Motorola Droid :: Phone Became Jerky After 2.1 Upgrade
Apr 9, 2010
I only had my Droid for one day before the 2.1 upgrade arrived from Verizon.Since then, the originally elegant scrolling has become very jerky. Not a big functional problem, mostly just cosmetic.Disappointing nonetheless. What gives?

I took a few videos over the weekend and when I played them back on my phone, there was a bit of jerkiness, in each video. When played back multiple times, it jerked in the same spot each time. I don't remember if I was running Stagefright or not when I took them, maybe that is a variable.

Been struggling with this since receiving my X. Seems like no matter what player I use the playback is jerky. It's very subtle, almost as if the video is dropping a frame or so every second. I've tried the stock player, Astro, Rockplayer, mPlayer, Zimly, Act, and the list goes on and the problem still persists.
I've encoded (using handbrake) with all of the settings suggested on the boards and have tweaked things on my own trying to find the proper setting, but still no luck. The strange and frustrating thing is that the exact same files play just fine on my 1st gen iPod touch (clearly an inferior piece of hardware) and on my wife's incredible. These encodes are of standard def DVDs at average settings (a full movie is about 1.3gb, all h.264 mp4 files.
I was able to improve playback by rebooting the X and then playing the video, but this doesn't seem like an acceptable solution every time I want to watch something. I tend to encode and watch a lot of stuff on my commute to/from work, and I'd really like to replace my touch with the X, but the media capabilities are falling way short. Considering switching to the Inc as I know it's able to play my media properly, but I'd prefer to keep the X for the larger screen size (though the Inc does seem to feel better when using one-handed). I'm on the fence right now, but if the X can't function as expected then it might be going back. Unfortunately I only have until the 1st to return it so I don't think I can hold out and see if 2.2 fixes this issue.

Wanted to know if this was possible. My upgrade date is 7/12 this is but a phone that I want supposedly comes out in 10/12. Can I extend my contract without using the upgrade eligibility just so that my next upgrade comes 6/12 of 2012?

I have tried 4-5 differant phone numbers and the new 2.1 update on my Telus Milestone on the Bell network will not dial 1-888 numbers, it has a buzz and hangs up pretty quick, won't work from a contact wont work manually entered! No problem with 1-800 and I am not trying any 1-900 we will leave those alone. Wifes work uses a 1-888 for out of area toll free and I have to use on landline, but with cell the regular number is not long distance, so I can still get her through cell. Did a google search can not find any mention perhaps someone else can try a 1-888 number just google for a number lots of weather related ones.

The bundled sample video (Hero_Sample_Video.mp4) is playing nice and smooth. However, when I try to encode a file in the same format with ffmpeg, I get jerky playback. Videos seem to play slower, then quicker, then slower, etc. I'm encoding with the same settings as the sample clip, i.e. H.264, 480x320 and 48 kHz Stereo AAC audio. I have tried low and high bitrates, different quantizers and even two different containers: MP4 and M4V. I fail to obtain smooth playback even with the H.264 settings from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AndroidVideoEncoding aimed at Android phones. Smooth video playback is obviously possible on this phone, since the 30 FPS full screen sample clip plays back without a hitch, so what are the secret flags I need to pass ffmpeg to attain this holy grail?

Frankly, I'm fine with the video quality. It could be a lot better but I don't use my phone for anything serious. The audio quality is horrid. I pulled a video into MediaCoder to find out why. That is 12.8kbps at 8,000hz sampling rate. To put this in perspective; A low quality MP3 is 64kbps at 44.1khz (44,100hz). That is 5 times the bit rate and more than 5 times the sampling rate.
A decent quality MP3 is at the very least 128kbps. The audio that the Evo camcorder app is 1/5th the quality of a crappy MP3. This is a rather simple software fix. I'm not a programmer but I know how audio and video codecs work and I see no reason for this limitation. The phone can record excellent quality audio. Just download a recording app and try it. HTC or a third party developer needs to get on this. The reason the video is a bit jerky is that it is recorded at 10.01 FPS...

I'm getting some very jerky scrolling while using the code below to create a ListView from a Cursor. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or any way to improve the performance of this ListView?
CODE:.............
Note: bookmarkStore.getCursor() returns an unmanaged cursor from a sqlite database containing the columns from bookmarksColumns.

With every custom rom i flash on my htc one x i have this little but annoying problem: the notification dropdown animation is jerky. It doesen't happen in every situation. For example in settings screen it's very smooth, this issue is present especially on the home screen. Except for go launcer, on every other launcher the animation is very slow and laggy. I post this here because i discovered that this "bug" is present also on other phones. It's annoyng and it makes the phone look slow and old
Another little thing: is there a way to disable the dim effect during notification pulldown? I think it can slow down the animation a little

I want to know how I can get a new Android phone without using an upgrade (I don't have one). I would prefer a Moto first gen Droid, or a Droid 2, but right now I'm waiting until June to get a new upgrade because the people at Verizon seem to think that two years is not too long for a smart phone upgrade, especially a Android phone. Any way I can replace my Eris and still have my next upgrade intact?

