HTC Incredible :: WVGA OLED Screen - Not AMOLED?
Apr 17, 2010
I've noticed that all of the official literature regarding the Incredible describes the screen as WVGA OLED -not AMOLED. Can a screen be OLED without AM (active matrix) technology - and if so, what will the difference be between the Incredible's screen and the N1's AMOLED display?

Is this possible for the Incredible? Who wants to install the apk first? Apparently the black uses no power when the screen is on. This guy designed notifications via the screen rather than the LED light.

I have an Incredible and a friend just got the Evo. I also went to HTC's Evo launch party in NYC so I've had my fair share of time with it and I have to say, IMHO, I was shocked at the difference in AMOLED vs LCD.
I never really gave much thought to it and I always thought it wouldn't really make a difference but HOLY COW.
It was the first and glaring thing to me whenever comparing the phones. Everything from the home screen to widgets to photos, videos, web sites. It was quite dramatic. The LCD on the Evo always looked kind of washed out since I've become used to the AMOLED.
The viewing angles, crispness, deep blacks and color saturation on the AMOLED is a huge win for me.

I wrote a reading software. I implemented the page turning effect when user tap the screen to turn to next/pre page. The display is ok on G1 (320X200 size) but it can not works well on Droid(480*854 size), the font looks a litter fuzzy, not clear as G1. I explain my codes for page turning:
1) create a canvas A
2) create bitmap.
3) set bitmap on canvas A
4) draw the new page content on canvas A
5) the current showing page has been saved in bitmap before since we do from step 1) to setp 4),
6) In order to implement the turning effect of scrolling from left to right, I draw the old bitmap part and draw the new bitmap part until the whole new bitmap has been drawn. all of bitmaps are drawing by canvas.drawBitmap() in onDraw() function.
7) when step 6) is done, it means the new page has been shown on screen, and the bitmap has been saved to use in next page turning.
The above is the whole actions for my page turning. On G1, no problem. But on Droid phone, the font is not clear, I tried if I directly draw text by canvas in OnDraw() not through bitmap, It is ok, but it can not implement the page turning effect that I need. I don't know why, could you please help me to take a look and tell me where is wrong or miss some steps?

I'm developing an Activity with a simple LinearLayout with a button. When I try the activity on my hardware (WVGA 480x800 screen) the activity only fills the standard size (480x320) while the OS itself fills the whole screen.
What could be the issue.

The problem I am having is that when I run a FWVGA or WVGA sized emulator it sometimes runs at a MDPI size instead of HDPI. Here is an example with pictures. I create the AVD with the proper hw.lcd.density setting and screen size and it randomly does this. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. I used to be able to just delete the AVD and create it over again and it would fix itself for a while but now it's getting worse.

So battery life isn't a huge issue with me, but I want to use a live wallpaper. So my question is what color uses more power on an amoled screen? Black or white?

Are you kidding me ? Not only can I see this screen outside in the sunlight, I can see it outside in the sunlight WITH MY SUNGLASSES ON. Coming from the Dinc I had a very hard time seeing that screen in the sunlight. How could I ever go back to any other kind of screen? This SF reminds me of when I first started dating my wife. Wasn't the greatest when I first met her, but the more I got to know her the more I couldn't get enough of her.

I've got a Nexus S phone with an amoled screen and I was wondering, is it possible to make it so that when the screen is turned off, a clock appears on the screen?
I remember some nokia phone that also had an amoled screen and that had a neat feature; whenever the screen was turned off, there was an always-on clock that'd show up, and since the clock was small and the rest of the screen stayed black, it didn't drain the battery.
I mean, that'd be a pretty cool thing to have on amoled android phones, no?

I searched many forums but there seems to be no clear way to identify the screen type other than by eye. Clue #1: The box has no mention of AMOLED. Clue #2: P/N is 99HKZ009-00 Clue #3: Made in China Clue #4: Unbranded, unlocked phone bought from a US retailer. My plan is to root. According to what I've read so far, the method depends on the type of screen, SLCD or AMOLED. I need to know for sure, so as not to brick the phone.

