HTC Desire :: Which Takes Priority ISP Or WiFi
Aug 1, 2010
Sitting at home . WiFi in full operation and showing as such on the Desire. If I use my Desire what will it prioritise: My home WiFi connection or the ISP's data connection? Both have strong signals everywhere in the house and both are equally fast. Important to know as don't want any isp billing surprises!

I have a factory unlocked HTC Desire with the official 2.2 froyo firmware installed. When I turn on the wifi using the inbuilt HTC wifi widget, it takes about 10-15 seconds before the phone connects to my wifi router and the wifi icon is shown in the notification bar. I am using a Dlink dir-655 router. The settings that I have on the router are as follows:-
wireless mode: 802.11g only
encryption: wpa2 personal AES
mac filtering on (phone's mac address has been added to the list)
SSID is hidden
Other devices such as my laptop and nintendo wii connect to the wifi router within seconds.

My Hero takes a long time to connect to my home wifi. I usually go in to the settings and hit "Scan" repeatedly before it connects. Sometimes it fails connect, and I have to go into Settings to try again. Is there a way/app to scan automatically or re-attempt to connect again? Maybe there's something I'm not thinking of?

I have 2 Access Points in my house broadcasting 2 different SSIDs, my Droid can connect to both successfully but it likes the one that is farthest away better. Most of the time I have to force connect the one Im sitting next too. Is there a way to set a priority on which AP it connects too?

Just two quick questions: When connected to wifi, do internet connections made on the device automatically go via wifi as opposed to 3g etc and if not then is there a way to organize which wireless connection 'methods' have higher priority (i am worried about excessive data costs). Second question is: Is there any multi tasking support on the Magic and if so then how do you switch between applications?

I am trying to to use WiFi API to set priorities to created profiles. I am using the priority field of WifiConfiguration to set this information. I have found out that no matter what priority I set, Android always tries to re-connect to the latest access point that it was connected to. Here is what I do: 1) I create a profile A with a very low priority (0) 2) I create a profile B with high priority (100) 3) I connect to profile A 4) I turn Wi-Fi off 5) I turn Wi-Fi back on 6) In the scan Android sees both A & B 7) Android connects to A, even though its priority is much lower. Does anyone has a work around for this?

I have got myself an HTC Desire as my Orange upgrade. The tariff is really good for me and I'm blown away by how good the phone is. I have been using an iPhone for work and asides from the games on the application store, the Desire is just so much better. So I'm working my way slowly through these threads. Anything I should do as a priority now that I have my new handset.

I recently purchased a USED S4 Active, and I am having an unusual problem with it.
I will leave my house in the morning. ALl during my drive to work, my data does't work. It's on, it just doesn't have "4g" at the top, and I can't use the internet, etc. Toggling the data does not work, neither does resetting the phone. About the time I get to work (after about a 15 minute drive), my data pops back on.
Today, at work, my phone connected to a stray wifi connection (One that I have used before, so my phone remembered it) just for a minute or two. Once it disconnected from the wi-fi, my mobile data was gone. Just like when I leave my house: It was gone for about 15 minutes, just like before, and then just popped back on like everything was OK.
I don't THINK this is an issue with my particular phone, but if it is I need to know so I can return it. I've searched high and low, but no one else seems to have had this problem. So I figured I would turn to the best!
Model: Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
Android version: 4.2.2
AT&T phone, but unlocked and working under the T-Mobile network.

Trying to run WIFI TETHERING, but SU just sits there and doesn't seem to do anything, but maybe force close. Running Smash rom. Honestly, I would probably switch roms, but I don't know how to do that. Someone else rooted my phone. Also, I'd love to get rid of stock apps.

This is my first post, so please be gentle. My Desire takes more than 5 minutes to shut down when I turn it off at night. Is this normal, or is it likely that a rogue app is preventing a speedy shut down?

My phone has a really annoying habit. Every night before I go to sleep. I switch it to silent mode. But if a call or a text message comes through overnight it vibrates. The next morning I find that the phone is now in vibrate mode. I did have Foxy Ring installed, although it was not activated. I wondered whether it could have anything to do with this, but I've now removed it from the phone, but the irritating behaviour persists. Short of turning the phone off overnight, how can I get a quiet night's sleep?

When using position based apps on my new Desire (Android 2.1) I can't help but notice that finding the location always takes forever (>1 minute after switching GPS on).My old HTC HD (Windows Mobile 6.1) was much quicker in providing a location after switching on GPS. The trick was, that the HTC HD had a pre-installed application "QuickGPS" that regularly downloaded some data that apparently helped in locating the satellites and/or calculating the position. On my old device I thus had a valid position typically in less than 10 seconds after switching GPS on.I haven't found any similar utility for Android and I don't want to have GPS active all the time for battery reasons. Are there any similar tools or other "tricks" that can help the GPS subsystem to provide the location quicker?

Up to now i have switched it off for 2 reasons. 1. because once it didn't read my headphone being connected, so it needed a restart.2. it was giving no signal at all, whatsoever. On both of these occasions, the phone took as much as 5 minutes to switch off, why? I always kill the applications with multi task, so it cant be the apps that are running.

