't going back to the home screen. Meaning it would just display the word "Droid" then go right into the droid red eye screen, then right back to the word Droid and just kept repeating itself.
I took the battery out and put it back in, but it kept doing the same thing. I am really not sure what would cause my phone to do this, but the only new change I can think of was that I installed the "TMZ" application to my droid about 3 hours prior to this happening. But the application worked fine and I really hope it wasn't because of that. Is there anything I can do before going to Verizon? I would really hate giving up my phone with all my stuff in it, but I know theres probably not much I can do if I cant even get to the home screen.

There's a lot of instructions floating around for unrooting the droid and what makes the most sense to me is to let the phone handle factory reset thereby bringing the phone back to its original out of the box configuration. By reset I'm referring to booting with power+x vol up+camerra and choosing factory reset from the list. Can someone who's done the reset on a rooted phone confirm that SU permissions are gone after? Also, does the reset delete all apps, system settings and user data and bring the phone back to a true factory state (including going back to OS 2.0)?

I cannot get SPRecovery to recognize my DROID, thus I cannot install it (I have tried every tip known to man). Can I just rename a ROM to update.zip and do it the way I updated to Froyo? Why does this or does this not work and what are the consequences?

Let me start off by saying I did/still do have a nandroid and also a custom ROM zip on my SD. I used the ROM manager application to wipe data/cache, like I have done about 10 times this past week, and flashed a new ROM. So my phone reboots to recovery, "clockwork mod recovery", you have to use this recovery to use ROM manager, and instead of flashing the ROM, it gives me some error message. Now for anyone who isn't familiar with clockwork recovery, you can't flash a nandroid from it, you have to revert back to the stock recovery to flash a nandroid, or at least I do.
So now all I can do is reboot my hero which brings me back to stock 2.1 with no root access. Now I know what your thinking, "just flash your nandroid", but now I can't. To flash my nandroid I would have to reflash the stock recovery image through ROM manager, and now I'm stuck with the clockwork recovery image because ROM manager requires root to swap recoveries, and no ability to nandroid back to where I was before. Basically, unless there is a way to change my recovery back to stock without being rooted currently.

I think where I messed up was I then installed ROM Manager from the market to try to get overclocked. Before I did any searching or downloading for kernels, I tried to do a backup using ROM Managers Clockwork utility. It constantly crashed my phone; I didn't get one successful backup. So I was going to try using SPRecovery, but when I turn off my phone, then turn it on holding the X key, the Motorola logo stays there forever, blinks, and then reappears again. I have to release the X key for it to get passed the logo, but then it just boots normally.I've already uninstalled ROM Manager, but do I need to do anything different so I can use SPRecovery?I'm thinking my phone is confused as to which backup/recovery mode to launch.Did I just mess up my phone?I'm a total noob at this and feel like a moron.

I just got a replacement DX due to random reboots.I read around on the forums that a factory reset would remove any custom themes as well as remove any signs of root.I was unable to achieve either with a factory reset and had to manually install the stock theme files, unroot, and then factory reset. Is this normal? Or was my factory reset not working properly? Is there a way to get back to "out of the box" without having to manually reinstall a stock theme and unroot?

So I just got my droid today, got it rooted, reflashed and booted the recovery image for the nandroid backup and performed a nandroid backup. This was all with the droid plugged into my computer.
Then I downloaded BB and when I went to do an nandroid restore i couldn't get it to boot into the new recovery mode...I keep getting the stock reboot symbols
anyone have any ideas? I just looked in my root of the SD card.....the nandroid folder is there, the back up I made is there, so is there a reason i am getting the stock recovery image when i hold down x and the power button?

I was running CM6, but I had heard some people saying they were getting even better performance from stock 2.2, so I thought I'd give it a try. I downloaded a 2.2 ROM using ROM Manager and it said I could get a rooted or non-rooted version. The only option I was given was to select Superuser Permissions, which seems to be an app but I don't know how to use it. I know for sure I don't have root anymore. How do I get root back? Is there an easy way to simply restore from the nandroid backup I did prior to this? I don't have clockworkmod recovery anymore. I tried to reflash it but I can't because I don't have root.
