KitKat 4.4 :: Is There A Way To Put Phone In DND Mode Like IOS
Apr 18, 2014
in iOS, I can set a DND mode for a specific time automatically so the phone will not ring or alert me during that specified time. This is particularly useful for a recurring event (meeting or sleeping time).
Is there a way to do that in 4.4.2 without downloading a new app in Google Play? It would be nice to be able to do that automatically so i do not have to silent the phone every single time for that recurring event.

Any app that can quickly switching between location modes? I often need the High Accuracy mode for navigation, but would rather be able to quickly go back to Battery Saving any other time. A widget switch would be very useful.

I have noticed that there are a lot of different big name browsers on Android yet coincidentally not a single one of them has been updated with a simple new API which allows for immersive mode full screen.
How and why has Chrome out of all the browsers not been updated with this?

I've encountered a very strange problem for programmatically turning on/off the airplane mode.I'm aware that it's one of the secure settings, and my app is a system app that is correctly signed.
However, I'm not able to correctly turn on/off the airplane mode.I have the following codes: (checked value is from onCheckedChanged callback of a check box UI)
int isAirplaneModeOn = checked ? 1 : 0;
Settings.Global.putInt(mContext.getContentResolver(), Settings.Global.AIRPLANE_MODE_ON, isAirplaneModeOn);
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_AIRPLANE_MODE_CHANGED);
intent.putExtra("state", checked);
mContext.sendBroadcast(intent);
The line where it calls Settings.Global.putInt(....) works, because we can see that the airplane mode's check box in the android's settings app will changes as we change this value from our app, so we know that our app is indeed a system app. Otherwise, it will throw a SecurityException at this line.
However, we're getting "Permission Denial: not allowed to send broadcast android.intent.action.AIRPLANE_MODE", at the line where it calls mContext.sendBroadcast(...). I have no idea why this fails while Settings.Global.putInt works.
One last note is that we're using Android 4.4.2 (KitKat).

It is a big gap currently IMO, especially when you see how well it works on Safari/iOS.

When I try to start the device normally it gets stuck on the loading screen with the animation.
I go into that bootloader mode and try to restore it to wipe/restore it to factory settings but I get this: [URL] .....
I must have done something wrong when trying to root the phone...what I've done and why wiping the data isn't working.

I've searched how to disable immersive mode in KitKat, and found nothing but topics on how to enable immersive mode.
In some games, immersive mode is annoying, since you'll swipe an area of the game interface near the immersed status bar, and the status bar will appear while gaming.
Is there an app, mod, or setting that can disable immersive mode?

Just upgraded to Kitkat. Now when I come out of airplane mode there is no way to enter my Sim pin code. The only solution I've found is to reboot it.
Before kitkat I'd have to select an app like tasker or data manager before it'd ask for the pin. This no longer happens though. HTC One

I went through all the settings and could not find a way to configure the phone to speak the SMS, the caller id, etc....when I am driving.
On my other phone, a samsung galaxy s3 from verizon with android 4.3, there is a "driving mode". I thought it was a true android capability, but could it be a samsung feature instead ?In any case how do I get the Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 to do the same ? can I get it to do it using an NFC tag...

Seems fairly straight forward Settings > Apps > Uninstall. But is there any reason, or a good idea to boot into recovery mode and wipe cache?

Just FYI in case anyone wants to know: For download mode, with the phone turned off, fold the number 1 key on the QWERTY keyboard and the power button simultaneously For recovery mode, with the phone turned off, hold Volume Down, CAmera, and Power simultaneously. You navigate with volume UP/DOWN, select with HOME, Menu toggles to "Manual Mode", whatever that it.

I do not know if this is possible but it should be. How do I put my actual phone on my PC? Yes you heard me right. I have tried VNCserver, SnaPpea and others but that is really just to back up files and maybe use texting...I want it all, I want to see my phone on my PC screen and use all of its functions, including making a phone call. I do not want to use 1,000 diff apps to accomplish this..If this has not been done than lets talk and get this out there..I can see where it has been done the other way around because people are glued to their phones but why not this way?

I have an unrooted S4 on ATT. I bought it 4.2.2, but I was given the 4.4.2 upgrade a few weeks ago. It's my understanding that KitKat devices will have a reverse phone lookup automatically built into the phone, displaying the name of any business that has that number listed on Google Places/Local.
It doesn't seem to work on my phone. Is this feature for KitKat devices moving forward where 4.4 is native to the phone, or are any devices on that version able to use that feature?
I can't seem to enable or or get it to work...I did some shopping yesterday and had customer services at a few stores call my phone just to see if it worked, but alas it did not. I need to do a factory reset because "old data and new data do not mix" but I have serious trepidations about doing the factory reset because I am skeptical it would change anything. The update changed enough on my phone, I find it hard to believe that some features would work, and others wouldn't.
Someone else in the aforementioned thread said they have the Google edition and enabled "Caller ID by Google". However, Under Call Settings>Additional Settings>CallerID> there are 3 options, each with a radio button: Network Default, Hide Number, Show Number. Currently Network Default is enabled, but no mention of Google.