I have been having an annoying problem whereby my phone takes somewhere between 2 and 10 or so minutes to connect to my car's hands free kit. The handsfree is a factory fit bluetooth unit in an Audi. I've had the car over 2 years and with my previous phones (SE W810i, K750i and C905) the connection was always made within 15 seconds of turning the ignition on. With the Desire it takes so long sometimes that I can have reached my destination before it connects!

I have a branded Desire, with Telstra software. These last few months have seen my desire constantly rebooting itself. This occurs 2-3 times a day without fail. It not only restarts itself, but takes a good 10-15 minutes to fully boot - constantly 're-rebooting'. I have removed ALL after-market applications, removed all data from the memory card, so it's back to how it was straight out the box (with the exception of user data - contacts, messages etc.). I don't feel comfortable with debranding / rooting the phone. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the restarts, and a possible way around it? There is no definitive process or application involved in the restarts, it is entirely random.

My HTC is really slow! When I receive a new message it takes about 30seconds to even open it, then a further 30 or so to wait for the keyboard to respond. I have tried deleting the messages from my inbox and starting fresh, but am slightly cautious about just giving it a factory reset!
Also, when i am finished a phone call, as I take the phone away from my ear, it flashes on and off, meaning that I can't actually put the phone down! The only way to do it is to take the battery out of the back and start again!
Overall, I'm not very impressed with the phone, its supposed to be suitable for a businessman, but I can't even get it to work as a personal user!
We have 4 other people in the house with the same phone and none of them are experiencing these problems.

I'm having to move networks from Virgin back to o2.
I'll be returning the Virgin Desire and just received the o2 Desire today.
Setting it up went well, accounts added etc. but I'm having trouble with the WiFi - I can't disable it, every time I do it switches itself back on - I'm assuming that's something to do with the o2 firmware and it wouldn't be a big deal if the WiFi worked properly
I set it to install all my apps, but wouldn't over Wifi, only over 3G, I can't browse the internet or check for software updates in settings... I've got 2 email accounts set up - Gmail & Exchange (just as I did on the other handset), and it's just told me it can't sync to the Exchange server now though it seems to have been fine so far...
Yet I've just sent myself a test email over WiFi successfully - it appeared straight away in the webmail and then back on the handset, so some part of it's working...

I decided to try the WiFi hotspot available through 2.2. GREAT! Actually worked quite a bit better than I thought it would. Only trouble is, ... now I'm back at home, it fails to connect to the home network.
+ Restarting phone
+ Re-entering password
+ Forgetting network + refinding
WiFi sees the network, says "Connecting", comes up "Failed to connect", "Scanning" and loops on that sequence. I know the router's working because this laptop is using it right now

I have two apps that use a service to upload and download files and data. I've noticed that when the service gets very busy, it can cause the UI to block, up to the point that Android shows a "force quit/ wait" popup. In order to avoid that, I run tasks in a service at a lower priority. This way, the service will never cause the UI to hickup. Also, the service stops if the app hasn't been used for a certain number of minutes. I don't want to keep resources if the user isn't using my app.I have found that some of my users run apps that run services permanently at normal priority. Such a service starts at phone switch on, and keeps running indefinitely, downloading vast amounts of data. My policy of being nice to other apps doesn't pay off: these agressive third party services push my service away so it never gets anything done. As one of my users told me, my app has hickups, until he kills the service of this app X, after which my app runs smoothly, snappy, and fast.
My question is, should I be nice to other apps and to the UI in my own app, or should I just run a service and agressively take all resources I need - or don't need? This is one issue where Android is different from iPhone. We can run services, but by doing so, we can cause damage to other peoples apps. Of course, my "question" doesn't require an answer. I'm just curious after what other people think, what your experience here is.

Let me say this with an example. Lets say, my activity A is being executed, meanwhile another activity B gets launched. By default, acivity B will come on top of activity A. My requirement is that I want to keep A on top. Only activities such as phone, lock screen and home screen can come on top of me not other activities unless my activity closes.

Is there a standard way in Android to create an unkillable service with very high priority, assuming you have complete access to the device (as in you're building your own device on something like a beagleboard, not just installing an app)? I'm playing around with sip phone stuff, and it seems like just doing it as an app isn't going to work if you want high voice quality. (Assuming you want to be able to let the user switch away from the actual sip app and use different apps; all the sip phones I've tried have failed to maintain decent audio if you're multitasking.) Or would you just run the phonecall software outside Android in a normal Linux process and communicate with Android apps over sockets?

I am a newbie to Android so please excuse me if this is a silly question or one that has been answered many times before. When connecting to and using the Internet, I am trying to find out what determines the connection that the phone will use when more than one connection is available: Wifi, 3G etc. Is there a standard priority order for connection and use? can the user set the priority order? Usually I would expect the wifi connection to be preferred for reasons of speed and cost. I have looked at my phone user guide and the official Android user guide but cannot find any information about this.