I know that HTC Desire has not been released yet, but reading its specification it will use AMOLED type of screen. From what I read, AMOLED could prolong battery live (reduce power consumption) when using more black colors. Organic LED - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

So I don't own a captivate, but I do own another Galaxy S phone, the Vibrant. The vibrant forums, people aren't really responding to the blue tint. So i'm wondering if you guys on the captivate have noticed that everything that should be white, such as a white broweser window, is actually tinted blue?If this is your first smartphone you won't notice probably, but if you own a prior LCD smartphone, try putting your screens next to eachother. Does the Galaxy S look blue?

I don't know if there has been anymore elaboration on the subject of the impending switch to LCD for the Incredibles or when it was supposed to go into effect, but I may or may not have stumbled onto something. I, finally, received my phone today. I haven't turned it on yet, as I have it sitting on the charger for another 3 hours. However, I did happen to flip through some of the booklets that came with the phone. If everyone could gather up their "Product Safety & Warranty Brochure," we can compare and see if there is a difference. On page 8 under the "Cleaning" bullet, it says "blah blah blah blah, but NEVER use water to clean the LCD screen." If any of you got your phones weeks or months earlier and it says "LED" for you, the switch may have already happened. As I said, I haven't turned the phone on yet and this is the only thing I have to go off of right now.

Did you see that Bell wireless is discontinuing their HTC Legend phones because of screen shortages. They are not taking any more orders for Legends'. Hmmmm.... makes me wonder how long before our incredible Incredibles' follow. We could soon all be owners of a very rare breed though! Might increase re-sale value.

I bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy S on 8th October 2010 in Bangalore, India. two weeks later my screen developed a bright white line on the bottom. ( see pic attached ) I have not dropped or mishandled the phone in any way. I took it to the nearest samsung service centre... they told me that the display needs to be replaced ... They say that the phone display is out of stock and they dont know by when it will be available.
I feel really cheated ... after purchasing such an expensive phone one never expects it to malfunction in less than 2 weeks. And samsungs customer care reps very conveniently replied that they dont know when it will be in stock and to keep in touch via calls. So much for buying an amazing phone.

Seems like most phones these days have a gimmick. My Vibrant came with Avatar preloaded and it is stunning on the AMOLED screen.
I would be surprised if some movie weren't thrown in on the phone on launch.

Sometimes when I run a FWVGA or WVGA emulator it causes my app to run in compatibility mode (small inner rectangle instead of full screen / MDPI instead of HDPI). If I delete the emulator and recreate another one this usually solves the problem. My app can support HDPI, MDPI, and LDPI screens. My Android Manifest Support Screens says Small Screens = true Normal Screens = true Large Screens = false Resize able = true Any Density = true, Usually the front page looks like this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hmNcPpDB070/TCmGaxEdS-I/AAAAAAAAAEQ/g0tlmQu. But when it screws up it looks like this: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hmNcPpDB070/TCmGvlOUqtI/AEY/mLUVGxN. Does anyone know what causes this or if there is a solution? It's not a major problem, just annoying.

This seems like a simple problem to me, but I can't figure it out. I have a fullscreen layout that displays differently if the screen is taller (854 instead of 800 pixels). I've tried putting the xml into layout-notlong-hdpiand layout-long-dpi respectively, but both my WVGA and FWVGA emulators go for the "long" version (as described in the doc).
Is there any way to distinguish between the two besides using the deprecated -800x480/-854x480 qualifiers?

I have been able to scale-up my application in WVGA skins pretty easily for my app.But in WVGA mode the widget seem to be not working as desired.Sometimes the widget just gives the message "No more room in the Home Screen" even though there is space. Some times it takes up the whole screen without considering the size mentioned in the configuration files. And even strangely sometimes it hust gives me the desired behaviour. Are there are any know issues for the WVGA mode as far as widgets are concerned.