Will it be possible to upgrade the Hero from v1.5 to v2.0 when it comes out? I'm thinking of the HTC sense software, will that be in the way? Is it possible to remote the HTC sense software an replace it with regular google android if one want?

Doing a search here and elsewhere, I am confused -- is android 2.0 out yet? I have my HTC Hero via Sprint and the 2.0 upgrade is not yet available on their download site. I called Sprint customer service and they said it would NOT negate my Sprint support if I did an upgrade to 2.0 but they could not give me details on how or where to upgrade.

Ok not sure where I'm going wrong. Here's everything I have done. Starting with stock DX
- Used UniversalRoot to gain root access
- Installed and ran Titanium Backup, backup saved to SDcard
- Reran UniversalRoot and unrooted
- Flashed with SBF, seemed successful but my user data was still intact
- Booted to stock system recovery, wiped data/factory reset & wipe cache
- apply sdcard:update.zip
E:signature verification failed Installation aborted

I was thinking about getting the Pro version, but when I try to install it, it says install failed. I figured it was because I was running LP at that time, so I switched to another launcher and then tried to uninstall LP, but could not find it.So I have LP, I just can't install it. Any clue on what's up?

Over the week I did some research on upgrading my DROID and my wife's Eris both to 2.1. I downloaded the files I needed and was planning on upgrading both phones. For the DROID I ran into a problem, my computer won't recognize the RSDLite program that I guess I need to upgrade my DROID. So I am not sure how to do it. I have BB v0.9 downloaded, or is there a better 2.1 available to use without rooting? For my wife's Eris it was so simple. Basically I downloaded the .zip file, mounted the phone and put the file on the sd card, then restarted the phone. I just followed the on screen steps, and bam, now my wife's Eris has 2.1.Is there not a way that is that simple to update the DROID. I am kind of jealous because my wife has 2.1 on her Eris, and I have the better phone that is now running a lower software version. Anyone want to help me out?

i have a deadspot on my screen in the bottom left hand corner. so anytime i want to hit the Shift button or type "z" or "c" i have turn my phone sideways. then as soon as i start typing that way i have to turn my sideways again to type "m" or hit the NUM button.i signed a 2 year contract with Verizon after they convinced me to buy the Eris instead of the MotoDroid. after this one it will be my 3RD Eris. the earpiece in the first one died within a month and this one is the buggiest, slowest, most horrible batter life ever phone (not to mention a dead spot in the screen). are there any chances they'll upgrade me to a better phone and this p.o.s.? or when you bring it in to get it replaced do they just ship you a new crappy Eris?

I have the original droid with 2.1 (still haven't got update) the phone has some problems like, restarting, cant update certain apps, unresponsive. i just got the phone in may 2010 an im starting to think its getting out dated. I once had it rooted to 2.2 but went back to stock for OTA 2.2 . But my question is, that do u think i can call verizon and tell them my problems, say its my 3rd droid and im getting tired of it. Since there not making the oringinal droid anymore do u think they'll let me upgrade to Droid X with little or no fee? i got the idea from another post, reading that someone had success with this trick?

Let me begin by saying I am non rooted. I do not wish to root.I apoligize in advance if this is a repeat but I have yet to find an answer anywhere regarding this issue.Let me also say I am sorry in advance for my horrid ghrammer and spelling. On to the show.I have searched and scoured and burned my eyeballs trying to find a way to upgrade to FRG22. I am one of those who have been having lag and issues with my 2.2 upgrade. (it is sexy as hell though to look at and flash is ok. Not awesome of course. Fast moving video and demanding games and FLASH based video arnt the greatest, some damn choppy enough to make ur stomach turn but its a start and further than we were a month ago) Anyways back to the task at hand.I have downloaded the FRG22-Release or ODEXED version of FRG22 and wish to install it on my Droid. I have downloaded 2 zip files for this and renamed them update.zip and tried it with them in their original file names. I get the e:verification sig error and install aborted each time. I also did not have BOTH on the phone at the same time. IF i applied one I removed the other.
I noticed between these 2 they are different file sizes as well so I dont know if that has anything to do with it. I followed Tridents Instructions to get to the menu to install the update. And YES i did use the FRG22 zip files to update not the original froyo release trident has as the first post on his forced update.I would just like to know 2 things. 1.)Is it possible for NON ROOTED users to update to FRG22. and 2.) If it is and I have the correct file. Which do I use and what am I doing wrong to not make this work out for myself?

Currently I have the Moto Droid. I am thinking about upgrading to the Droid X but not sure if the upgrade is that beneficial. I really enjoy the flexibility with having a rooted device and from what I've read the DX is going to be a phone with little hope for rooting much like the milestone. My question to all of you is what do you recommend? And if I should upgrade, give me a few reasons why.
