HTC Incredible :: Hydra Kernals - Get Most Power And Battery Saving?
Oct 2, 2010
i was wondering about the hydra kernals. I installed the latest overvolt hydra kernal. My question is when you go into idle, does it underclock for you? Or do you have to install undervolt to do that? Also can you install both overvolt and undervolt at the same time? (not literally at the same time but have both kernals at once to get the most power and battery saving?)

I'm bout to root, and wanna run a Hydra kernel, but I wanna know if the recent OTA could mess with the way the kernels work. More specifically the fact that the OTA brought 802.11N with it, yet the kernel has the option for it. Should I not use the Hydra with N? Just want to make sure having the OTA won't mess with any functionality of a custom kernel.

I rooted today (unrevoked 3 + forever) and I did a nandroid backup (thank god) and titanium backup. I tried to flash the undervolt (0.5) and overclocked (0.1, #1) hydra kernals on the phone but it gets stuck at the boot up screens. Am I doing something wrong? I put the zip on the root of my SD card and used Clockwork to flash the zip file. Should I just upload the HTC .32 kernal?

I have 2.1 stock and I don't really want to clear everything for 2.2 (can I upgrade like an OTA to 2.2?) so I want to install a hydra kernal for better battery life. The 2.15 radio update wouldnt stick on my phone for some reason, and 0.5 or 1.0 hydra kernals won't work with 1.0 radio. Is there a hydra version that will?

Anybody have recommendations for a rom and kernel combo that would give some good battery life to our battery vampire of a phone?
I'm a heavy user, and I just think the incredible can be more efficient than it currently is.
I'm running the Skyraider 2.5.2 vanilla rom and King Kernel BFS #1.
The King Kernel is great when the phone is on standby, but when I am doing some web browsing or more, it drains the battery very fast.
I've also tried the Hydra Kernel stock speed undervolt. That seemed to give moderately better battery life than the regular .32 kernel.
I don't care about overclocking, 1ghz is plenty fast for me.

Just thinking, should the Push Gmail use less battery power than "Pull" such as Yahoo Mail. It would seem that the pull process is having to go look every 15 min and the Push process is merely sending it as it arrives.

I am trying to find the best ICS rom for the HTC sensation when it comes to the battery life. I understand the roms on here are works in progress, I would just like to find a good rom that isn't too hard on the battery life.

Android has provided Power management framework for saving batterlife. But this is limited to screen/key lights. I am exploring ways to enhance this scheme for other use cases like camera, media playback by changing CPU frequency. I would like to know what support is available for this from Android kernel.

last week i installed the leaked OTA and i really like it so i decided to stick with it. I have been debating for a while whether or not to root. Well today i finally took the plunge and had zero issues. Then i decided to install the 1.15 ghz OC Hydra Kernel and it is awesome, makes the phone really snappy. I havent seen any lag at all. Well the only issue i have found is my camera wont work. I open it and it is just a black screen. At first i do have my normal options, i can choose everything on the left slider and the zoom, flash buttons. Also i noticed the brightness gets turned up. But its like there is a lens cap on it. It does not display anything the lens is seeing. I tried rebooting and it still did the same thing. Is this possibly becuase i installed the leaked OTA first and the Kernel is not compatible? Has anyone else seen this?

Is there anyway to tell that my phone is actually running at the 1.15 overclock? Also how could I tell that it is under clocked when idle? I just want to make sure things are working smoothly.

I have a rooted Stock 2.1 Dinc. Went to use the hydra kernel #1 and it put me into a boot loop. I am restoring my phone from backup so not a big deal but does anyone know why this may have occurred? I don't really need the overclock just thought I'd try it.

Alright, I installed JagerRom 3.2 and I love it. Only problem I have is that there is no gmail app and I don't like the k-9 mail app. Is there any way to get the gmail app back Also, with a custom rom can I still install a hydra kernel? because the undervolted kernel would be nice to install.

What is the difference between "automatic brightness adjustment" and "power saving mode" which has the description "save power by adjusting image and adjusting LCD brightness"? Which one should I have on to conserve battery? It sounds like the do the same thing.