After updating my firmware, my phone rebooted. After it rebooted, my screen was black. It was on, but nothing would show on the screen beyond the top bar. Frustrated I turned off my phone, and since then it's been unable to move beyond the "Samsung". I've been at it for over an hour to no avail. It was fully charged before the update, and was charging throughout. I have tried many different things in order to get it to start, but nothing has worked. I have had no problems leading up to this update. (Also, this was not a virus, because all of my other Android-using friends have gotten it...and many have faced a number of problems as well.) --Samsung Galaxy S3 user

When sending an MMS through the stock app (I have a Nexus 4) or SMS from the Google Voice app, why do home phone numbers show? It clutters the list and makes it harder to pick the number/name I want. Is there a way to have only mobile numbers show?

My Nexus 4 (purchased directly from Google) automatically downloaded the latest update today. I installed it, and everything crashed. My phone is now caught in a continual re-boot loop. It gets as far as the little dead robot, and then stops with the message "No command", holds for a bit, and then starts the reboot again. Has been doing this for the last half hour or so.
How can I break the cycle, or reset, or something? Anything?

I don't have KitKat yet, but I was reading the dialpad doesn't automatically pop up when you hit the phone button. Is there a way to automatically make the dial pad pop up instead of the search? If I want to search for a phone number I'll go into the internet. When I click on the phone icon I want the dialpad to be there. If there isn't a way to fix this then I might not upgrade my phone when the time comes to upgrade.

my phone has been randomly spazzing out. I have a LG G2 with 4.4.2
It will slide left to right, open and close apps, etc. without me touching it.
It will go periods of time without doing this, then not stop doing it for a good few minutes. i did just factory reset it, but it is still doing the same thing.

noticed something weird with KitKat, and confirmed this on two different phones (Nexus 5 and Moto G but running latest KitKat 4.4.2). On occasion (not every time) the phone seems to auto dial someone after you've ended a call with someone else.
My wife reported the problem first with her Moto G. At first I thought she might just be accidentally hitting a button after calling someone (this is her first smart phone and first touch screen phone) but it's happened several times for her. Final catch was today when I clearly had it happen to me (it also appears it may have happened before once or twice on my phone). I had called someone using my bluetooth in my car, at the end of the call I pushed the hangup button on the steering wheel, and the call ended. Then my wife picked up the phone to call another person and we both noticed it was calling some other friend of ours (that I had txt'd with maybe 2 hours before). It had just started calling this person for no reason. We quickly ended the call (hopefully it didn't bug them), but wow is that annoying.
It seems to happen every once in a while right after hanging up with another call. It seems to call someone in either your recent call or txt history. I'm not sure what might trigger it as it doesn't happen every time, and I'm not sure what number it chooses to call (though it does appear to be someone you recently called or txt'd).

there are those of us, who due to whatever reason (helmet cams, preference for posture, etc) want to record videos in portrait mode.
What happens (on my sgs2) is that the video records just fine in whatever resolution I pick... but it records it 90 degrees rotated to the right.
The solution that is usually offered is that "you can rotate it after!" yes... but then you have to CROP part of the image and lower the resolution. 1920 x 1080 recordings end up having to be cropped so that half of the view is cut out , or even more if you are maintaining a real aspect ratio.
The questions about "why not just hold it sideways", are just as pointless as the statement by steve jobs telling iphone4 users that they were holding their phones wrong.
is this something that can be remedied ? or has google decided that people should only record videos when their phones are in landscape mode?
i understand that we cant see landscape resolution in portrait mode; but can't we just have a viewport into the camera, but record in properly oriented landscape mode? so that playback on a computer will show the full resolution, even though we will only see part of it on the phone..

Over the last week or so I've been obsessed with trying to get my hero into sleep mode, in order to save battery. For those who don't know about this, there are many threads around the net telling of a fix for the messages bug, which prevents the phone entering sleep. It's supposed to reduce CPU usage, thus saving battery.
Now, I've followed the methods of many people who claim to have done this successfully, down to a tee, but for the life of me, I can't get it to work. For some reason my awake time is always at 100%. It's now at the pont of driving me mad, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried and failed to do the fix. If anyone needs background info on this problem, I'll post a link up later, as I'm sending this via my phone at the minute.

I'm not sure what's going on with my Evo, but all of a sudden it's been deciding to put itself in silent mode for no apparent reason and I'm missing tons of calls because of it. I will turn the sound back on and then all of a sudden it's off after a couple of hours for no apparent reason. I don't want to have to return the phone, but I'm not sure what other options I have at this point. Has anyone heard of this issue?