I'm currently having an issue where my browser shuts down when I open certain websites. In particular. androidforums.com. The strange thing is it doesn't force close. The screen just goes black momentarily, then I'm back at my home screen. It's happening on all browsers, so it's not an application issue. I've never had this issue before, and I recently installed Hydra Kernel #3 (UV/OV 1.15 w/ N). Is this something other people are experiencing in conjunction with a hydra kernel? If not, do any of you guys know what could be causing this?

Flashing kernals is new to me although general rooting is not. Apparently with my new Inc I have the slcd which will only work with a few kernals. What I had to do to get some new ROMs working was flash the ROM, then flash a specific kernal before booting up. That worked and I was able to flash some ROMs that I was not previously able to use. It has come to my attention that there are some kernals out there that are better for battery life so my questions are:
1) If I want to flash a new kernal over my existing ROM can I just do that? Boot into recovery and flash the new kernal? (After a nandroid of course.) Or do I have to flash the ROM again, then flash the new kernal and then boot up? Do I need to wipe anything before flashing a new kernal?
2) What are the best kernals for battery life that work with the slcd screen?

I rooted my Droid incredible 2 days ago so bare with me as I am still trying to understand all this new terminology and get the fullest use out of my phone. I was wondering about Kernals, overclocking and underclocking. I would like to increase my battery life as we all know how crappy it can be under normal use. I am running Skyraider 3.3 now because I enjoy the stock look of the HTC sense and I am using ADW.launcher as well. I downloaded a kernal for Skyraider but I can't tell what the speeds are and change them up. I saw a program called setcpu for rooted users on the market. Anyone have any experience with this app and is it worth the money? I am not wanting to slow down the performance of my phone but I still want to be able to have a good battery life. Anyone have any suggestions for a kernal to use or anyone using setcpu have a suggestions for a good speed to use.

I ask for some clarification on ROMs, radios, bootloaders and kernals.I am currently running a rooted stock incredible. I want to try CM6, the 2.2 leak, and the 2.2 lite or Sky Raider. I know there are issues with having the right radio and kernal with all these. If I understand it right, the stock kernal will work with all of them. If I wan't to try another kernal I would be limited to kernals made to get along with those specific roms. Is this correct?I have the 1.x radio right now, which will work with CM6 right? If I go to the 2.2 leak it will upgrade it to 2.x, which will work with 2.2 lite or Sky Raider. However I am I right in thinking to go back to CM6 or stock from 2.2 leak I will have to downgrade the radio? Also, I will have to downgrade the bootloader as well?Whew, this is all so confusing.

last night I got tired of waiting for the 2.2 update so I installed unrevoked forever, 2.15 radio and the third wave rom from adrenyline. After all that went smoothly I decided to throw the standard clock undervolt hydra kernel in there too. After I did that I got sporadic reboots and the screen became very unresponsive. Also it seems to cause the phone to freeze whenever it has to wake up to play a notification sound or alarm...
Now I have to say that I had the same problem about a month ago when I tried one of the older Hydra Kernels, but I figured it would be fixed with the newer ones. My question is it seems that I am the only one with problems, all the posts I read about these things are positive with little or no issues. Am I installing it incorrectly somehow? Is anyone else having issues too?

We don't officially have 4G in Denver yet, but I've found two locations that I get a good 4G signal:
Near Elitch Gardens (LoDo)
I-36 near Sheridan
So the other day I was messing around with the 4g and accidentally turned off the "Mobile Network" option in Settings > Wireless & networks. When I was in the 4G area I didn't notice because everything worked fine. But when I left the area, I had NO DATA coverage.
Of course I thought that the Sprint network was down (3G) maybe due to upgrading and eventually called Sprint to see what the deal was. Of course eventually realized that the network wasn't down so it was my phone. Was going to be driving by a Sprint store anyway, so I stopped in. Rep noticed my stupid error right away and re-enabled the "Mobile Network" and data came back to life instantly.
But that got me thinking... Did I really have 4G working without the "Mobile Network" enabled? If so, that means that when I'm in a solid 4G area, I can disable "Mobile Network" and save some battery.
Was I imagining this? Or can you really turn off 3G to save battery while on 4G (or Wi-Fi)?
